When New Yorker film critic Pauline Kael wrote a long and heated rave of Bernardo Bertolucci’s Last Tango in Paris after its premiere in 1972, she stated, among other things, that “this is a movie people will be arguing about for as long as there are movies.”
Kael may have been overdoing it when she stressed Last Tango‘s monumental importance, claiming it was a “movie breakthrough” and that it “altered the face of the art form.” But in terms of people arguing years later about the film’s legacy, she was spot-on.
Case in point: Being Maria, a new biopic of tormented French actress Maria Schneider, who at age 19 starred opposite Marlon Brando in the Bertolucci movie — a feat that launched her career as a promising new international actress while destroying her life at the same time.
The reasons for this are well known, and resurfaced over the past...

One of the best running gags in the history of sitcoms has to do with the wife of Niles Crane (David Hyde Pierce) on the NBC series "Frasier," and it was actually inspired by another, even greater sitcom. Throughout the series, audiences hear plenty about Niles' wife Maris, but she never actually appears onscreen. Other sitcoms have had similar gags, like the neighbor Wilson never showing the lower half of his face on "Home Improvement," but the "Frasier" writers drew inspiration directly from Frasier's parent show — "Cheers."
In an interview with The Washington Post all the way back in 1996, David Hyde Pierce revealed that there were actually originally plans to introduce Maris at some point, but they ended up going in a different direction. It's kind of a funny story of trying to stand apart, only to realize it didn't actually matter. Though if they try and pull the same...

If there's one thing that sums up the best comedy moments in "Frasier" it's that classic switch from the sublime to the ridiculous. Kelsey Grammer's stuffy psychiatrist was supposed to be endearingly pompous, and mostly remained lovable even at his most snooty. But sometimes, he and his brother Niles (David Hyde Pierce) were just straight up off-putting with their insufferably hifalutin tendencies.
Thankfully, these character traits were the precise thing that made for some of the best moments in the beloved sitcom, which ran for 11 seasons from 1993-2004 and which has recently returned in the form of a neither remarkable nor disappointing revival show. As "Frasier" writer, producer, and showrunner Christopher Lloyd said in Vanity Fair's oral history of the show:
"The vanity and self-importance always helped us lead Frasier into comic situations ... It's not funny to see a guy step into a manhole and get hurt. But if...

This article contains spoilers for the "Frasier" revival.
Paramount+'s "Frasier" revival is off to a start. Not a great one, not a particularly rocky one either, just ... a start. Here at /Film we've explored the good (the beautiful tribute to the series paid to the late John Mahoney), the bad (that painful "Dr. Crane" sequence from episode 3), and everything in between (who do You want to reprise their role in the revival?). In his review of the series, /Film's Josh Spiegel called it "neither disappointing nor remarkable," and presciently identified exactly where the revival has the opportunity to ultimately either bomb or soar: "The new characters," Spiegel wrote, "only serve as distant echoes of the ensemble from the original series."
Finely drawn characters and electric character dynamics are arguably the key to all successful sitcoms. But these elements were especially vital to the success of "Frasier" as, unlike most other smash hit sitcoms,...

Recipes are far more than measurements and ingredients; they transport us to other places and times, evoking forgotten memories through the taste, texture, smell, sound and visual presentation of food. Key to our social history, recipe books passed down through the generations are a historical blueprint connecting us to our ancestors and food traditions. We remember the comfort of our mother’s arms with a taste of matzo ball soup or recall a joyous celebration with a bite of walnut cake.
It is this human and historical connection — forged by recipes — that has brought together Israeli American chef Alon Shaya (New Orleans’ Saba and Miss River, Denver’s Safta), 92-year-old Holocaust survivor Steven Fenves and Phil Rosenthal, from Netflix’s Somebody Feed Phil, to host the Rescued Recipes dinner in Los Angeles on Saturday, Oct. 21.

The creators of the “Frasier” revival didn’t just have to rewrite the opening jingle about tossed salads and scrambled eggs: They had to toss out the original premise.
“Frasier” on Paramount+ was originally supposed to follow the titular psychiatrist Dr. Frasier Crane (Kelsey Grammer) and his brother, fellow therapist Niles (David Hyde Pierce), opening a theater together. However, after Pierce opted to not reprise his role for the revival, the series’ premise pivoted.
“For a long time, the idea was that Frasier and Niles were going to run a black-box theater, like how they bought that restaurant and brought it back to life,” series co-writer Joe Cristalli told Vulture. “But it’s hard for Frasier and Niles to run the theater when you don’t have Niles, so we had to step back from that.”
Co-creator Chris Harris added, “It would be weird to make Niles the new Maris,...

With 264 episodes, not a single one of which doesn’t have something to recommend it, picking out the best of NBC’s Frasier (1993 – 2004) is a ridiculous thing to attempt. For a start, you’d need to include all of the dinner party episodes, obviously, plus every story in which Niles and Frasier ruinously compete with one another.
Such a list also couldn’t leave out any occasion on which John Mahoney as Marty Crane swerves mid-comedy to punch you in the gut with feelings, or any of Kelsey Grammer’s brilliantly controlled clowning.
You’d need to represent every perfectly timed trick from Eddie the dog, and have a fair smattering of Maris gags, Roz’s smart mouth and Daphne’s stories of an English childhood just to cover the basics. You’d be into the high 90s before you’d even got going.
To winnow it down to just the 50 best episodes of Frasier?...

It’s Frasier Week at IndieWire. Grab some tossed salad and scrambled eggs, settle into your coziest easy chair, and join us. We’re listening.
“Quite stylish!” That lusty endorsement of high thread-count finery in the “Frasier” theme song sets the tone for the show. There have been few sitcoms ever to embrace the luxe life with quite such relish as the 11-season adventures of Frasier and Niles Crane (read our picks for the 18 best episodes here).
IndieWire decided to celebrate the return of the one-time radio psychiatrist, with his new show on Paramount+, by diving into his must haves and must avoids. Various fan blogs and Reddit threads have explored certain aspects of the Crane lifestyle, but none have really put them all in one place before. So we present: The Frasier Lifestyle Guide — what to drink, drive, and wear that’s worthy of the Crane brothers.

Hey baby, do you hear the blues a-calling? We do! It’s been 30 years, but we still can’t get enough of “Frasier.” Luckily for us, there’s more “Frasier” on the horizon! Not many could have predicted that a “Cheers” spinoff about a lovably pompous psychiatrist unable to take his own advice would have been such a success, but it works, and more than that, it’s magic.
Part of the sitcom’s charm is that Frasier, as played by Kelsey Grammer, is routinely fallible. He’s pretentious, nitpicky, and status-obsessed, so we love to see him fall on his face. What’s unique about Frasier is that it’s never because of the fact he’s smart that he gets tripped up. It’s his pretention,...

With just a few episodes left, we’re nearing the end of Love is Blind Season 5.
As with past seasons, Love is Blind Season 5 sees contestants getting to know each other through conversation only in “pods”. If sparks fly in the pods, couples can propose marriage and then have the chance to lay eyes on each other. This kicks off a few weeks of living together before the couple can decide to break it off or tie the knot.

Apple TV’s new thriller miniseries The Last Thing He Told Me released its latest episode this week, and it’s everything that we wanted from a thriller with star power like Jennifer Garner and Nikolaj Coster Waldau. The episode finally clears up a lot of the confusion regarding the whole situation and helps give us a picture of what is happening. In the previous week, Hannah and Bailey had arrived at the library of the University of Texas, where they found a yearbook that had a picture of a woman named Katherine Smith, who looked strikingly like Bailey. What do Hannah and Bailey find out about this woman? Here’s the detailed recap of Episode 5.

What would “Frasier” be without Roz?
Sure, the satirically snobby Seattle-based “Cheers” spin-off was centered on radio psychologist Frasier Crane (Kelsey Grammer) and his fraught relationships with his brother Niles (David Hyde Pierce) and father Martin (John Mahoney) while self-sabotaging his hopeless romantic pursuits. Yet the crux of the series, its most necessary foil, came from Frasier’s radio producer Roz Doyle (Peri Gilpin) who did not hesitate to mock Frasier’s out-of-touch privilege and many misfires.
The announcement that Peri Gilpin is reprising her role as Roz for one episode in the “Frasier” Paramount+ revival ignites a surge of hope for a spinoff that’s otherwise without most of the original core cast.
The best parts of “Frasier” are its women, and that needs to be recognized in the present day, especially since it actually was at the time of its first airing. While current shows like “The Idol...
