Netflix is continuing to slowly build out its offerings of live sports.
There’s a very clear strategy unfolding at Netflix when it comes to live sports. Its Netflix Cup live golf tournament from November was the service's first attempt at offering any sports event, and was packed with big-name personalities from its docuseries “Formula 1: Drive to Survive and “Full Swing.” The company is returning to that strategy for its next live sports event, a tennis match between two of the biggest names in the sport.
Netflix will host a live tennis match between Carlos Alcaraz and Rafael Nadal on Sunday, March 3. Alcaraz is the second-ranked men’s tennis player in the world, while Nadal is a legend of the sport who may return for his last season in 2024. The tennis match leaves room for yet more questions about Netflix’s live sports intentions. Sign Up $6.99+ / month netflix.com...

Netflix is adamant that it’s not interested in live sports.
“We are in the sports business, but we’re in the part of the sports business that we bring the most value to, which is the drama of sport, Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos said on the company’s third-quarter earnings call.
Sarandos was referring to sports docu-series such as Drive To Survive, Full Swing, Quarterback and Beckham.
He added that there was no “core change” in its live sports strategy. This comes after Netflix set its first live sports event.

NFL great Tom Brady has become a minority owner of English second-tier soccer team Birmingham City and wants to bring a winning mentality to an underperforming club.
The seven-time Super Bowl champion has partnered with the club’s holding company, U.S.-based Knighthead Capital Management, and becomes chairman of a new advisory board, Brady and Birmingham said Thursday.
“Maybe you are asking, ‘What do you know about English football, Tom?’” Brady said in a club video. “Well, let’s just say I’ve got a lot to learn. But I do know a few things about winning.”
Birmingham said Brady will “apply his extensive leadership experience and expertise across several components of the club.” That includes working alongside the sports science department to advise on health, nutrition and recovery programs.

The Wrexham effect is in full force.
Tom Brady has followed in the footsteps of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney by entering the U.K. soccer business.
The seven-time Super Bowl champion has become a minority owner of Birmingham City, which plays in the second-tier Championship division. Brady entered a partnership with the club’s new owners, Knighthead Capital Management. With the deal, the former NFL star becomes chairman of a new advisory board at St. Andrew’s and, according to Knighthood co-founder Tom Wagner, will “have a direct impact on the club,” which will benefit from his knowledge.
“Birmingham City is an iconic club with so much history and passion, and to be part of the Blues is a real honour for me,” said Brady. “I’ve been part of some amazing teams in my day, and I’m looking forward to applying my perspective to create that same success here in Birmingham.

Surrounded is the latest in a long line of black-themed Westerns that stretches from early efforts like The Bull-Dogger and Harlem on the Prairie through John Ford’s Sergeant Rutledge and Blazing Saddles. Blacksploitation star Fred Williamson had a string of horse operas, such as Take a Hard Ride and the provocatively titled Boss N*gger, one of three films he made to use that word in the title. More recently we’ve had Django Unchained and Murder at Yellowstone City, neither of which impressed me. Can this unhyped and unheralded entry in the genre deliver the goods?

And now for something completely different: After attracting attention and appreciation with his debut feature, “Monster,” a riveting contemporary drama about a Black high school honor student charged as an accessory to a fatal shooting in his Harlem neighborhood, director Anthony Mandler continues to impress with his sophomore effort, “Surrounded,” an exceptionally well-crafted Western that spins a gripping, racially charged tale of suspicion, deception and survival in post-Civil War New Mexico. Echoes of Sergio Leone, Budd Boetticher and John Ford abound throughout the sturdy screenplay by Andrew Pagana and Justin Thomas. But the movie is less a genre pastiche than a multifaceted character study in which perfectly cast lead players Letitia Wright (“Black Panther”) and Jamie Bell (“Snowpiercer”) do most of the narrative heavy lifting.

With the writers strike sowing doubt about long-term scripted entertainment, and the overall advertising market still in a downturn, Warner Bros. Discovery and other major media companies are now leaning into a form of entertainment that has proven to be resilient: Live sports.
And it is a particularly strong moment for sports at Wbd, which is fresh off the March Madness basketball tournament, at the beginning of the MLB season, and smack in the middle of the NBA and NHL playoffs.
“Our strategy in many ways is very different from other players, right? We’re not into tonnage, we’re really about picking and having the most premium sports out there,” says Luis Silberwasser, the chairman and CEO of Wbd Sports. “Whether it’s on TNT or TBS, or TruTV, it just it creates a cultural moment, right? So when these games are happening on primetime, people come to us.

Anthony Mandler directed the feature, which has been in post-production since early 2021.
Andrew Pagana and Justin Thomas penned the script, which is set five years after the Civil War, where former Buffalo Soldier Moses “Mo” Washington travels west to lay claim on a gold mine bequeathed by her late slaveowner father. It is a mean, dangerous world for an unaccompanied Black woman and so Mo travels into the deep frontier disguised as a man. Albany (The Bahamas), Nov 29 (Ians) Tiger Woods’ much-awaited return to competition will have to wait a little longer. The 46-year-old, 15-time Major champion, Woods was hoping to play his first competitive round since the 150th Open at St. Andrews at his own event, the Hero World Challenge. However, a foot injury due to ‘plantar fasciitis’ has forced him to pull out of the event.
Woods, who co-founded the Hwc, has rarely missed the event, which is being sponsored by World’s No. 1 two-wheeler company, Hero MotoCorp, for the eighth year in a row.
Addressing a press conference ahead of the Hero World Challenge at Albany in the Bahamas, Tiger Woods said, “Well, it was a tough decision just because I want to play. I like playing, I like competing, but unfortunately, I can hit the golf ball and hit whatever shot you want, I just can’t walk. And so...

So much for Tiger Woods’ planned return to competitive golf this week.
The five-time Masters champ and winner of 15 major titles, who was in a devastating car crash early last year, tweeted today that foot problems caused by plantar fasciitis are “making it difficult to walk” and that he has withdrawn from the Hero World Challenge. He still plans to host the Bahamas tourney, which was set to be his first PGA Tour event after more than four months.
The condition causes a painful inflammation of tissue that connects the heel bone to the toes.

The Albany (Bahamas), Nov 28 (Ians) Tiger Woods makes his long-awaited return to action this week as the 15-time Major winner competes for the first time since July at the Hero World Challenge.
Before that the only events he turned up for were the Masters and the PGA Championship. Yet, between now and the end of 2022, Woods will be seen in action at the Hero World Challenge, a high-profile event that has just 20 players, all of them barring three are inside Top-23 of the world.
Two of the other three, Kevin Kisner (31) and Corey Conners, a late replacement for the injured Hideki Matsuyama (19) add to the field. Only Woods, the host is specially ‘exempt’ at 1277, not having played since the Open and only three events for a total of nine rounds – four at the Masters, three at PGA before withdrawing and two at the Open before missing the cut at St Andrews.

During today’s third round of U.S. Open golf that featured a record-breaking score of 63 by Justin Thomas, there was also action in the skies over Wisconsin’s Erin Hills Golf Course. Golfer Justin Thomas was in an unprecedented zone Saturday, shooting a nine-under-par 63 to take the lead heading into the final round of the 117th United States Open Championship at Erin Hills in Wisconsin. Thomas capped his performance, which set a record for strokes under par in a round at a U.S. Open, with an eagle at the 18th and final hole, but the most memorable part of his round came earlier in the day, when he hit an insane, miniature-golf inspired birdie putt at the 5th hole from off the green that started uphill and curved at a nearly 90-degree angle.
