[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from “Game of Thrones” Season 8, including the finale.]
The final season of “Game of Thrones” has caused controversy over its rushed storytelling that didn’t allow for enough character development, among other complaints. Case in point are Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) and her dark turn into the pyromaniacal Mad Queen and Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) undoing his story of redemption at the 11th hour to die with his sister, even after his eyes had been opened to her selfishness.
Despite all of these perceived narrative failures, Entertainment Weekly reveals that the writers did indeed try to create stories that would stay true to the characters and not just feel contrived. In fact, they wanted desperately to keep one character alive through to the end, but eventually abandoned the idea because it made no logical sense.

While Game of Thrones had several heartbreaking deaths by the end, one in particular was a last-minute decision.
Warning: Major spoilers for Game of Thrones Season 8 ahead!
While Game of Thrones ended things with… let’s just say an unkind crescendo for Team Daenerys, one of the final frame’s most heartbreaking moments for that fandom didn’t occur in the finale, but, rather, Episode 3, “The Long Night,” in which the would-be queen’s famously lovelorn perennial protector, Jorah Mormont, sustained what seemed like countless stabs as her lone line of defense against the invading army of the dead, until finally succumbing to his wounds, only after the battle was won. However, in an intriguing revelation, it turns out that Jorah was originally slated to survive!

Game of Thrones has never been shy about killing off major characters, and the final season of the HBO series certainly found quite a number of high-profile characters meeting their demise, but there was at least one character who was initially supposed to make it to the very end. Game of Thrones racked up quite the body count in its eighth and final season — but the show’s writers nearly subtracted one death from the eventual tally.
Ser Jorah Mormont, who perished in the gruesome Battle of Winterfell during Season 8, was originally going to survive the series, writer Dave Hill told EW.com. Per Hill, Jorah was supposed to end up at The Wall with Jon Snow, who was banished back to the Night’s Watch in the series finale as punishment for killing Daenerys.

There were a lot of gutting character deaths in Game of Thrones' final season, but the ending might have been very different if the writers had stuck to their initial plans and allowed one fan favorite to walk away from the action unscathed.

You’re going to have to find something new to bridge the gap with your Lyft driver, your boss, your agent, and your more distant family members at Thanksgiving. After eight years—eight years!—“Game of Thrones” is coming to an end next week. It feels surreal to leave the world of Dothraki-speaking dragon riders, fiery Free Folk, and the Army of the Dead, but debts have been paid, winter has come and gone, valar morghulis, and so on.
So, in loving tribute to Jon, Arya, Daenerys, Cersei, Tyrion, Hodor, and all the fallen soldiers, we’ve ranked each “Thrones” episode from the worst to the best in time for the highly anticipated series finale. The end result is filled with blood, sweat, severed heads, errant coffee cups, wildfire, and the occasional bit of dragonglass. Here’s an awesome video for all you Game of Thrones fans that shows some super cool behind the scenes footage of the series preparing and shooting for this final season. It includes interviews with David Benioff, writer and executive producer on the show, executive producer Bernadette Caulfield, writer Dave Hill, some backstage footage of Martin Starr (Freaks and Geeks) and Rob McElhenney (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia), who got to guest star in an episode, and lots of regular cast members you all know and love.
A real highlight for the cast and crew though, was when George Lucas stopped by the set unexpectedly. Benioff said that when they heard Lucas was coming by the set, they thought it was a practical joke. But it wasn’t!

The end of the penultimate season of Game of Thrones was the best the HBO blockbuster had ever done with viewers, but last night’s final season opener just put that record on ice.
Back almost two years after Season 7 premiered, Sunday’s “Winterfell” Season 8 debut snared 17.4 million viewers for the premium cabler on-air and HBOGo and HBO Now
Even with a brief leak on DirecTV Now earlier on Sunday and the lon-going lack of HBO on Dish now, that’s up 4% from the Season 7 “The Dragon and the Wolf” ender of August 27, 2017 once all the premium cabler’s linear and digital platforms are added up. An all-time best for any HBO series, the record breaker of last night’s season opener was also way up from the previous season opener record holder of Season 7’s “Dragonstone” of July 16, 2017.
A point that HBO will undoubtedly and rightly emphasis is the...

It was a moment fans had been waiting for since 2017 after the seventh season left many questions unanswered. The GoT mania took Indian fans by storm in the days leading to its final season opener, as pointed out by internal data at Instagram, India.
India emerged as the fourth country globally where users are most excited about the fantasy series and it is the only Asian country to feature in the top five. As per Taboola, Daenerys and Jon Snow are the most read characters with 843,600 and 705,000 readers respectively.

Well, that was fun. “Game of Thrones,” long known for taking its viewers by surprise, returned for its final season premiere Sunday night with a shocking twist: jokes! The one-hour episode was surprisingly lighthearted, and full of witty moments, which will no doubt anger the more bloodthirsty fans who want sword-fighting and dragon-fire now.
Considering how the most recent season ended with everyone on the move, it makes sense that this episode — written by Dave Hill and directed by David Nutter — takes time to once again set up the chessboard. Plus, with so many puzzle pieces to service all coming together after seasons of teasing these meetups, it’s necessary to address the history that has passed and how they know each other. However, it makes for a static episode where scene after scene is glorified exposition peppered with wry jabs.

“Maybe it really is all cocks in the end,” Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) muses toward the beginning of “The Dragon and the Wolf,” the Season 7 finale of “Game of Thrones.” It’s perhaps a more telling moment than we realize, when you look at the writers and directors the show has employed over the last seven seasons.
It’s not breaking news that the series, executive produced by D.B. Just when it was all going so well for Petyr Baelish—he’d manipulated and murdered his way to becoming Lord Protector of the Vale, he had the ear of the Lady of Winterfell and was inches from getting her dangerous little sister out of the way—it was over. One slash of an assassin’s dagger and Littlefinger, the man whose machinations were responsible for so much strife, was a bloody puddle on Sansa’s floor.
There was poetic justice in the choice of weapon used in his execution. Arya slashed Baelish’s throat with the very dagger he had given to an assassin to kill Bran in season one.

Disclaimer: This post contains spoilers for Game of Thrones Season 7, Episode 5.
Game of Thrones fans have been treated to a wonderful season thus far, lots of action and excitement, and long awaited character meetings were finally realized. Last night’s episode, “Eastwatch”, brought back a character that many fans feel was gone for far too long. That character is Gendry Baratheon. Gendry, who is one of former king Robert Baratheon’s many, many, bastards, was last seen in Season 3, Episode 10, when Ser Davos Seaworth helped him escape from Melisandre. We last see Gendry row away into the sea. For all we know he had been rowing around in the ocean all this time, and we half expected him to return with arms the size of Dwayne Johnson’s.

As it turns out, Gendry Baratheon has been hiding right under Cersei’s nose, in King’s Landing.

Does the lack of travelling on Game Of Thrones bother the viewing audience? It seems to be something brought up consistently; the characters appear to fly around the continent of Westeros without much concern for travelling time. They move from location to location without any real time passing between set-ups. [Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Game of Thrones” Season 7, Episode 5, “Eastwatch.”]
There’s nothing quite like a new location on the great moving “Game of Thrones” opening credits map, is there? Even with the well-informed geographical layout of Westeros that’s been slowly unspooled over the course of nearly seven seasons, every new opportunity to face a new foe brings with it the accompanying chance to carve out a new corner of map.
For this week’s episode, Eastwatch may not have made its full, grand entrance until the closing sequences, as unlikely allies go out to face the dangers beyond The Wall, but the remainder of “Eastwatch” brings reminders that “Game of Thrones” excels when it shows just how expansive this world can be. By combining that growing map with a sharpening sense of how would-be rulers keep a firm grasp on their part of the territory, it shows just how much everyone stands to lose if they’re looking in the wrong direction.

"They'll bend the knee, or I'll destroy them." Sound familiar?
No, it's not the very similar dialogue spoken by Daenerys Targaryen near the beginning og tonight's rich and rewarding Game of Thrones episode ""Eastwatch." These were the words of Stannis Baratheon, rightful heir to the Iron Throne – before he murdered his brother, burned his daughter alive, saw his army slaughtered and died at the business end of a Valyrian steel sword.
Compare and contrast his remark with what Dany tells the Lannister forces she captured after last week's brutal battle.

These were the words of Stannis Baratheon, rightful heir to the Iron Throne – before he murdered his brother, burned his daughter alive, saw his army slaughtered and died at the business end of a Valyrian steel sword.
Compare and contrast his remark with what Dany tells the Lannister forces she captured after last week's brutal battle.

Game Of Thrones season 6 is truly living up to the show's reputation for bloody murder. Major spoilers ahead..
This review contains spoilers.
6.2 Home
The motto of this show has been the same since the very beginning. When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die. Sometimes, just when it seems like winning is right around the corner, it turns out to be a nasty case of death instead. Westeros is a land where good, honorable people die terrible deaths, and also a land where despicable people die terrible deaths as well. Generally, everyone dies a terrible death. Valar morghulis.
Once upon a time, during the War of Five Kings, Balon Greyjoy (Patrick Malahyde) was considered an actual king. Sure, he only ruled the Iron Islands, and through them the northern seas, but still, that's a kingdom, albeit a nautically-based one. Now, the three Baratheon combatants are dead,...

A review of tonight's Game of Thrones coming up just as soon as you punch me in the face the next time I have an idea like that... "We all fail sometimes." -Jaime You guys... Jon Snow is alive! I know, I know... I'm as shocked as you are. Which is to say, not particularly shocked, and slightly disappointed at how "Home" presented the resurrection we all knew was coming. Look, George R.R. Martin did the show no favors with that particular cliffhanger. Even before the Nsa started tracking Kit Harington's movements in and out of Belfast, GoT fandom at large had all come to the conclusion that Jon Snow's death wouldn't stick, since it would be awful storytelling to eliminate the only relevant character in what was increasingly turning out to be the most important locale in the entire show(*). And most of us assumed that Melisandre would probably be involved,...

"Lord of the Rings" screenwriter Philippa Boyens will helm Disney's newest film franchise, "Merlin", based on the "Merlin Saga" from author T.A. Barron. Philippa Boyens is the perfect person to adapt this series, because she has spent the last 20 years of her life adapting two other wonderful book series for the big screen: "The Hobbit" and "Lord of the Rings". Boyens even took home an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay in 2004 for her work on "Return of the King", which she shares with Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh. This version of "Merlin" will focus on the wizard's early life, as written in T.A. Barron's book, "Merlin, The Lost Years"."The Lost Years" is book one in a 10-book series, which means if "Merlin" does well at the box office, it could launch an entire franchise of films. "The Merlin Saga" has experienced an interesting journey in its years on the Hollywood market.

All praise goes to the fight scene choreography in this week's Game Of Thrones, a show where fighting defines character...
This review contains spoilers.
5.4 Sons Of The Harpy
I am not sure who creates the fight scenes for Game Of Thrones, but they clearly need a raise. From what I've been able to track down on the show's very exhaustive cast list, the man responsible for the fights in this week's episode is Paul Shapcott, who did similar work on the various Peter Jackson Tolkien films and multiple seasons of Spartacus, two very popular, very clever properties that depended a great deal on swords to advance the plot. I know there are many more people involved in the stabbing and slashing aspects of Game Of Thrones: Pedro Pascal's wushu spear trainer Master Hu took a bite out of the Mountain, swordmaster Cc Smiff was the mastermind behind Brienne...

Well, Throners, last week’s episode was a doozy, an excellent doozy, and this week’s “Sons of the Harpy” is somehow even better. Mark Mylod is killing it! All of the Emmys for Mark Mylod. This episode is written by Dave Hill, and it’s excellent — a good mix of political scheming, shading in of backstory via remembrance, and those GoT mic drop lines we’ve come to know and love. Once again this is an action-packed ep, and there’s a wonderful sense of style to all of the senseless killing, which is technically why we watch this show, right? But in all seriousness, this week illuminates much of the inner mental, emotional workings of some of our more stoic characters, and as gears are cranking on what is surely a war to come, many of these characters are having to lay their cards on the table, and...

Last season there was a small kerfuffle when, out of nowhere, the Night’s King showed up and transformed Craster’s son into one of his own. Or something very similar. Because that baby is definitely not a zombie, leading to all kinds of questions about the nature of the Others. Anyway, the point is that so far George R.R. Martin has had no chapters featuring the Night’s King in any of his published books. So for once it was book fans who were smacked with an emotional twist. Was this a spoiler from “The Winds of Winter”??? Probably. And if you want to remain a novel purist, you’re going to have to avoid Season 5 of “Game of Thrones” like the Greyscale plague. Staff writer Dave Hill’s official show blog has been peppering hints for the next season, including information for at least one major book mystery.

Here's a quick bit of movie news for you. Game of Thrones writer Dave Hill and Hanna writer David Farr are teaming up to develop a new live-action Merlin movie for Warner Bros.
The movie will be produced by Donald De Line, who has been taking pitches for a Merlin film, and he apparently loved what the two guys brought to the table.
There's no director attached, or details on the story, but it centers on Merlin so it shouldn't be too hard to imagine what it could end up being.
