Before the existence of All Elite Wrestling, another wrestling company came along and revolutionized the business: Lucha Underground. For four seasons, the professional wrestling promotion featured premiere athletes fighting in the underground temple by using action, characters, and cinematic presentation. Before cinematic matches existed in WWE, Aew, or Impact Wrestling, they were born in Lucha Underground. Plenty of big names came and went throughout the 127 episodes. Former WWE Champion Rey Mysterio, former WWE United States Champion Ricochet, former Aew World Tag Team Champion Pentagon Dark, Jake Strong (Aew’s Jake Hager), Brian Cage, Johnny Mundo, Fenix, Killshot (Shane Strickland), and

Welcome to this edition of The Last Week In Wrestling, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and we have some great matches to cover, so let’s do so.
WWE Match Ratings Out Of 5: Raw: Sasha Banks, Bayley & Natalya versus The Riott Squad – 3.5 Apollo Crews versus Jinder Mahal – 2 Aop versus Seth Rollins (Handicap Match For The Raw World Tag Team Championship) – 2.5 Elias versus Dolph Ziggler – 2 Nia Jax versus Ember Moon – 2.5 Bobby Lashley versus Finn Bálor – 2.5 Drew McIntyre versus Kurt Angle – 2.5
Final Raw Verdict: 2.5 out of 5 – On a night when Kurt Angle looked better than the guy put over, Raw proved that even when it does things right, it will likely get the rest wrong. Seth Rollins losing the titles in a Handicap Match was a bad idea that Rollins made work, but it just sets him up for another dull feud with Dean Ambrose. Having Nia and...

Welcome to this week’s Lucha Underground review, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and we have the second half of Ultima Lucha Cuatro, so don’t you Lucha-go any-where! Wait… that sounded… aw, $#!&. Well, at least the matches are good. By the way, I’m not Peter Pan.
Match #1: Fenix defeated El Dragon Azteca Jr. – Two Out Of Three Falls Match
My Take: 4 out of 5 – Well, this was $#@!*&$ cool. This whole thing was classic lucha libre that felt like it was right out of Cmll/Emll. It was Emll originally, right? Any-way, this was fast and furious… but not like number eight… this was much better than eight. These guys were all over the place from the start, going for every big move they could stuff into this bad boy. These guys worked this whole match like it was Pay Per View, which is fitting since...

Welcome to this week’s Lucha Underground review, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and we have one match that rules the card. Will that match be enough to give this show a good review?
Match #1: (Main Event) – Jake Strong vs. Dante Fox vs. Hernandez vs. Aerostar vs. Big Bad Steve vs. Pj Black vs. King Cuerno – Gift Of The Gods Title Match My Take: 3.5 out of 5
This was good stuff. The bout is a long one, which is the right way to go, since it’s the only one booked on the card. Strong dominated the match, even though every-body got their moment to shine, even if they were only in it for a moment or so. Hernandez is lucky to have gotten this recent jolt of life to his career and with being able to finally work in Impact Wrestling and Lucha Underground, he might...

Welcome to this week’s Lucha Underground review, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and we have the Gift of the Gods battle royale, as well as a big main event, so let’s get to it, before I croak.
Match #1: Jake Strong beat Big Bad Steve, Aerostar, Pj Black, Hernandez, Dante Fox and King Cuerno – Battle Royale Match For #1 Contendership To The Gift of the Gods Title
My Take: 2 out of 5 - This was a squash that made the other wrestlers look weak, but made Strong look like an embodiment of his name. There isn’t much to say about all of this, other than I hate it when other athletes get ignored for one person. Strong doesn’t need to be put over other people like this and would have been better off being booked based off of his successes in the WWE. Strong could...

Welcome to this week’s Lucha Underground review, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and we have… murder! Oh, by the way, we will use a review of Lu from WrestlingInc that was written by Joseph James, to provide extra context for this review. Please feel free to visit WrestlingInc if you’d like to see more of their news and reviews about professional wrestling.
Match #1: Matanza Cueto beat Jack Evans The following is courtesy of WrestlingInc and Joseph James:
Jack avoids Matanaza, rips off a turnbuckle, and pushes Matanza into head first. He goes up and hits a cannonball 630! Jack goes for a cover but Matanza just lifts him up and gives him the Wrath of the Gods for the win.
My Take: 1.5 out of 5 – Matanza squashed a wrestler who is leaving the league. Jack got tired of Ivelisse’s politicking, as well as other things...

Match #1: El Dragon Azteca Jr. beat Ivelisse – Gift of the Gods Championship Match The following is courtesy of Joseph James and WrestlingInc.com:
Ivelisse gains an early advantage with a few nice arm drags, followed by frankensteiner from the middle rope. Dragon Azteca catches Ivelisse with a running crescent kick in the middle of her suicide dive attempt, and begins to work on the left arm to wear Ivelisse down. Azteca shows off some nice submission skills with a Boston Crab and a crossface, but Ivelisse uses her Mma background to escape.
Ivelisse begins a comeback and lands a gorgeous tornado Ddt in the center of the...

Welcome to the Lucha Underground review, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and this was a lousy episode of Lucha Underground, so don’t expect much.
Match #1: Jake Strong beat Drago
This was a nice little match that was an even affair for both men. Both competitors looked good here and were able to show what they can do. It was nice to see that the difference in size was ignored, as that part of booking and promoting has been out-dated for close to thirty years. If Bruce Lee can legitimately beat an opponent of any size (people didn’t go watch his movies because he could act) then why can’t professional wrestling completely embrace a short man beating a tall man? People like Vince McMahon and Billy Corgan need to let go of the size thing, because people don’t care about if Rey Mysterio is shorter than the Undertaker,...

Welcome to this week’s Lucha Underground review, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and we have a few big matches to cover here, so let’s do so.
Match #1: Mil Muertes (w/ Catrina) beat The Mack – Haunted House Match
This was a good match that brought Halloween a few months early. The idea here was that they had half of the inventory from Party City to attack each other with. This was like watching the Scott Steiner/Jeff Jarrett brawl from Tna/Impact that was booked to be Mick Foley’s idea. If Lou Thesz was here, he’d cut a promo on how stupid these two guys were for working a match like this and how bad their gimmicks are. The Mack deserves more than just being fodder for Mil, who is talented, but not likely to go too much farther with this character. Mil is a fun gimmick,...

Match #1: Jake Strong beat Sammy Guevara
This was a quick one that gave Strong the chance to dominate and get over as a wrestling machine. Strong is finally getting to do what he should have been doing in the WWE when he was Jack Swagger, but Vince would not allow it. Strong’s ankle lock is fantastic and could even rival Kurt Angle’s at this point. Sammy was great here, making a horrifying flip off the balcony onto Strong in true luchador style. Sammy may have hurt his ankle, but since it played into the finish, it may have well been part of the plan. Over-all, this was a fun way to start the show.

Welcome to this week’s Lucha Underground review on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and we should get right to the action!
Match #1: Big Bad Steve lost to Jake Strong
My Take: As matches go, this was not what you would call “ambitious”. The whole idea was to introduce Jake Strong, who is the former WWE World Heavyweight Champion Jack Swagger. Strong typically got the wrong end of the deal while working for Vince McMahon, with most of his momentum halted just as he was starting to gain some steam. Strong looks so different outside the WWE, despite having an identical look to his WWE days. It could be said that Strong’s training for Bellator has had an effect on his confidence (and that’s likely true) but I’d argue that it’s simply a thrill for any wrestler to go to work without having to run...
