Said to be a hallucinogenic urban exploration horror story, Black Mold has the following synopsis: Photographer Brooke and her pal Tanner sneak into abandoned, off-limits buildings for the sake of their art and also the adrenaline rush. But when the daredevil pair break into their holy grail – Franklin Hill, a large facility with a history – they encounter a dangerously paranoid squatter who holds them captive. The longer their attacker keeps them there,...

Billed as a “hallucinogenic urban exploring horror movie,” John Pata’s Black Mold won Best Indie Feature at this year’s Panic Fest in the US, and it’s coming to Tubi this week.
Black Mold will exclusively debut on Tubi Thursday, December 7.
In the film, “Photographer Brooke and her pal Tanner (Andrew Bailes) sneak into abandoned, off-limits buildings for the sake of their art and also the adrenaline rush. But when the daredevil pair break into their holy grail – Franklin Hill, a large facility with a history – they encounter a dangerously paranoid squatter who holds them captive.
“The longer their attacker keeps them there, the more it becomes clear there’s something else profoundly wrong with the place as dangers surface at the intersection of artistic pursuits and internal sabotage.”
This one comes from the producers of Brooklyn 45 and The Stylist.

We Are Still Here and Mohawk director Ted Geoghegan‘s supernatural horror film Brooklyn 45 is set to start streaming on both the Shudder and AMC+ services next month – on June 9th, to be exact – and today a trailer for the film has arrived online to start building the hype. You can check it out in the embed above.
Scripted by Geoghegan and his late father, a disabled Air Force Veteran-turned-history teacher, Brooklyn 45 has the following synopsis: Friday, December 27, 1945. Five military veterans gather in the ornate parlour of a Brooklyn brownstone. Best friends since childhood, they’ve reunited to support their troubled host – but when his invitation for cocktails turns into an impromptu séance, the metaphoric ghosts of their past become all-too-literal. Trapped in their host’s lounge, the Greatest Generation now finds themselves put to one final test…with their only route to freedom being more bloodshed.

With a tip of the hat to Agatha Christie and a nod toward “Twelve Angry Men,” writer-director Ted Geoghegan (“Mohawk”) skillfully sustains suspense and showcases a strong cast in “Brooklyn 45,” a supernatural-themed chamber drama about a small group of World War II vets entangled in a séance where visits from the restless departed are hardly the worst threat to participants. Set for a June 9 premiere on the Shudder streaming service after a sprint on the festival circuit, the film impresses as a well-crafted period piece with some pointed observations about paranoia and xenophobia that feel, discomfortingly, as relevant as recent news reports about over-reactions by stand-your-ground shooters.
It’s a cold December evening in 1945 when Lt. Col. Clive “Hock” Hockstatter (Larry Fessenden) summons to his Park Slope, Brooklyn brownstone four friends whose lives, like his, have been drastically affected by their recent wartime experiences: Marla Sheridan (Anne Ramsay), a...

Check out a first-look sneak peek at director John Pata’s Black Mold via the clip below.

Holy hell this year’s SXSW Film Festival isn’t messing around.
The official lineup has just been revealed and it’s a banger, starting off with a special screening of Evil Dead Rise!
In addition, they have several prominent horror titles that will premiere as part of the Midnighters program, including the Sundance hit Talk to Me and the surprise sequel to Becky, The Wrath of Becky!
“Midnighters don’t need to be exclusively horror films, they just need to perk you up and get your blood pumping,” said Peter Hall, Film & TV Festival Programmer. “That’s why this year’s SXSW Midnighters class is a mix of horror, bone-crunching action, and mind-melting genre hybrids. Some of them introduce new, terrifying lore to the canon of suburban horror movies, some will worm around in your brain like thoughts you can’t shake, but all of them will make you...

Disney director Chris Williams left the studio after 25 years to pursue his animated dream project: “The Sea Beast,” an adventure in the tradition of “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” that’s now streaming on Netflix. The film is about legendary sea monster hunter Jacob (Karl Urban), who pursues the Red Leviathan with the aid of an orphaned stowaway, Maisie (Zaris-Angel Hator). She eventually bonds with and befriends the creature, which echoes “How to Train Your Dragon.”
“This is one of those where I have to go all the way back to the movies that I loved the most when I was a kid,” Williams told IndieWire. “The ’70s version of ‘King Kong,’ the Ray Harryhausen stop-motion, action-adventure movies about leaving the known world and venturing off into the unknown. They really touched a nerve in me, and I’ve always wanted to make one of those movies.”

Maisie Brumble, the feisty protagonist of The Sea Beast, is a small girl with a gigantic personality and off-the-charts chutzpah. As the story opens she’s determined to claim her place in her seafaring country’s monster-hunting tradition; by the time it wraps, she’s turned that tradition inside out, in ways that are not only incisive and profound but deeply affecting. Chris Williams, whose helming credits include Big Hero 6 and Moana, has made a rousing, terrific-looking film, one whose emotional currents are all the more potent for being underplayed amidst the derring-do.
The frenetic busyness of the opening sequences might suggest we’re being lured into familiar, action-heavy animation territory. To be sure, there’s plenty of strong action, battles and otherwise, in The Sea Beast, along with leavening touches of the sweet and adorable. But as Maisie’s tale unfolds,...

Michael Stanley, who parlayed rocker stardom in the ’70s and ’80s into successful stints in radio and television in his later years, died Friday of lung cancer at his home. He was 72 and his death was confirmed by his manager.
Stanley’s rock career was solid in Ohio and the Midwest, but never quite broke through nationally, save for his hit song He Can’t Love You. He later was an afternoon drive DJ and Saturday mornings host playing classic rock on radio station 98.5 Wncx. He was at the station for more than 30 years, ending his stint just last month when ill health overtook him.
He also won 11 local Emmy Awards as co-host of Wjw Channel 8′s Pm Magazine from 1987 to 1990, and then spent another year on the station’s Cleveland Tonight. He played himself on an episode of The Drew Carey Show.

Celebrated shorts director Jill Gevargizian steps it up a notch with this sumptuously shot low-rent serial killer drama; a mature, empathetic adaptation of her well-regarded short of the same name, that expands on its eponymous lead in all the right ways.
Surprisingly powerful in its execution, Gevargizian’s full-blooded The Stylist tackles gentle loner Claire (Najarra Townsend); a hair stylist with a murderous secret, who uses her trusted (and largely anonymous) position cutting hair to silently obsess over the lives of her glamorous customers, before ending them for good. But when a particularly friendly new bride-to-be (indie horror legend Brea Grant) gets a little too close for comfort, Claire finds her hyper-repressed exterior slowly starting to break apart at the seams, with the violent killer within sprawling out for all to see.
And despite a fair few grisly moments (played out with some beautifully realised practical effects), it’s this...
