"Star Wars" is back, and it's never going away again. When "Star Wars: The Phantom Menace" was released, there was no way in hell I would have expected an invitation to their premiere. After all, I had spent the entire production of the film publishing spoilers, including a review of the script that was published in November of '98. I was The Mighty Moriarty, part of Ain't It Cool News, part of the new unstoppable culture of spoilers, and I knew Lucasfilm wanted nothing to do with me. I had to sneak into the first press screening of the film with someone who had an official invitation. He was stressed the entire time that I was somehow going to get spotted or identified and that he'd get tossed out with me, but nothing happened. It was a press screening, though… not the premiere. The night of the actual premiere, I...

Despite a bunch of bad buzz and poor word of mouth, fans seem to have enjoyed what they saw of RoboCop yesterday during the film’s panel at the 2013 San Diego Comic-Con. Most people were surprised too, as everything we’ve heard about the film has been of the negative variety and I think critics had started to write the film off. Those in attendance were probably expecting something pretty rough so when the footage turned out to actually be alright, it surprised many.
You can check out the reactions from the Twitterphere below. For the most part, it’s all pretty encouraging, though there are a few things that worry me. For one, the film is going for a PG-13 rating and considering that the original was a “hard R,” that’s pretty disappointing. There are also some changes to the story that may not go over well with fans,...

The anthology horror film is back in the wake of the success of chapter-style horror films like The Theatre Bizarre (2011) and its announced follow-up, V/H/S (2012), the soon-to-be-released sequel V/H/S 2 (2013) and The ABC’s of Death (2012).
While this movement generates a good deal of conversation about the fondly remembered Amicus productions of the 1960’s and 1970’s like Dr. Terror’s House Of Horrors (Freddie Francis, 1965), Torture Garden (Freddie Francis, 1967), The House That Dripped Blood (Peter Duffell, 1971) and Asylum (Roy Ward Baker, 1972) among others, the comparison is not exactly accurate across the board.
While the segments of V/H/S are unified by shared visual style and a wraparound story, The Theatre Bizarre and The ABC’s of Death come off as collections of essentially unrelated horror short films loosely bound by a flimsy wraparound segment in the case of The Theatre Bizarre or a basic concept as...

Evil Dead saw its world premiere at SXSW this evening. When the remake was first announced, fans were understandably skeptical, but the gory red band trailer won many over. Did the movie live up to the hype? We have impressions from a number of people who attended the event, and word that a sequel is already in development.
The majority of audience reactions from the screening have been positive, and it looks like Sony will have a big hit with Evil Dead when it is released in April. As long as horror fans turn out to support the movie, a sequel seems like a given. During the Q&A that took place after the screening, director Fede Alvarez announced that he has already started writing the sequel. We’ll have more details on this after post-screening interviews start coming in early next week.
