A brilliant scientist, Quint ( Henry Ian Cusick) knows that his children have a genetic disease that will eventually claim their lives. Quint also knows that he can save his children, but to do so, he must freeze them in cryptobiosis, test organs from clones, research the immortal Turritopsis jellyfish, and avoid being terminated by Masterson (Kathleen Quinlan), his former boss and deadly dealer of dark science. It's a tough line to walk and a fascinating trajectory to follow in Chimera Strain, the first feature film from Maurice Haeems. With Chimera Strain out now from Vertical Entertainment, Daily Dead had the great pleasure of chatting with Ian about portraying Quint's slipping sanity, reuniting with Quinlan (with whom he had worked on his first North American film), and the parallels between Quint and Ian's beloved character Desmond from Lost.

Quint (Henry Ian Cusick) is desperate to save his children from the same disease that claimed their mother, but to save them, he'll have to freeze them, and that's only the beginning of his disturbing journey into the dark side of science, where messing with the wrong people could mean waking up with your organs missing.
Heart-wrenching drama and science that is both fascinating and cautionary collide for a potent sci-fi story in Chimera Strain, and with the film coming to theaters and VOD platforms on March 15th from Vertical Entertainment, we caught up with writer/director Maurice Haeems to discuss his decision to switch careers at the age of 47 to write and direct his first film, working with Cusick and Kathleen Quinlan on his debut feature, and the real-world science that inspired Chimera Strain.
Thanks for taking the time to catch up with us, and congratulations on Chimera Strain!

Chimera Strain is an upcoming high-concept/low-budget sci-fi film about a mad scientist trying to save his children by editing their DNA. It comes from first time writer-director Maurice Haeems. I love a mad scientist story, and with all the controversy and philosophical dilemmas posed by Crispr, this movie seems to be very timely. Let’s hope that it lives up to its potential.
Here is the synopsis: “A brilliant but disturbed scientist named Quint (Henry Ian Cusick) freezes his own two children alive, while he races to cure their deadly genetic disease by decoding the DNA of the immortal Turritopsis jellyfish.”
The film also stars Kathleen Quinlan, Erika Ervin, Jenna Harrison, Karishma Ahluwalia, and Jennifer Gjulameti. Chimera Strain has played at a few film festivals and will be released in select theaters and on VOD by Vertical Entertainment on March 15. Are you going to check it out?...

"Will they be human?" "They will be superhuman!" Vertical Entertainment has debuted the first full trailer for a high concept, low budget sci-fi thriller titled Chimera Strain, the directorial debut of newcomer Maurice Haeems. This premiered at a few smaller film festivals last year, and is arriving on VOD this March. Henry Ian Cusick stars as a "brilliant but disturbed scientist" who decides to freeze his kids, in order to develop the cure their deadly genetic disease by decoding the DNA of the immortal Turritopsis jellyfish. It explores our fascination with immortality and all-consuming obsession with understanding our genetics. Also starring Kathleen Quinlan, Erika Ervin, Jenna Harrison, Karishma Ahluwalia, and Jennifer Gjulameti. This looks pretty cool, he's playing with some big ideas - I just hope it lives up to its potential. Here's the official Us trailer (+ poster) for Maurice Haeems' Chimera Strain, direct from YouTube: A brilliant but...

While the short description of writer/director Maurice Haeems' feature film debut Chimera Strain didn't catch my attention, the fact that the movie stars "The 100" star Henry Ian Cusick did pique my interest.
Cusick stars as Quint, a brilliant - is there any other movie type? - scientist who has frozen his sick children while attempting to find a cure for their deadly genetic disease. Oh the drama!
It's a familiar plotline and one that has been explored in other projects to various degrees of success. While it remains to be seen where on the quality scale Chimera Strain will fall, I must admit that Cusick's involvement is, at this point, pretty much the only reason to see the movie. Hopefully the project will fall on the better side of the scale.

‘Medical horror’ is strange sub genre that could contain a wide range of movies. From The Fly to The Human Centipede trilogy to Frankenstein to Re-Animator. Each of those movies is very different but each of them also share some similarities with the latest movie in that list, Chimera.
Chimera follows one man, a father and scientist who wants to freeze his children alive in the hope that it will give him time to create a cure for the deadly disease they both have. Henry Ian Cusick plays the father, Quint, and he is a good actor to have you revolve your movie around. Known mainly for his TV work in Lost and The 100, Cusick puts in a strong, believable performance and he really does hold the film together.
