Welcome to the latest instalment of a brand-new feature here on Nerdly, where one of our comic gurus, Ian Wells, delves into comics history and dissects Comics Interview, the long-running journal of interviews and criticism from David Anthony Kraft.
A Yak with Dak
Dak uses the Upfront space to plug alternative/independent comics, whilst also going out of his way to say Comics Interview strives to include them. Personally, I feel he is selling himself short in that regard. In the eight issues I have looked at so far, I feel the alternatives/indies have had decent representation. Look at #6 you had Berke Breathed talking Bloom County right alongside huge fanboy porn in the shape of Jla vs The Avengers! Comico was featured last time out, and the comics of First have been featured. It would be interesting to see how the early days of those two, their success and...

Take a look at new footage supporting the final season of the live-action DC Comics adaptation Black Lightning", premiering February 8, 2021 on The CW:
'Jefferson Pierce', aka 'Black Lightning' debuted in DC Comics' "Black Lightning" #1 (April 1977), created by writer Tony Isabella and illustrator Trevor Von Eeden, as a 'metahuman' born with the ability to generate and magnify externally-localized electro-magnetic phenomena by manipulating intense bio-electric fields generated from his body.
Pierce can easily stun or kill a man with his internal powers and on one occasion, was able to restart the heart of 'Superman', after the 'Man of Steel' had suffered a near-fatal 'Kryptonite' exposure.
Pierce can also generate a powerful electro-magnetic force field capable of stopping projectiles.
He has also has the ability to create an electro-magnetic repulsion field enabling limited-flight capabilities.
Pierce also maintains his Olympic-level physical conditioning, giving him above-average strength, speed, and stamina and under the tutelage of 'Batman',...

Exclusive: Grace Choi is officially here to stay on The CW’s Black Lightning. Chantal Thuy, who plays the shapeshifting metahuman on the Arrowverse superhero drama, has been upped to series regular for season four.
Grace Choi is based on the Black Lightning comic created by Tony Isabella with Trevor von Eeden. Thuy first appeared as a recurring character in the first season and she developed a relationship with Anissa (Nafessa Williams) who is also known as the metahuman Thunder and/or Blackbird. The Grace and Anissa broke ground as an on-screen queer superhero couple of color — and they were about to get married before the War for Freeland interrupted things.
“Chantal Thuy embodies the character of Grace Choi,” said Black Lightning executive producer and showrunner Salim Akil. “I am sure our Black Lightning fans knew, especially those who follow the Grace and Anissa relationship storyline, that having Chantal join...

The CW has moved up the return of “Black Lightning” by two weeks. Now starting on Monday, Oct. 7 at 9/8c, the “Black Lightning” Season 3 premiere will immediately follow the “All American” Season 2 premiere, which the network feels is a better pairing.
The move takes away one of two planned encores for the “Batwoman” series premiere and eliminates an encore of the “Nancy Drew” series premiere. Now that The CW has its own in-season streaming rights, those encores are seen as less vital for catch-up viewing.
Below is The CW’s revised fall premiere dates schedule, as revealed at the broadcast channel’s Television Critics Association (TCA) press tour day.

Moving Target: The History and Evolution of Green Arrow by Richard Gray. Sequart, $17.99 paperback; $6.99 Kindle edition
Way back when, Green Arrow was sort of the “always a bridesmaid, never a bride” of the superhero set. For a long time, fans could enjoy a new Green Arrow adventure just about every month, but he didn’t enjoy the headliner popularity of his hero pals like Batman or even Wonder Woman.
That’s all almost forgotten now. Today, so many fans enjoy this modern-day Robin Hood in comics, on TV and with licensed merchandise.
For some, Green Arrow became “a thing” when he debuted on TV, first as one of Superboy’s pals in Smallville and then in his own series. (He was briefly on Saturday morning cartoons before that too.)

This is the final part of my conversation with comics writer Robert Loren Fleming on the tragic backstory and forgotten history of DC’s Thriller comic book series. As I explained last week, this is actually an addendum to my recent article on this 80s cult favorite in TwoMorrow’s Back Issue Magazine.
Thriller was poised to be the next big thing from DC, but it seemed like many forces conspired against it. Despite it all, Thriller achieved a certain status. How did so many things go off the rails? The behind the scenes stories are as fascinating as the story between the covers.
Hazing, Publishing Style
There were some difficult things going on backstage at DC in those days. One of the uglier things was the hazing. It included everything from ripping up freelancers checks to harassing a female worker to the point where she was ready to clobber...

In the 80s, DC comics woke up the comics industry with Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns and The Watchmen by Alan Moore & Dave Gibbons. Fans and retailers were anxiously awaiting the next big thing. Thriller, the comic that you couldn’t read fast enough, was supposed to be that next big thing. Management was excited about this fresh title. The DC marketing department got behind it and sent the writer on the road with a presentation. Distributors got behind the first issues. Comic shop retailers aggressively ordered the first issue.
And then…it wilted. Thriller wasn’t the next big thing. It doesn’t mean there weren’t a lot of great things about the series. There certainly were. In the recent issue of Back Issue magazine, I looked at Thriller and the tumultuous backstory. As a fan, I always liked the early issues of the series, and now,...

With so many super heroes invading The CW, it's going to be tough for a new one to come in and stand out from the rest. That is exactly what Black Lightning is going to try and accomplish this when it premieres in 2018. For now the idea is that it will stand alone apart from the rest of the super hero shows (Arrow, The Flash, Legends Of Tomorrow and Supergirl). I personally think that it is only a matter of time before he is included with the other heroes. But this piece isn't focusing on any alliances he could make rather his opponents. Thanks to the trailer and synopsis we know that he will be dealing with a gang that called "The 100".
With that gang playing a key role in the series, it was only a matter of time before their leader was announced as the main antagonist. The International...

Lifted from the pages of Tony Isabella and Trevor Von Eeden’s comic book series, Black Lightning tells the story of Jefferson Pierce (Cress Williams), a once-iconic costumed crusader who decided to retire from the superhero scene soon after becoming a father. China Anne McClain and Nafessa Williams will play Jefferson’s two daughters, Jennifer and Anissa, while we understand Christine Adams is attached to the part of his estranged wife, Lynn.
Per Deadline, here’s the official logline for Black Lightning: “He made his choice: He hung up the suit and his secret identity years ago, but with a daughter, Jennifer, hellbent on justice and a star student being recruited by a local gang, he’ll be pulled back...

Super Producer and writer Greg Berlanti is adding a fifth superhero TV series to the CW next season. The network which already has Arrow, The Flash, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, and Supergirl has ordered a new series based on another DC property, Black Lightning. Entertainment Weekly describes the show:
"Jefferson Pierce made his choice: he hung up the suit and his secret identity years ago, but with one daughter hell-bent on justice and the other a star student being recruited by a local gang, he’ll be pulled back into the fight as the wanted vigilante and DC legend Black Lightning.”
Black Lightning is one of DC's first major African-American superheroes, he was created by Tony Isabella with Trevor Von Eeden in 1977.
One thing is for certain, despite DC's recent trend in more than disappointing features, you have to say their television game has been pretty strong. It really...

For some time now, Black Lightning has seemed destined to be picked up by The CW. The series was first announced as in development last September, and back then, they were looking to get the show over to Fox. Of course, times have changed. Fox passed on the show, and Berlanti and co. have since moved on to familiar pastures over on the CW.
Thus far, Greg Berlanti has a DC superhero show for nearly everyday of the week: Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, and Legends of Tomorrow. Those who have been annoyed that they haven’t yet locked down that Friday slot can now rejoice. According to Deadline, The CW has officially picked up Black Lightning for a full series.

While DC Comics properties are struggling on the big screen, there is no doubt that they have found their groove on the small screen. Since the debut of Arrow in 2012, he as been joined by The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow and Supergirl and have been successful enough to be picked up for yet another season. Thanks to these shows we have been able to see a a huge variety of characters that would have never made it to the big screen. Now they will be joined by yet another hero, Black Lightning.

With production on The CW’s Black Lightning now underway in Atlanta, the network has released the first photo of Cress Williams in the lead role.
For those unfamiliar with the character, his real name is Jefferson Pierce and he was one of “DC’s first high profile African-American superheroes – who arrived on the pages of DC comic books in 1977, created by Tony Isabella and Trevor Von Eeden.” An Olympic athlete, Pierce returns home only to find his neighbourhood terrorized by a gang called The 100. Greg Berlanti's latest superhero project at The CW is Black Lightning. It's the mega-producer's fifth DC series at the network, following Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl and Legends Of Tomorrow.

The show will follow Jefferson Pierce, aka Black Lightning, a former superhero - with electical abilities - who is drawn out of retirement when a younger generation is put in danger. Cress Williams is in that role.
The showrunners are Salim Akil and Mara Brock Akil, the former of whom has now been chatting about the villainous presence in the series. He's against the idea of 'freak of the week' villains and shoehorned battles, by the sounds of it.
"It’s a character-driven show. I don’t know if there’s going to be a fight every week," Akil said told International Business Times, teasing at a significant departure from The CW's superhero series formula.
Instead, more time will be spent nurturing the main villain: a chap named Tobias. Cbr reckons this could be a live action version of Tobias Whale from the comics (pictured), a member of the criminal cartel The 100 (who have already been confirmed for the show).
"There’s certainly not going to be a villain of the week", Akil added. "I don’t want to do that. We really want to explore the characters, even the villains. I think one of the most interesting characters right now from a storytelling standpoint is Tobias. Because we’re not having him sort of twist his mustache. His hatred for himself and for others comes from a real place, so we want to know why he’s like that."
We'll keep you updated as we hear more.
Black Lightning release date
The first season of Black Lightning is set to debut in the midseason break of the other DC shows' next runs. We'd expect a January 2018 release date, then, or something along those lines. We'll let you know when an exact date is confirmed.
More as we hear it. We've also got a trailer, poster and synopsis on page 2 of this article...

Black Lightning story
The series, which will apparently be set in a different universe to all the other DC shows, also has this brand new synopsis...
Jefferson Pierce (Cress Williams) is a man wrestling with a secret. As the father of two daughters and principal of a charter high school that also serves as a safe haven for young people in a New Orleans neighborhood overrun by gang violence, he is a hero to his community.
Nine years ago, Pierce was a hero of a different sort. Gifted with the superhuman power to harness and control electricity, he used those powers to keep his hometown streets safe as the masked vigilante Black Lightning.
However, after too many nights with his life on the line, and seeing the effects of the damage and loss that his alter ego was inflicting on his family, he left his Super Hero days behind and settled into being a principal and a dad. Choosing to help his city without using his superpowers, he watched his daughters Anissa (Nafessa Williams) and Jennifer (China Anne McClain) grow into strong young women, even though his marriage to their mother, Lynn (Christine Adams), suffered.
Almost a decade later, Pierce’s crime-fighting days are long behind him…or so he thought. But with crime and corruption spreading like wildfire, and those he cares about in the crosshairs of the menacing local gang The One Hundred, Black Lightning returns — to save not only his family, but also the soul of his community.
Based on the characters from DC, Black Lightning is from Berlanti Productions and Akil Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television, with executive producers Greg Berlanti (“Arrow,” “The Flash”), Salim Akil & Mara Brock Akil (“Being Mary Jane,” “The Game,” “Girlfriends”), and Sarah Schechter (“Arrow,” “The Flash”). The Black Lightning character was created by Tony Isabella with Trevor Von Eeden.

Black Lightning: Static joining the show?
Co-showrunner Salim Akil keen on bringing in Static, who is established in the comics as a teen fan of Black Lightning who gains similar powers.
"I love the idea of Static Shock, and in success, hopefully, we’ll be able to pull other characters in that way," Akil told Cbr recently. "So I’m holding out hope because I love that character."
Static previously appeared in 50+ episodes of the Static Shock animated series, which ended its run in 2004. Jaden Smith is regularly linked to a live-action take on the role.
To this writer, adding Static to Black Lightning's show sounds like a surefire way to garner hype for a second season, should one be ordered, after the mythos and the main players are introduced in season 1.

The CW has found tremendous success with their superhero series as of late, forming what fans refer to as the Arrowverse. It consists of Supergirl, The Flash, Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow. Now, we’re learning that it’s about to get a little bigger as it makes room for Black Lightning.
Originally set to find a home at Fox, the network ultimately passed on it as their comic book TV show slate is too crowded at the moment. They’ve got both Lucifer and Gotham currently on the air and also have Matt Nix’s X-Men family drama coming down the pipeline. Now, Black Lightning is on the move and the Greg Berlanti-produced series is expected to land on The CW, which makes perfect sense and is great news for fans of what the network’s been putting together over the last few years.

In recent years, Greg Berlanti has become a huge name in television thanks to his adaptation of comic book characters and his ability to both please the casual viewer and to satisfy the hardcore comic fan. The man has given us Arrow, Flash, Legends Of Tomorrow, and Supergirl to appease our comic addictions, and recently Fox signed him on to helm Black Lightning.
After watching the CBS Supergirl and Flash network crossover, we had high hopes of Black Lightning electrifying Barry Allen's (The Flash) world, and perhaps there was a way to tie in the Speedforce (the cosmic force that gives The Flash his powers) to Black Lightning's own skill-set.
When Berlanti was recently asked about a crossover and he gave a disappointing reply (via Cbr).
"I don’t think so, if we’re lucky enough that that exists, that that show exists, I don’t think those worlds will cross over.

According to reports, Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil will script a Warner Bros TV series based on DC Comics character "Black Lightning", to be executive produced by openly gay TV producer Greg Berlanti, who has promised more Lgbt themes for all of his DC Comics live-action TV adaptations including "Arrow", "The Flash", "Legends Of Tomorrow" and "Supergirl":

He can easily stun or kill a man with his internal powers, and on one occasion, able to restart the heart of 'Superman', after the 'Man of Steel' had suffered from a near-fatal 'Kryptonite' exposure.
