This story about “RuPaul’s Drag Race: Untucked” first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Comedy issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
There’s a lot crammed into each 30-minute episode of “Untucked.” The companion show to “RuPaul’s Drag Race” captures the moments after the contestants learn whether they are safe from elimination or will lip sync for their life (and for the chance to stay another week in the drag queen competition). But “Untucked” also serves as a group therapy session, a place where they can “turn off” their drag and competitive personas and just be themselves, a rare respite in a competition where they must be constantly “on.”
“It is the moment where the queens are no longer their characters,” “Untucked” executive producer Kenneth Leslie said. “They’re with their sisters celebrating, crying, laughing. They’re going through every emotion as a human being, not as a character.

Each season on “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” there’s a big song and dance group number that showcases the queens performance abilities. Dubbed the “rusical” — an amalgamation of RuPaul and musical — it’s the chance for each of the competitors to show off their acting, dancing and lip-syncing skills.
For the competition series’ milestone Season 15, the rusical was “Wigloose,” inspired by the 1984 Kevin Bacon classic “Footloose.” The number starred the top six queens: Anetra, Loosey Laduca, Luxx Noir London, Mistress Isabelle Brooks, Salina EsTitties and Sasha Colby. “Wigloose” is set in the fictional small town of West Bumtuck, where a local teacher (Brooks) seeks to outlaw drag. The local youth protest the law by holding a secret drag ball. In the end, the teacher is reminded by her old friend (Anetra) and husband (Colby) about the power of drag, and the law is overturned.

It’s Emmy season so what better time than now for Television Academy voters to consider the 15th season of MTV’s reality competition series “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” On Saturday, June 10, Gold Derby spoke with the year’s big winner, Sasha Colby, on the red carpet at the network’s FYC event held at The Village at the Los Angeles LGBT Center. Watch our interview above.
“I’m really more powerful than ever,” Sasha proclaimed on the red carpet. “I think [Pride month] is the exact moment when the audience is most proud, [especially] with everything that’s going on in the world. It just means that they are really seeing how powerful love and queer love is, and it means we’re doing something right.”

While the LGBTQ community and its allies celebrate Pride this June, conservative legislators across the country continue to push through bills that strip rights from queer people. For longtime “RuPaul’s Drag Race” judge and producer Michelle Visage, the anti-lgbtq rhetoric and legislation are distractions while other rights that affect even wider populations — like abortion and education — are also being targeted.
TheWrap’s Elijah Gil caught up with Visage at The Village at the Los Angeles LGBT Center for a special live performance of “Wigloose: The Rusical” during L.A. Pride weekend. The performance, which featured Season 15 queens Sasha Colby, Luxx Noir London, Mistress Isabelle Brooks, Salina EsTitties, Marcia Marcia Marcia and Aura Mayari, was part of the official “RuPaul’s Drag Race” FYC Emmy Event. But it also served as a reminder of the contentious political and cultural climate in America today.

In early March, Tennessee became the first state to ban drag shows in public places.
The state’s Republican governor, Bill Lee, signed a bill that banned “adult cabaret entertainment” on public property or in locations where it can be viewed by minors, including “topless dancers, go-go dancers, exotic dancers, strippers, male or female impersonators, or similar entertainers.”
Critics of the law, which went into effect April 1, say that categorizing drag as “adult entertainment” automatically deems them sexualized performances. They also argue the language surrounding “male and female impersonators” is inherently anti-trans.
At least a dozen other states are considering similar anti-drag legislation. It was a topic of discussion at the recent taping of the “RuPaul’s Drag Race” finale.
For Season 15 contestant Aura Mayari, the anti-drag law hits close to home. “I am from Tennessee,” Mayari told TheWrap. “I always say, just keep your head up. There’s a whole community behind you.

Tea was spilled. Dirt was dished. And some queens got some long-awaited grievances off their chests.
The reunion gave us a 2-hour montage of unfiltered fun and edited segments on RuPaul's Drag Race Season 15 Episode 15.
Even if the competition comes first, the reunion always finds a way to give us the needed drama. This special is welcomed and a must-have for every year!
A good reunion needs a few key things: the queens being together in person, an openness to spill all the tea, and some drama in and out of the competition.
"Reunited" checked many of the boxes we'd come to expect; the reunion was a good time that mainly stayed upbeat. Though, for a 2-hour show, it felt like many of the queens were silent or were staying in their "Congenial Era."
Like why did a good number of queens not talk as much?

Each week on “Whatcha Packin’,” Michelle Visage interviews the recently eliminated queen and shows us some of the runway looks they didn’t get the chance to use on the show. Following her episode 13 elimination, Loosey Laduca goes over the structure of her performance style and admits to Michelle that she did butt heads with some of the other queens during filming. In her conversation with Michelle, Loosey explains where her drag name came from — Loosey was an homage to Lucille Ball and Laduca hints at her Italian heritage, but is also the name of a type of shoe worn in the musical theater scene. RuPaul’s Drag Race is all about inside and running jokes that carry over the course of a season. Sometimes, they even carry from one season to the next. On season 15, Mistress Isabelle Brooks admitted to stealing a RuPaul book from the set, thinking that it was only a prop. However, she apologized when she discovered that it was a producer’s personal copy. In true RuPaul fashion, he always has a comeback for everything.

RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 15 drag queen Loosey Laduca fought hard for the lead role in the “Wigloose” Rusical. It parodied the 1984 film Footloose, which longtime viewers praised. The film’s lead star Kevin Bacon was among the audiences watching RuPaul’s Drag Race, but his words held a whole lot of weight for Loosey and the rest of the cast.

RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 15 introduced its biggest cast in the herstory of the show. It’s always sad to see a queen’s future in the competition get the axe, but the judging doesn’t always gel with the fandom and the contestants. “RuPaul’s Drag Race” season 15 continued on March 17 with the next step in the competition toward discovering “America’s next drag superstar.” Last week, the queens stood on stage in pairs for a stand up comedy challenge. In keeping with the spirit of iconic duos, both Luxx Noir London and Loosey Laduca were named challenge winners and Marcia Marcia Marcia was asked to “sashay away” following an impressive Lip Sync for Your Life against Anetra.

The majority of RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 15 contained shorter episodes, going from 90 to 60 minutes, including commercials. However, that didn’t stop the drag reality television competition series from packing its runtime with both talent and drama. RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 15 first introduced the world to “metalgate,” but episode 12 is bringing “Heavengate” to the forefront.

“RuPaul’s Drag Race” season 15 continued on January 27 with the next step in the competition toward discovering “America’s next drag superstar.” Last week, twins Sugar and Spice fell into the bottom two together after chaotic and confusing turns in “Snatch Game.” After their well-rehearsed Lip Sync for Your Life to “You Better Run,” Spice was chosen as the sister to stay while Sugar was asked to “sashay away.” This week, the 13 remaining girls use home decor elements in their first design challenge of the season.
