CBS has been reeling fans in with dramas for over 50 years now, and it doesn't look like the network has any plans to stop.
The network really has something for everybody in its repertoire, whether you're looking for someone quirky and spooky like The Twilight Zone or want a procedural with dramatic flair like NCIS.
There are decades of dramas to be accounted for, but we're going to focus on some of the more recent dramas on CBS.
However, that doesn't mean you shouldn't watch CBS classics like Murder, She Wrote, Gunsmoke, Dallas, The Twlight Zone, and more.
When you're not catching up on older CBS classics, here's what we recommend watching for a more modern setting.

Justified creator Graham Yost led the series’ creatives reunion panel at Atx Festival on Saturday afternoon where fans were treated to secrets from the writer’s room. Joining Yost for the special celebration were executive producer and director Michael Dinner and writer/producers Taylor Elmore, Dave Andron, Chris Provenzano, Benjamin Cavell, Ingrid Escajeda, VJ Boyd, and Wendy Calhoun.
The series, following lawman Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant), ran for 6 seasons on FX from 2010 until 2015. Earlier this year, a limited series sequel Justified: City Primeval was announced by the network which is currently three weeks into production.
“One of our biggest secrets was our partner FX. We pitched the show to 8 places and we were really fortunate 6 were really interested so it came down to FX and HBO,” recalled Yost. “HBO is one of my favorite pitching stories because I was pitching my heart out and they were giving me nothing back.

Fox announced that lawyer, journalist and former “The View” co-host Star Jones has been appointed judge of the first-run syndicated series “Divorce Court,” starting in September.
As television’s longest running court show, “Divorce Court” dates back to the late 1950’s, when actors used to reenact actual divorce proceedings. Today, the program features real people and real cases — ranging from divorce court proceedings to other domestic disputes.
Judge Faith Jenkins will continue through the end of Season 23 and Jones will join for Season 24. Jones, a former assistant district attorney in New York and former legal correspondent on NBC’s “Today Show,” “Nightly News” and more, said that she will “offer the parties before ‘Divorce Court,’ as well as viewers, a no-nonsense approach to the law and a decision driven by my proven legal expertise, compassion and empathy, personal experiences and hard-earned common sense.”

The network is in development on Topangaland, a drama co-written by Caan and Seal Team creator Benjamin Cavell, with Caan intended to star. The project hails from Jerry Bruckheimer Television and CBS Studios, where the company is based.
In Topangaland, a laid-back ex-cop (Caan) works for his legendary father’s private detective agency, solving cases that take him from Malibu mansions to Topanga hippie communes to Venice back alleys and everywhere in between — all while navigating a thorny relationship with his dad and the rest of his unconventional family.

The penultimate episode of “The Stand” finally paid off what Stephen King fans knew was coming ever since the project was greenlit: the destruction of Randall Flagg aka the Dark Man’s (Alexander Skarsgård) debaucherous Las Vegas community.
As Randall screams about the traitors in their midst and has Larry (Jovan Adepo) and Ray (Irene Bedard) chained inside a pool that is slowly being filled with water, ominous clouds drift into the Inferno through the hole in the ceiling, followed by lightning rods. These rods strike everything from railings to tapestries on the wall to individual people, including Randall, exposing his true nature. His followers flee, losing faith in him and trampling each other in the process. Eventually the rods hit the nuke on which Trashcan Man (Ezra Miller) rode in, causing the entire building to erupt in a mushroom cloud that can be seen for hundreds of miles.

Showrunner, writer, and producer Benjamin Cavell is thrilled to have Stephen King’s blessing for his 2020 Paramount+ adaptation of “The Stand.” Cavell notes that King is known as being “upfront about his feelings about adaptations of his work. He’s pretty upfront about the ones he doesn’t like and also the ones that he does. It’s lovely to be in that category.” The showrunner delves into the challenges of translating King’s apocalyptic epic from page to screen. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
According to Cavell, King proves to be a difficult author to adapt. “So much of the pleasure of his books is in the access he gives you to the internal lives of his characters,” he explains. Once you move that story to a visual medium, a filmmaker must find a way to make all that inner life external.

“Seal Team” and “Clarice” could soon be on the move. Variety has learned from sources that there are plans taking shape to move the series off of CBS to the ViacomCBS streaming service Paramount Plus.
According to sources, the current plan would be to air a few episodes of the fifth season of “Seal Team” on CBS before moving it over to the streamer, though deals for this are still being worked out. The move would also likely mean a reduced episode count for the series, which ran for 22 episodes its first two seasons, then 20 in Season 3, and 16 in Season 4, with the Season 4 set to wrap up on May 26. “Clarice,” meanwhile would move to Paramount Plus for the entirety of its second season.
Reps for CBS and CBS Studios declined to comment.

In what could be a glimpse of the future of a symbiotic relationship between broadcast networks and their streaming siblings, I hear two high-profile CBS drama series on the bubble, Seal Team, and Clarice, will be moving to Paramount+ next season.
The deals are still being finalized but I hear the David Boreanaz-starring military drama, which is wrapping its fourth season, will kick off its fifth season on CBS next fall and air its first several episodes — likely four — on the broadcast network before migrating to Paramount+. Freshman Clarice‘s second season will stream exclusively on Paramount+. Reps for the streamer and CBS Studios, which produces both series, declined comment.
Already seen with the moves of A.P. Bio from NBC to Peacock, Search Party from TBS to HBO Max and Younger from TV land to Paramount+, broadcast/basic cable series, owned or co-owned by the net’s parent company,...

“It was like someone wrote an encyclopedia for the thing we were making,” notes visual effects supervisor Jake Braver of his work on “The Stand.” The Paramount+ limited series is based on the epic apocalyptic novel of good and evil by Stephen King. Braver was drawn to the project because of “the complexity of the characters and how rich the world was.” Braver used the novel as an essential tool in creating the visual language of “The Stand” (he is also a second unit director and a producer), which encompassed grotesque bodies affected by plague, hellish cityscapes, and one wicked devil. Watch the exclusive video interview above.

The group from Boulder have finally arrived to make a stand against Randall Flagg and Nadine Cross discovers just what she has been chosen for. Will the Dark Man win out or is there one last surprise waiting for him?
If the 1994 mini-series of The Stand had one thing that really stood out it was the handling of the ending. This comes as no surprise as it isn’t the easiest thing to put to screen. With the new version of The Stand, things haven’t gone too good, especially with the quality of the characters, so could the ending of the story be it’s saving grace? If you’ve read the book or seen the 1994 mini-series you’ll know that the ending of The Stand isn’t exactly something that translates well to screen.

It is fair to say that by now we know that The Stand hasn’t really delivered in terms of the characters, but there is still one way it could redeem itself, and that is to improve on the ending when compared to the 1994 mini-series. With promises of a new Stephen King written ending to the show can it actually deliver?
In the aftermath of the Vigil Mother Abigail (Whoopi Goldberg) sends her committee off to face Flagg in New Vegas. On the same journey Nadine (Amber Heard) and Harold (Owen Teague) race to join with the Dark Man (Alexander Skarsgard) and receive their payments.
This is the part of The Stand where things get moving, and while the group may be walking all the way to New Vegas, thankfully this doesn’t slow the episode down.

For fans of The Stand there are certain characters and events that stand out. In episode 6 we finally get to see not only one of the favourite characters from the book finally make his appearance, but also the build up begin to the actual Stand.
Harold (Owen Teague) and Nadine (Amber Heard) put their plan into effect as a vigil is held for Mother Abigail (Whoopi Goldberg) who is still missing. In New Vegas Trashcan Man (Ezra Miller) arrives as Tom (Brad William Henke) makes his escape.
Trashcan Man is one of the most important characters in The Stand after Mother Abigail and Flagg (Alexander Skarsgard), so it’s nice to see him finally make an appearance. With a talented actor like Ezra Miller taking the role there was high expectations for the character.

One of the strongest things about The Stand has always been about the characters. Now we are in the second half of this new adaption of the book it is fair to say that the characters are also the biggest problem the show has. Now we make it to New Vegas does this change?

CBS All Access’ adaptation of The Stand got much more than Stephen King’s behind-the-scenes stamp of approval: King also contributed a brand-new ending to the story, which served as the miniseries’ ninth and final episode on Thursday.
As Stand co-creator Benjamin Cavell revealed at the show’s Television Critics Association press tour panel in December, the new coda was born from King wanting to give Frannie (played here by Odessa Young) another ending, one that allowed her to have her own stand against Randall Flagg after she’s unable to do so while pregnant in the book. Thus, Episode...

Benjamin Cavell and his writing team have been moving with a purpose through the first six hours of their limited series, but in this, the 7th episode, they finally allow the show to catch its breath. Split between competing timelines and locations up till now, “The Stand” has reached its eponymous moment, when the forces of good march against those who serve evil, and it wisely savors the moment.

This article contains spoilers for the sixth episode of The Stand.
In episode 6 of the CBS All Access limited series The Stand, “The Vigil,” several critical things happen: Mother Abigail (Whoopi Goldberg), out on her spiritual quest in the wilderness to communicate with God, has an unexpected confrontation with Randall Flagg (Alexander Skarsgard) instead before she retreats, physically depleted, to the Boulder Free Zone.
Her return, however, coincides with Harold Lauder (Owen Teague) and Nadine Cross (Amber Heard) successfully pulling off their plan to stage a terrorist attack in the Free Zone, detonating a bomb in Abigail’s house that results in the death of Boulder leader and Abigail’s “voice,” the deaf, mute and partially blind Nick Andros (Henry Zaga).
In the previous week’s episode, “Fear and Loathing in New Vegas,” Frannie Goldsmith (Odessa Young) sent Larry Underwood (Jovan Adepo) to break into Harold’s house and see what he could learn,...

More than half a decade ago when Stephen King’s 1979 post-apocalyptic tome “The Stand” was being considered for a big-screen adaptation, visual effects supervisor Jake Braver joined the team to figure out how they would bring to life not only the physical manifestation of the virus that killed 99.4% of the population within the story, but also the dueling communities of Boulder, Colo. and New Vegas.
That feature film never came to be, but the project was pivoted to a nine-part limited series for CBS All Access, with Braver still aboard as visual effects supervisor, as well as a second unit director and producer. Being a part of the process so early on meant he was an essential part of the collaboration on the look of the show, as well as how they would shoot some of the pivotal pieces.

Now that we are reaching the mid-point of The Stand with it’s fourth episode, the focus should be moving onto how people fight against the Flagg. This is exactly what we get, but the problems with the show are starting to become obvious.
With questions beginning to be asked in the Boulder Free Zone, leadership is called for. Randall Flagg (Alexander Skarsgard) uses Nadine (Amber Heard) to influence Harold (Owen Teague), and spies are sent out into the west to find out more about what the Dark Man has planned.
What is starting to trouble me about The Stand in this new format is that the show is meant to be about an America where 99.9% have succumbed to Captain Trips and the world should feel empty. There is a distinct lack of...

Now onto the third episode of The Stand, it is obvious that things have to start happening. With so many characters still to be discovered though, it’s almost expected we’ll be seeing plenty of flashbacks. Now that we are used to mixing the past with current events, is The Stand keeping things interesting?
This episode of The Stand introduces new characters while fleshing out a few that we’ve only seen glimpses of. Nick Andros (Henry Zaga) is a main focus, so that we can be introduced to a character I was looking forward to seeing, Tom Cullen (Brad William Henke). We are also introduct to Glen Bateman (Greg Kinnear). On the darker side of things, Flagg (Alexander Skarsgard) has a message for Mother Abagail (Whoopi Goldberg) and we see look...

This article contains spoilers for episode 4 of The Stand.
The fourth episode of CBS All Access’ miniseries adaptation of Stephen King’s epic novel The Stand, titled “The House of the Dead,” contains two scenes that are surprising to say the least.
Neither one of them turned up in the 1994 ABC miniseries based on King’s post-apocalyptic tale; one of them is taken from — or at least inspired by — the unexpurgated edition of the book that King published in 1990, from which very little was used in the 1994 TV event, while the other is wholly original to this adaptation.
In the first scene, Frannie Goldsmith (Odessa Young) and Harold Lauder (Owen Teague) are riding their motorcycles on their way to Boulder, Colorado in the wake of the Captain Trips pandemic when they come upon a truck blocking the road and what appears at first to be its dead driver.
But the...

It is fair to say that the new version of The Stand still has the shadow of the original mini-series to escape from. This week we get introduced to some of the other characters fans will have been waiting for, but as we get used to the new structure, how well does it stand up that expectations?
In this episode we are introduced to the flashbacks of Larry Underwood (Jovan Adepo) and Lloyd Henried (Nat Wolff). Along with these characters we are also introduced to the more mysterious Nadine Cross (Amber Heard) who fans of The Stand will know, and understand why she is so mysterious.

After spending much of episodes 1 and 2 with important characters such as Stu Redman (James Marsden), Frannie Goldsmith (Odessa Young), Harold Lauder (Owen Teague) and Larry Underwood (Jovan Adepo), the new miniseries version of Stephen King’s The Stand brings in or fills out the backgrounds of several more key personnel in episode 3, titled “Blank Pages.”
This episode of the nine-part CBS All Access limited series introduces the characters of Nick Andros (Brazilian actor Henry Zaga from The New Mutants), Ray Brentner (Irene Bedard) and Tom Cullen (Brad William Henke), all of whom play a major role in King’s tale — and all of whom have received a fairly significant overhaul for the new adaptation.
In King’s book and the 1994 miniseries, Ray is Ralph Brentner, a physically imposing yet good-natured 45-year-old farmer from Oklahoma and a key leader of the Boulder Free Zone.

Last week, the first episode of the brand-new adaptation of Stephen King’s The Stand premiered on CBS All Access, and to mark the occasion, Daily Dead had the opportunity to speak with one of the series’ co-creators, Benjamin Cavell. During our interview, Cavell discussed the decision to restructure the storytelling approach for this new nine-episode limited series event, and the challenges that came with taking on The Stand in the first place. Cavell also chatted about the involvement of Whoopi Goldberg for this iteration of The Stand, and why it was necessary to update not only her character, Mother Abagail, but also Tom Cullen as well, for modern audiences.

Being a big fan of the Mick Garris mini-series I couldn’t help but go into this new version of The Stand ready to compare it with the 1994 version. Times have changed though and so has The Stand, but even with that in mind, does the first episode stand up to the hype around it?
One thing that struck me straight away was the fact there is no slow start to this, in fact The Stand will throw some fans off with where it starts. This is done of course for what seems to be a main reason, much of the first episode features flashbacks for the characters that are being introduced.

Back in January 2020, aka the good old days, HBO released its TV adaptation of Stephen King’s “The Outsider.” Based on a book that is as intrinsically unsound as it is painfully overwritten, Richard Price still managed to make an absorbing, even exciting televised version, with the help of a great cast. Such a remodeling feat deserves its own “Extreme Makeover” episode, but despite the first season’s success, “The Outsider” is already over. HBO chose not to proceed with a second season, and now, as 2020 crawls to the finish line, I can only hope a similar fate awaits “The Stand.” Billed as a limited series but with all the pacing problems and world-building holes of a warm-up season, this King-ly bookend to the year in television is both the wrong kind of timely and another miscalculated rejiggering of the author’s longest novel.
It is also miscast, in nearly every role.

This article contains spoilers for The Stand episode 1 and some aspects of the book.
Though Stephen King may be best known as a prolific creator of bullies, creeps, and monsters (sometimes all in one person), one of his finest characters is firmly on the side of the angels. “Mother” Abigail Freemantle is a key figure in King’s 1978 classic The Stand (and in its 1990 unabridged version as well).
A direct descendant of freed slaves, the 108-year-old Mother Abigail serves as God’s figurehead on Earth following a superflu pandemic that kills off 99% of the population and sets up the remaining survivors for a final confrontation between good and evil. Though Abigail is God’s chosen representative for the forces of good (or so she says), she is also very much a human being, with all the flaws and imperfections inherent therein. As such, Mother Abigail is a fascinating blend of...

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched the series premiere of “The Stand,” streaming now on CBS All Access.
In adapting Stephen King’s 1300-plus page novel “The Stand” for a nine-episode limited series on CBS All Access, showrunner Benjamin Cavell wanted to take a non-linear approach, in part because he didn’t want to spend multiple episodes dealing with the pandemic in the story before getting to the meat of specific characters’ journeys to learn how the Dark Man, a.k.a. Randall Flagg (Alexander Skarsgård), was stirring up chaos out in the west, and to try to put an end to his reign.
But this approach also meant that the majority of central characters in “The Stand” did not get introduced in the first episode — even Randall Flagg himself only gets a quick scene at the end of the episode to show his true face,...

Sometimes opening in media res has some real storytelling value. The goal of just about any story is to get people interested in continuing it. Given that the beginnings of stories are often expository and not particularly exciting, who could forgive a storyteller for wanting to jump right into the thick of the action and then fill in the blanks of what came before
Well, in the case of CBS All Access’s The Stand, I can blame producer/director Josh Boone and showrunner Benjamin Cavell for wanting to jump right in and I will do just that. Stephen King’s classic 1978 novel of the same name is an epic tale and presents all sorts of storytelling challenges to those who would want to adapt it. One of those challenges, however, is not how to begin it.

Stephen King has long had his issues with ending his books, which is the downside of writing without outlines and letting the story travel wherever makes sense in the moment. Beginnings, though? Few writers have ever been stronger at them, and few King novels begin better than his 1978 post-apocalyptic opus The Stand.
The novel opens with a soldier escaping a top-secret military facility as a plague has been unleashed that kills everyone around him. He grabs his wife and daughter, and takes off into the night, unwittingly spreading this superflu...

In terms of post-apocalyptic shows about a viral communicable disease causing the end of the world, CBS All Access’ “The Stand” falls somewhere between Amazon’s “Utopia” and AMC’s still-kicking “The Walking Dead” franchise. Classier than the former, which gleefully used violence as a narrative shortcut, but somehow more glacially paced than the latter, “The Stand” arrives at a coincidental time given how we live now. But this adaptation of one of Stephen King’s most dense, sprawling works never quite reaches the epic scope illustrated so clearly in the 1978 novel.
Instead, showriunner Benjamin Cavell have applied a strangely sanitized sheen to the central threat of elemental evil, resulting in a miniseries that feels simultaneously over-detailed and underdeveloped. That conflicted quality makes the danger faced by the community serving as humanity’s last stand curiously subdued, and “The Stand” struggles to distinguish itself outside of its exceptional casting choices.

The Stand is one of Stephen King’s most epic stories. Over the course of the novel, we see the collapse of civilization as a superflu wipes out 99.4% of the world’s population, the immune survivors to stay alive in an abandoned America, the formation of new societies and a clash for the soul of humanity. This is told through an enormous number of characters and some very complex intertwined plotting.
