Mark-Paul Gosselaar is looking back at some of the storylines from Saved by the Bell and acknowledging how problematic they are with today’s context in mind.
The actor started a podcast with Saved by the Bell reboot writer Dashiell Driscoll where they rewatch old episodes of the teen sitcom. During an episode of Zack to the Future, Gosselaar said some of the episodes from the show were difficult to watch.
While making an appearance on Pod Meets World with Danielle Fishel, Rider Strong and Will Friedle, Gosselaar opened up about the episodes that he found problematic looking back at them.
“In terms of storylines, there was a few,” he said on the podcast. “There was one where I was basically whoring out Lisa Turtle. I charged people to kiss her without her consent, that was a tough one.”
He continued, “We had to preface the [podcast] episode by saying, ‘We do not condone this,...

It’s All Right: ‘Saved by the Bell’ Cast, Jimmy Fallon and The Roots Remix Show’s Theme Song (Video)
The “Saved by the Bell” cast, Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Tiffani Thiessen, Mario Lopez and Elizabeth Berkley, Jimmy Fallon and The Roots just remixed the show’s classic theme song.
The “Tonight Show” version all starts out normal enough, just with Fallon and Thiessen on the vocals. And then the record scratched.
That’s when Tariq Trotter of The Roots — a.k.a. Black Thought — changed it all up, spitting: “Early ’90s NBC/2020 streaming on Peacock/Pete Engel, show creator/Jessie, Kelly, Zack…”
“A.C. Slater,” Lopez interrupted, himself rapping (decently). “The Preppy hater/The Jessie Spano dater/Life is greater when we’re reunited…”
That was Berkley’s cue to cut in with her “I’m So Excited” gag.
Watch the video above.

The new “Saved by the Bell” announces the kind of comedy it wants to be from the very start, opening with a campaign ad from California Governor Zack Morris (played with a Republican smarm that doesn’t really exist anymore by Mark-Paul Gosselaar). The spot, which feels like it was produced by the same team who worked on Bobby Newport’s “Parks & Recreation” ads, acts as the extremely thin connective thread from the original series to this 2020 “reimagining. Since leaving Bayside nearly 30 years ago, Zack is still, in the parlance of the Funny or Die series, trash, since his rise to the Governor’s mansion was all part of an elaborate scheme to get out of a $75 parking ticket. This sequence also immediately tears down the fourth wall, as Morris mentions that after college he “became a successful trial attorney” with a shot of Gosselaar (flanked by Breckin Meyer) as...

The creator of YouTube series “Zack Morris Is Trash,” Dashiell Driscoll, is a writer on Peacock’s “Saved by the Bell” reboot. But don’t take the hiring as an endorsement that producers on the new streaming version agree the original Tnbc “Sbtb” lead character, played by Mark-Paul Gosselaar, is, indeed, trash.
Ahead of the “Saved by the Bell” reimagining’s Thanksgiving-timed launch, we told new showrunner Tracey Wigfield (“30 Rock”) and Franco Bario, who has been a producer on every iteration of the teen series since its “Good Morning, Miss Bliss” inception, how (not genuinely) offensive we found the title and conceit of Driscoll’s brilliant Funny or Die series.
So, like, is our charming childhood hero, whom in this version has grown up to be the governor of California, actually “trash”?
“Marginally,” Bario said.
“There are a couple of times where I was like, ‘Eh, [Driscoll, who also narrates the web series] might have a...

There is perhaps no person on this earth more knowledgeable about Saved By The Bell than Dashiell Driscoll, the comedy writer who turned a childhood obsession with Bayside High into a viral web series, a writing gig on Peacock’s new take on Saved By The Bell, and a podcast, Zack To The Future, with none other than…...

After more than three decades and dozens of other characters under his belt, Mark-Paul Gosselaar is revisiting the one that first made him a household name: Zack Morris on “Saved by the Bell.”
The veteran actor is not only going to guest star in the Peacock continuation series of the classic NBC Saturday morning live-action kids’ show, but he also teamed up with Dashiell Driscoll, the mind behind the viral sensation “Zack Morris is Trash” (and a writer on the upcoming Peacock series) for the “Zack to the Future” podcast. Each episode of the podcast features the duo discussing a singular episode of the original series, sometimes with a special guest.
It’s not the first time since the show wrapped production in 1994 that Gosselaar stepped back into Zack’s oversized shirts and blond locks (that would be 2009’s guest appearance on “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon”), but the podcast...

Mark-Paul Gosselaar has never seen “Saved by the Bell,” the show he starred on for four seasons, but the actor is finally set to revisit the ’90s classic for a new podcast, “Zack to the Future.”
“For years I have been asked by the dedicated fans of Saved by the Bell to revisit the show,” Gosselaar said in a statement to EW, which first broke the news of the podcast. “I couldn’t wrap my head around an idea that would keep the audience entertained and celebrate the beloved series we created over 30 years ago, mostly because I can’t remember a thing about making it, and I am thrilled to say I have found the answer.”
The new venture comes as Gosselaar is about to revisit the role of Zack Morris for a revival of the series at NBCUniversal’s new streaming service, Peacock.

In Peacock’s Saved by the Bell revival, Zack Morris is trash — and that’s by design.
Because when showrunner Tracey Wigfield (Great News, 30 Rock) put together a writers’ room, she brought in Funny or Die‘s Dashiell Driscoll, the executive producer of Zack Morris Is Trash, a web-series that revisits episodes of the original Sbtb to reveal that Zack has always been “a completely horrible human being.”

As viewers continue to balance increasing television options on shrinking screens, the Emmys have begun to celebrate exemplary content tailor-made for rapid consumption with its short- form categories. Likewise, network executives behind this burgeoning digital content are recognizing the importance of talent, both on and off camera, who can successfully jump from one platform to another.
For AMC’s Lyle Underkoffler, senior VP of new digital business, the key to ensuring talent will resonate both on its long-form programming, like “Fear the Walking Dead,” and on its short-form content like the Emmy-nominated “Fear the Walking Dead: Passage,” is to keep enough of the talent in-house in order to maintain a through-line for its shorter spinoffs and their parent series.
“What we allowed [with “Passage”] is folks on the show to expand their creative capacities to a different location and a different setting that wouldn’t work in the show itself,” Underkoffler says.
