Dr. Death season 2, a Peacock original drama series, has brought to light a critical medico-legal scam committed by thoracic surgeon Paolo Macchiarini. Paolo treated several patients with severe tracheal damage and replaced their damaged windpipes with a synthetic-seeded artificial trachea, which had caused even further damage to the patients. In this eight-episode series, the portrayal of these patients by Paolo Macchiarini is based on real-life people who eventually failed to make it out alive. A terminal cancer patient named Christopher Lyle, a Russian dancer named Yulika Tulik, and a little kid named Hannah Warren all became guinea pigs in Paolo’s experiment with the stem cell trachea that eventually killed them all. Let’s discuss more about these patients, who have been portrayed in the series.

An investigative journalist falls for her subject: A handsome, world-renowned surgeon.
That logline could be the start of a rom-com. Instead, it’s the beginning of a sinister story, one that’s told on Dr. Death.
The second season of the Peacock anthology based on the Wondery podcast brings to screen the true-crime story of Paolo Macchiarini (played by Édgar Ramírez), the pioneering Italian surgeon whose revolutionary biosynthetic tracheas could be a medical solution to the traditional trachea transplant. His work is so impressive, he becomes the subject of a TV profile from New York journalist, and former NBC producer, Benita Alexander (Mandy Moore), who — spoiler alert — ends up contributing to a much more important Vanity Fair article that ultimately unmasks the real Paolo Macchiarini.

In the Peacock original drama Dr. Death, one of the most gut-wrenching episodes was Episode 5, which showcased a Turkish patient, Yesim Cetir, and her family putting their immense faith in Dr. Macchiarini, only to experience a devastating betrayal. Portrayed by Alisha Erozer, Yesim Cetir is based on the story of a real-life Turkish patient with severe tracheal damage, which has been brought to light in Dr. Death Season 2 Episode 5. Yesim Cetir’s journey was based on a true story, while the makers took some creative liberties and added depth to her character arc, which helped us get to know her better and to empathize with the pain she had suffered from.
What happened to Yesim Cetir?
We don’t have proper background details on Yesim Cetir, but the series has masterfully established her journey, showing us how Yesim might have been in real life. Yesim, in this series, has a...

A Peacock original, Dr. Death season 2, brings to light one of the most notorious medico-legal cases involving terrible misconduct in regenerative medicine. Dr. Paolo Macchiarini, an Italian thoracic surgeon, came up with an artificial trachea made of stem cells to replace damaged tracheas. Initially, the stem cell trachea seemed to be a medical miracle, helping Dr. Macchiarini to become a celebrity surgeon overnight, but with the help of his fellow doctors, who ultimately blew the whistles, Macchiarini’s wrongdoings came to light. In Dr. Death season 2, an eight-part drama series, the makers took creative liberties and made certain changes in the characterization of these three most important whistleblowers, Dr. Ana Lasbrey, Nathan Ganelli, and Anders Svensson, who were loosely based on the four significant real-life doctors from Karolinska. Let’s learn about these fictional characters and their similarities to the real-life ones in detail.

When Mandy Moore was first approached about starring in Season 2 of “Dr. Death,” she was ready to branch out.
“I just was so excited to take on something that just felt different from anything I’ve ever done before,” Moore told TheWrap. The Peacock original marks the first major television series the actor has starred in since the conclusion of “This Is Us.” But it was the knowledge that Édgar Ramírez would be part of this project as well that really sold the actress on the series.
“We both love Season 1, and I just knew we were going to make something special,” Moore said.
“We really wanted to work together. When I heard that Mandy wanted to do it, I was so happy,” Ramírez told TheWrap, noting that he felt like the planets were going to “align” for them on this project.

There's no disputing that there's a clear villain at the center of Dr. Death Season 2. The second installment of Peacock's true-crime anthology charts the rise and fall of thoracic surgeon Dr. Paolo Macchiarini (Edgar Ramírez), who was hailed as a "miracle man" for his contributions to regenerative medicine, but questions about his lab-grown organs — which were supposedly bathed in a patient's own stem cells — emerged when his transplant recipients began dying. Multiple investigations uncovered damning evidence of wide-ranging fraud, and after a lengthy legal battle, he was convicted of gross assault against three of his patients and sentenced to 30 months in prison in Sweden.

The story of Peacock’s Dr. Death in its second season is really two stories, which intersect through duplicitous surgeon Paolo Macchiarini (Edgar Ramírez).
In one, a respected journalist (Mandy Moore’s Benita) falls in love with a con man, and then eventually retakes control of her life by taking him down. In the other, doctors grow suspicious of, and then work to stop, a celebrated colleague whose supposedly miraculous procedures are actually killing his patients.
Late in the season, a skeptical reporter tells Benita that the former narrative is the more interesting one, since it’s simpler, juicier, more relatable. But the show, created by Ashley Michel Hoban, only really comes alive in the latter. Stitched together, the two halves make for a lumpy, if occasionally gripping, whole.
Though he’s the reason we’re all here, Paolo himself remains something of an enigma. The premiere foreshadows his downfall...

As we sit in the shadows of the Covid-19 pandemic in a society where conspiracy theories and “personal research” are touted, some regard the medical field skeptically. While being fairly paint-by-numbers, a sweeping cast of interviewees and mind-blowing twists and turns make Netflix's Bad Surgeon: Love Under the Knife worth watching.
The latest in a string of true-crime hits on the streaming giant, Love Under the Knife tells a dueling story of the disgraced doctor Paolo Macchiarini, who commits "one of the biggest frauds in modern medical history" (via Netflix) while pulling the wool over the eyes of the woman he (quote-unquote) loves.
The three-part series cemented a stellar debut, rising to second place on the Netflix streaming charts in North America shortly after its release.

Former NBC News producer Benita Alexander made a career out of trusting her gut, but when she met Dr. Paolo Macchiarini, a thoracic surgeon considered a pioneer in the field of regenerative medicine, her instincts went out the window.
What started as a flirtation between a producer and her interview subject quickly blossomed into something more, and despite the ethical concerns about their relationship and Macchiarini's suspicious behavior, Alexander found herself falling in love with the "super-surgeon" who claimed to have developed a groundbreaking synthetic-trachea procedure. Caught up in their fairy-tale romance, Alexander failed to recognize that Macchiarini, who proposed in December 2013, was a fraud in nearly every sense of the word: Not only did he have a secret family in Barcelona, but he misrepresented his research and failed to properly test his plastic tracheas, resulting in the deaths of seven patients.

It’s hard to keep track of all the ethical violations depicted in Bad Surgeon: Love Under the Knife, the new three-part Netflix docuseries whose title suggests a straight-to-cable Nineties TV movie. Some of the sins here on display are, literally, mortal: Paolo Macchiarini, an apparent sociopath, a definite conman, and, worst of all, a surgeon, left a trail of corpses in the wake of his fraudulent stem cell procedures, in which he inserted plastic tracheas into people before even testing them on animals. Others are more venal, if extremely aggravating to journalists.

New doctor. New story. Dr. Death returns with its second season on Peacock on Thursday, December 21, with the focus on “Miracle Man” Paolo Macchiarini (Edgar Ramírez) and Benita Alexander (Mandy Moore), the investigative journalist doing a story on him. “History’s built on lines that we must be willing to cross,” Paolo says in the new trailer, but does he go too far? According to several people at different instances in the video, yes, he does. The implications of his work — he’s taken a 3D-printed trachea and transformed it into a living organ — are historic, and there’s even talk of the Nobel Prize, plus his patients really trust him. But then a patient dies, and Dr. Nathan Gamelli (Luke Kirby) wonders why he’s not being held accountable. Paolo denies that issues are related to his procedure. Watch the full video above for more of the investigation into Paolo.

Dr Death is coming back in a couple months and we have our first look at season two!
Edgar Ramirez and Mandy Moore are starring in the new season of the anthology series on Peacock, as “Miracle Man” Paolo Macchiarini and journalist Benita Alexander.
“The joy of an Anthology series is the freedom to explore variations on a theme. Dr. Death is a show about systemic failures, and this season, these issues reach a global scale,” showrunner Ashley Michel Hoban shared. “Amid complex narratives, we’ve been fortunate to delve deeply into a story that, while entirely unique, remains surprisingly familiar, as it taps into a truly universal part of the human condition: illness. Even putting aside any recent global pandemics, we all know what it’s like to feel sick. It renders us vulnerable, small, in desperate need of help. A doctor we can trust.”

One of Peacock's most successful series, Dr. Death, will be back on the air before the year's end, and we couldn't be more excited.
The streaming service on Friday announced that Dr. Death Season 2 will premiere on Thursday, December 21, 2023.
If you're looking for your Christmas binge, you'll be happy to know that all eight episodes will be available on that date.
What is Dr. Death About?
Dr. Death Season 1, headlined by Joshua Jackson, was highly binge-able, featuring twists and turns that made us want to watch the next episode, so releasing all the episodes at once is a decent tactic.
Obviously, Christopher Duntsch's storyline wrapped up at the end of the season, so the anthology will feature a chilling new story for Dr. Death Season 2.

New season, new deadly doctor: Peacock‘s series “Doctor Death” returns this December with a new eight-episode season.
