ABC is making some big decisions about the future of some of its pilots.
The network has passed on the Revenge reboot, Thirtysomething sequel, The Brides, and Valley Trash.
Ahead of the Covid-19 pandemic forcing production to halt on all scripted series in the U.S., the Thirtysomething(else) was considered a shoo-in on the network's 2020-21 schedule.
The potential series first entered development earlier this year, with ABC later ordering a pilot presentation.
Here's the official logline:
Apparently, raising children -- even grown children -- never ends, but who could have known how hard it would be for them to raise their parents?
Reboot of the 1987-91 series 'Thirtysomething,' with emphasis on the original cast's children -- the new generation of thirtysomethings.
Returning original cast members include Ken Olin (Michael Steadman), Mel Harris (Hope Murdoch), Timothy Busfield (Elliot Weston), and Patty Wettig (Nancy Weston).

Exclusive: Marshall Herskovitz and Ed Zwick’s beloved 1987 drama series thirtysomething is making a comeback. I have learned that the duo is pitching a new incarnation of the show, which is garnering interest from multiple networks, including ABC, which aired the original series.
Written by thirtysomething creators Herskovitz and Zwick and to be directed by Zwick, I hear the followup series revolves around the children of the characters in the original show, which are now 30-something themselves. I hear the intention is for original cast members to reprise their roles but no one is set yet and there have been no formal talks.
The project hails from MGM TV, the studio behind the original series, which ran on ABC for four seasons.
Thirtysomething was a seminal series that captured the angst of the baby boomer generation and its struggles with real-life issues such as career, relationships, marriage, having kids and parenting.

This is Us executive producer and director Ken Olin is expanding his relationship with 20th Century Fox TV, signing an overall deal with the studio behind NBC’s flagship drama series. Under the pact, Olin will continue as Ep and director on This Is Us, which received a three-season renewal last month. The deal, his first overall with the studio, also allows him to develop new projects for all platforms.
“Ken is a special talent and a terrific guy who has been such a valuable resource to Dan [Fogelman] and everyone at This is Us. Keeping him at this studio and on that important show was literally a mission for Howard [Kurtzman] and me, and we’re equally excited to work on other projects with him. He’s hungry and excited to do more which is music to our ears.”
Added Olin: “I feel incredibly fortunate to continue working with Dan Fogelman...
