Netflix’s hyper-specific categories have become something of a punchline over the years. For every general collection of “comedies” and “reality TV,” there are ones like “critically acclaimed LGBTQ TV shows” (“Queer Eye” and “Tales of the City”), “Feel-Good Reality TV” (“The Great British Baking Show” and “Dream Home Makeover”) and “Oddballs and Outcasts” (“Sex Education” and assorted standup specials from men who were bullied in high school). At first, these subgenres just felt like cheeky ways to organize Netflix’s ever-ballooning library. Increasingly, though, it seems as if Netflix originals are pitched and written with an eye toward fitting into these esoteric characterizations.

I’d love to say that I was wowed by Netflix’s series adaption of Kristin Hannah’s novel, Firefly Lane (dropping Wednesday, Feb. 3). Truth be told, I dive into every show that I’m tasked with reviewing hoping the same thing — to be dazzled, stunned, impressed.
I was none of those things. There was nothing there that we haven’t seen before, done smarter, more wittily and incisively, simply better.

Once BH90210 viewers realized that Tori Spelling, Ian Ziering, Jennie Garth et al were playing not their characters, but (versions of) themselves, there was another twist on tap: the actors’ on-screen families were fictitious.
For example, Spelling in real life is wed to Dean McDermott, with whom she has done reality-tv shows and with whom she does have many (five) kids. On BH90210, however, Tori’s husband is named “Nate” (played by Mother May I Sleep With Danger‘s Ivan Sergei), and they have a full half-dozen rugrats.

Even though I went into Legends of Tomorrow‘s midseason premiere with some skepticism because it was set to focus heavily on the romance involving Mona and her wolf-like boyfriend, I found myself walking away from it impressed. If anything, last night’s episode served up the right balance of humor and adventurism that’s made the show all the more enjoyable since its third season.
From the look of it, Mona will become a heavy presence in the series going forward – especially since she’s now of the lycanthropic persuasion herself. Whether or not her dual lifestyle proves permanent, expect to see more of Mona during April 15th’s episode, “Seance and Sensibility.”
