A laughter-spiked drama starring Tina Fey as a rookie Afghan war correspondent is like Mash but with too much cheese
Adapted from a factual book by the war correspondent Kim Barker, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot is not the first film to deal with the addictive qualities of combat. The Hurt Locker cast a cool eye over the adrenaline hit that hooks bomb-disposal experts; more recently the documentaries Which Way Is the Front Line from Here? The Life and Time of Tim Hetherington and Only the Dead explored the thrill that sends reporters after stories that could claim their lives. But this is one of the first to look at the lure of the frontline from a female perspective.
Tina Fey is well cast as Barker, an inexperienced reporter who finds herself flung into the “Kabubble”: the hard-living, hothouse community of war correspondents stationed in Afghanistan during the ongoing war. Spiked with gallows humour,...

★★★☆☆ Is it possible, or even a good idea, to make a comedy about the war in Afghanistan? Directorial duo Glenn Ficara and John Requa certainly seem to think so. Partnering up with the ever wonderful Tina Fey and her regular writing collaborator Robert Carlock, the team adapts the memoir of Chicago Tribune reporter Kim Barker, who spent three years covering the conflict, in Whiskey Tango Foxtrot. Though the film largely skirts around the region's socio-political minefield, favouring a story of personal development, the title's questionable shorthand does a disservice to the depth of a piece that has more to it than meets the eye.

When reporter Kim Baker’s (Tina Fey) life needs something more, she decides to ‘shake it all up’ by taking an assignment in a war zone. There, in the midst of chaos, she finds the strength she never knew she had. Sometimes it takes saying ‘Wtf’ to find the life you were always destined to have.

Eric here with a take on the new Tina Fey film Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, an adaptation of journalist Kim Barker’s memoir of her three years as a war reporter in Afghanistan.
It’s hard to watch Wtf and not think of the film’s clear antecedent, Barry Levinson’s Good Morning, Vietnam with Robin Williams: both films are custom-tailored star vehicles that take a Western audience into a foreign culture, finding a tone between the comedy we expect from the leads, and light drama that allows them to expand their personas a bit...

I'm not sure Tina Fey was meant to be a movie star. She is, no question about it, a dazzling wit, and I think she can be very funny onstage as well. So far, though, Hollywood has not figured out what to do with Fey as a leading actress because she simply doesn't fit the cookie-cutter archetypes that so many actresses are forced to play, and it's left her in a weird place as an actress. She's obviously talented, but who's writing the roles that she could play? As it turns out, all it takes are directors like Glenn Ficarra and John Requa and a writer like Robert Carlock, who worked with Fey on 30 Rock and The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. I like Ficarra and Requa. I don't think every film they've made is great, but they have a good eye for both character and detail. My favorite film of theirs is still I Love You,...

Where They From: Ficarra & Requa and the Privileged Perspective
Cinematic depictions of the ongoing conflict(s) in the Middle East continue to be a touchy subject, particularly for those English language illustrations daring to convey a certain satirical element involving the U.S. presence there. While pleasing everyone is never a possibility, there are several elements about Glenn Ficarra and John Requa’s Whiskey Tango Foxtrot which could have been easily remedied to avoid inarguable ire, namely with its severely miscast supporting actors. Based on the 2011 memoirs of journalist Kim Barker, The Taliban Shuffle: Strange Days in Afghanistan and Pakistan, this is provocative subject matter made all the more alluring by the self-aware talents of Tina Fey doing her best to subvert our expectations of a white, privileged perspective. Overall, the end product has too many glaring demerits to warrant praise, but as a showcase for a well-rounded serious...

Go behind the scenes with @TannerZee as he interviews Tina Fey and Margot Robbie about Whiskey Tango Foxtrot.
In 2011, Kim Barker, an Afghanistan war correspondent, told the story of her experiences behind enemy lines in her book "The Taliban Shuffle: Strange Days in Afghanistan and Pakistan." Strangely enough, a New York Times review of the novel said that Kim depicted herself “as a sort of Tina Fey character.” This is what drew Fey to the book and, eventually, the role of Barker in the film adaptation Whiskey Tango Foxtrot. Just a couple of weeks before the release, I headed to New York to talk with Tina Fey, the cast, and the real Kim Barker herself!

In Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, Tina Fey plays a journalist sent to Afghanistan in 2003 when the more-experienced war correspondents flock to the new battlefields of Iraq. Produced by Fey and loosely based on reporter Kim Barker’s memoir “The Taliban Shuffle: Strange Days in Afghanistan and Pakistan,” the film continues Fey’s pursuit of more dramatic roles, a less-than-stellar quest so far that might cause some audience members to balk at this one. However, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot is the exception to that rule – actually a very entertaining film, thanks largely to a strong supporting cast that includes Martin Freeman, Billy Bob Thornton, and Alfred Molina, who take the pressure off Fey.
In case any one is in doubt, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot (meaning Wtf – get it?) is not a hard-hitting war movie or even really about war, but a tale of war...

Chicago – In 2011, author Kim Barker released a press memoir with the odd title of “The Taliban Shuffle: Strange Days in Afghanistan and Pakistan.” Tina Fey was interested in adapting the book for film – and portraying Barker – so “Whiskey Tango Foxtrot” was born. The film opens on March 4th, 2016.
Kim Barker was the South Asia bureau chief for The Chicago Tribune from 2004 to 2009, based in New Delhi and Islamabad. Her press memoir covers her years there, through the rise of the Taliban in Afghanistan and Pakistan, the corruption in Afghanistan, and the assassination of former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. In the film version based on the book, they altered Ms. Barker’s name – she is Kim Baker as portrayed by Tina Fey – and instead of being a print reporter, the Fey character is a on-air broadcast journalism. But the morality of the book remains in the film, and the...

For obvious reasons, war movies typically follow the perspective of the soldier on the ground. So "Whiskey Tango Foxtrot" is immediately distinguished by its lead, a TV journalist breaking stories in Afghanistan during the mid-aughts. Tina Fey stars as as the reporter, Kim Baker (loosely based on Kim Barker, author of the memoir "The Taliban Shuffle," on which the movie is based), and she rises to the challenge of the role that requires the former “30 Rock” actor to do a lot more than just adapt her comic voice to the story's particulars. Comedic and dramatic potential are present in equal measure in Baker's narrative and directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa ("Focus," "Crazy Stupid Love") do well navigating some of the turns of her story, creating situations that allow Fey to alternate between sardonic and self-effacing wit. Odd casting decisions, however, and a script that flounders after establishing the strange...

It’s startlingly easy to forget that America is still at war, and while the minutiae of the definition has shifted with the decades, it’s a persistent influence on our view of present and future foreign policy. Glenn Ficarra and John Requa’s Whiskey Tango Foxtrot is emblematic of this reality, but for all the wrong reasons.
Adapted from Kim Barker’s book, “The Taliban Shuffle,” which follows Barker’s time as a foreign correspondent in Pakistan and Afghanistan, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot is a galling, casually offensive, and deeply unsatisfying film. The story establishes Barker (Tina Fey) as an office drone at an unspecified outlet, bored senseless by her life until she’s selected as a potential correspondent for Afghanistan thanks to her unmarried, childless status.
Soon she’s flying to meet her fixer, Fahim Ahmadzai (a capable, but nonetheless symbolically brown-faced Christopher Abbott) in Kabul, and meeting a cast of oddball reporters,...

Without question, Tina Fey is an A-list comedy actress, but I’m not sure how many people realize how good she is at more serious fare. She’s gotten opportunities before, but Fey really gets a chance to shine in Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, which is hitting theaters this week. It’s a dramedy perhaps more at home in the fall than the winter, but it’s a real showcase for Fey, who is quite good in the lead role. If she starts getting offered parts that could lead to an eventual Academy Award nomination in Best Actress or even Best Supporting Actress, this performance will likely be one of the main reasons why. The film is a comedy/dramedy centered on Kim Baker (Fey), a journalist recounting her time covering the war in Afghanistan. Initially stuck in a rut back in New York, Kim opts to leave behind her boyfriend...

Tina Fey and Margot Robbie head to Afghanistan in their latest film Whiskey Tango Foxtrot.
Fey portrays real life journalist Kim Barker and her time covering the war in Afghanistan. Despite the serious events in the backdrop, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot isn't so much a movie about war as it is about the relationships these characters develop while they're across the world. From the looks of it, these will be some strong bonds that will lead to hilarious moments.
We spoke to Fey and Robbie about making the film, and they express that it was a fun time, filled with the kind of parties that the people they portrayed may still be attending right now. It also deals with an adorable romance between Fey and Martin Freeman's character Iain MacKelpie. They are so cute.

In the savvy comedy “Whiskey Tango Foxtrot,” a New York-based news producer leaves behind a cushy yet frustratingly predictable job for the madness of war-torn Afghanistan, becoming something of an adrenaline junkie in the process. That the producer in this case happens to be a woman doesn’t significantly alter this storyline’s trajectory, and that’s one of the film’s smart, satisfying strategies. Based on Kim Barker’s memoir “The Taliban Shuffle: Strange Days in Afghanistan and Pakistan,” the film gives Tina Fey her strongest big-screen role to date. There are some Liz Lemon elements to the character — Kim is a cubicle.
