This post contains spoilers for "The Mandalorian" and "The Bad Batch."
In one of the more introspective chapters of "The Mandalorian," the titular Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) has to traverse uncomfortable territory in season 2, episode 7 "The Believer" (directed by Rick Famuyiwa). To infiltrate an Imperial refinery on the Imperial-occupied planet of Morak, the Mandalorian has to bend his Mandalorian Creed to don the Imperial armor and then play the role of a loyal Imperial underling in order to snag intel that could save the life of Grogu, his foundling. He and his accomplice Migs Mayfield (Bill Burr), a former stormtrooper, hijack a transport, and Din ends up getting into some fisticuffs with some humanoid Shydopps pirates atop the transports. Along the way, Mayfield also barrages Din with some philosophical and existential questions about the moral grays of the galaxy: the desperate lengths the otherwise pious Din would go to circumvent...

Star Wars: The Bad Batch Episode 12
Look at that: it’s a two-parter after all. The Bad Batch take a bit more of a front role in their own show as they reluctantly help out in “Rescue on Ryloth,” directed by Nathaniel Villanueva and written by Jennifer Corbett. The show still feels too entwined with everything else in Star Wars to have mass appeal, but this episode in particular learned more from Rebels than from The Clone Wars in terms of giving characters the time to talk to one another and allowing beats to sink in between all the action.
I almost hoped last week’s episode was a one-off, just one story in an anthology, but am at the same time happy to see these characters back. It helps that everyone in this arc is just so charming. Twi’lek...

Star Wars: The Bad Batch Episode 6
As a story about what purpose-built soldiers do after the war, The Bad Batch has been as aimless as its protagonists so far. But an entertaining episode that finds them still deep in the underworld, “Decommissioned,” written by Amanda Rose Muñoz and directed by Nathaniel Villanueva, brings back some minor The Clone Wars characters and deepens the Batch’s scant characterization. It also goes into the fate of the battle droids from the other side, showing how the Empire erases the evidence of the prior war by melting it down to scrap.
The Trandoshan operator Cid has a new job for the Batch: go to a factory on Corellia and retrieve a Separatist tactical droid destined for the furnace. It’s not going to be easy, since there are a lot of police droids on the scene.

When Star Wars: The Bad Batch premiered last week, I had complaints that the fast-moving episode skimped questions about Crosshair’s state of mind under the influence of his clone brain chip. But the latest “Replacements” (directed by Nathaniel Villanueva and written by Matt Michnovetz) scratches dents into the issue and promises deeper explorations in the […]

The former Skywalker apprentice and the former acolyte of the Sith are finally face-to-face in Star Wars: The Clone Wars as part two of the Siege of Mandalore finale arc rages on. Directed by Nathaniel Villanueva, “The Phantom Apprentice” proceeds as a tragedy where the offstage—offscreen—action of Revenge of the Sith permeates the tensions, namely the prospective […]

The latest Star Wars: The Clone Wars reunites former Jedi Ahsoka Tano (Ashley Eckstein) with her Jedi obligations. “You can change who you are, but you cannot run from yourself,” says the opening epigraph of “Together Again,” directed by Nathaniel Villanueva. So concludes one of The Clone Wars’s most compelling arcs, penned by Charles Murray […]
