Nightstream, which launched in 2020 as a virtual film festival looking to provide options for filmmakers and viewers during the pandemic, is returning as a transactional VOD platform focused on genre films.
The relaunch is being steered by the Brooklyn Horror Film Festival, in association with the Boston Underground Film Festival and the Overlook Film Festival.
The first Nightstream exclusive title is Summoners, from Terence Krey and Christine Nyland, the duo behind 2020’s An Unquiet Grave. Summoners, whose cast features long-established indie film figure Larry Fessenden, world premiered at last year’s Brooklyn horror fest. Per its official logline, the film centers on “a former witch who is plunged back into a world of witchcraft far more dangerous than ever before, after her childhood friend seeks her help in performing a dark spell.”

Anybody who watches documentaries on the subject, or survival films, knows that going hiking alone is a bad idea. The heroine of this film, Caroline (co-writer/co-director Christine Nyland), knows it herself. So why does she do it? That’s a mystery which this film consciously explores, beginning after she has already found herself lying at the bottom of a ridge, her shoulder dislocated.
Caroline is a practical person. She gets her shoulder back into place and rigs up a sling to avoid putting additional strain on it. She uses both her radio and her mobile phone in an attempt to reach help. Knowing that she’ll need water, she keeps moving and successfully locates a stream. When, walking along it, she cuts her foot, she realises that the smashed-off end of a bottle which has injured her could be useful for focusing the sun’s rays and starting a fire.

Distress Signals: "When a fall down a steep rock face separates her from her friends, Caroline finds herself stranded. Now, alone and with a dislocated shoulder, she must make her way out of the woods--and contend with how she got there."
Directors’ Statement: "In 2020, as the world ground to a halt, we – like everyone else – found ourselves canceling our plans. In our case, that meant shelving the film we’d intended to make that summer, even though we were more restless than ever.
Desperate for something to hang on to as the world turned upside down, we briefly considered making a screen movie, but far too much of our lives had already transitioned to zoom, so our conversations turned toward isolation and depression – and the antidotes we craved. We wanted to do something together. We wanted to escape the walls we’d been surrounded by for months. We wanted horizon lines.

There’s an old saying that you can’t go home again and for the most part it’s true. People are older or not around anymore, personalities have slightly changed and the furniture is different. Then there’s all the personal experiences that have changed you while away. Indeed, home is just a memory, but when you’re called back there, it’s for a reason and you better be ready for it. The filmmaking duo of writer/director Terence Krey and writer/actor Christine Nyland explore this premise with their compelling occult film Summoners.
College student Jess (Nyland) has just returned to her family home where her father (Larry Fessenden) lives alone after her mother died. She’s not sure why she’s there, but she knows there’s something she has to do. A chance encounter with her old friend Alana (McLean Peterson) rekindles their teenage bond,...

Screened at 2022’s Brooklyn Horror Film Festival, Summoners is one of the simplest and yet most impressively crafted of this year’s tumult of witch-themed films. It’s a simple story about a young woman visiting her home town and getting caught up in her high school best friend’s problems, but it’s beautifully acted and its gentle pacing allows for the construction of a richly detailed world.
That young woman is Jess, played by co-writer Christine Nyland, whom viewers may remember from her brief but expressive performance in 2019’s The Garden Left Behind. She arrives one day out of the blue, surprising her father (the ever-reliable Larry Fessenden) and is delighted to bump into Alana (McLean Peterson) for the first time in around a decade. When they were young they used to engage in a bit of light witchcraft together, and there’s a hint that they may have got results,...

Terence Krey's "Summoners" is an indie slice of "Practical Magic" pie, telling a heartfelt story about timeless friendship through spellcasting. It's a lighter horror tale that isn't beholden to stereotypical scares, showing the more compassionate side of genre filmmaking. Krey sticks closer to titles like "Hellbender" when executing what wicked curses this way come, without feeling like witchcraft fans are left in the cold. "Summoners" focuses on storytelling and character arcs above all, which accentuates what impractical magic might take place as characters learn there's no cure for life's most unpredictable swings.
Co-writer Christine Nyland stars as Jess Whitman, a Massachusetts resident who returns home after her mother's death. Jess seems apprehensive when father Doug (Larry Fessenden) suggests visiting his wife's grave, always avoiding the conversation. Instead, Jess reconnects with former bestie Alana Wheeler (McLean Peterson) as they relive their local glory days — which eventually brings up their "casting" abilities.

Debuting at this year’s Popcorn Frights, Distress Signals is the writing and directing team of Terence Krey and Christine Nyland’s follow-up to the unsettling slow-burn horror film An Unquiet Grave. This time around they’ve chosen a more realistic, but no less unnerving, topic to explore, wilderness survival.
While out camping with friends Caroline (Christine Nyland) goes off for a hike by herself and takes a fall off an embankment dislocating her shoulder. Ably to briefly talk to her friend Lauren (Stephanie Hains) before she loses signal, Caroline is assured the guys are out looking for her. But when nobody shows up she’s forced to try to find her own way out of the woods.

"There isn't any right or wrong, there's just what happens." Rlje Films has debuted an official trailer for the indie horror drama An Unquiet Grave, which is arriving on VOD starting in January after a streaming run on Shudder earlier this year. The film originally premiered at the 2020 Nightstream Film Festival last year, and was one of the most buzzed about films showing there. A year after losing his wife in a car crash, Jamie convinces her sister to return with him to the site of the accident and perform a strange ritual. But as the night wears on, it becomes clear that he has darker intentions. "An Unquiet Grave is an exploration of grief, and the harm we cause when we don't take responsibility for our own healing." Starring Jacob A. Ware & Christine Nyland. This looks like Pet Sematary lite but about reviving a wife not a few dead pets.

Terence Krey’s An Unquiet Grave is a tight, contained horror story built on this simple question: what if you could return a lost loved one to life? It is a question often asked in horror, but it is rarely answered quite like this.
One year ago, Jamie (Jacob A. Ware) suffered a tragic loss when his wife, Jules, was killed in a car wreck. Unable to move on, he talks to her twin sister, Ava (co-writer Christine Nyland), into returning to the place of Jules’ death and performing a ritual to try to return her from the dead.
This film is fascinating in the way it breaks down certain aspects of the grief process. People may grieve differently, but no matter how you face the impossible task of trying to say goodbye,
eventually we must be willing to move along. It might be difficult and it might hurt, but...

When is the right time to stop mourning your love? A month? A year? Longer? When do the tears become less of a memorial for the dead and more a tomb constructed around the living? The folksong states “one year and a day.” That’s when an unnamed man hears from his late lover that his crying has prevented her from rest. He says he’ll stop if only he had but one more kiss, yet she knows it to be false. Such an intimate moment would only fill his heart further and make it so he’ll never leave. That “clay cold kiss” would be his undoing and the warmth of their union would be lost for good. He must live to protect it. He must live for them both.

For a group of friends in the web series Graves, the only thing more horrifying than turning thirty in their hometown is the resurgence of literal demons from their past. A potently funny and heartfelt blend of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Todd & The Book of Pure Evil, and its own original spin on the horror and drama genres, Graves just finished up a stellar second season, and we had the pleasure of catching up with the web series' creator, Terence Krey, for our latest Q&A to discuss the first two seasons of his show and his plans for a third and final season.
Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Terence, and congratulations on a really fun first two seasons of Graves. When did you first come up with the idea for this web series?

On Netflix, Stranger Things has earned acclaim for lovingly paying tribute to 80s horror. At the same time, there are independent creators brewing their own blends of old-school terror. One of those creators is Terrence Krey, whose series Graves is an homage to the supernatural TV shows of the 90s.
The first season of Graves centers around Jane Stevenson (Christine Nyland), who at the show’s onset must deal with all of the men in her life: There’s her boyfriend, an old crush, and Astaroth, a demon who is out for blood. In her own detached and darkly comedic way, Jane navigates both the natural conflicts to which viewers can relate and the supernatural ones that occur only in the world of fiction.
