A micro-budget and scrappy energy add charm to this quirky sci-fi tale in which unremarkable people watch over their charges
Peter (Scott Haran) is a former child chess prodigy who these days excels at nothing much in particular, except perhaps his ability to blend into the background. A birthday card at his office is handed to him to sign – for his own birthday. None of his colleagues know who he is, and the card is crammed with polite, anodyne messages. But he discovers that there’s one arena in which his anonymity might be a boon rather than a liability: he is recruited into the world of Bystanding, a parallel universe filled with invisible guardian types whose job is to imperceptibly guide or nudge their charges into making better life choices. They are all, in their own ways, as unremarkable as Peter, hence their selection for bystander duty.

Scott Haran and Seann Walsh in The Bystanders
A small film which is making a big noise on the festival circuit this year, and which recently screened as part of Sci Fi London, Gabriel Foster Prior’s The Bystanders is an amiable genre comedy focused on the life of a man recruited into a shadowy organisation which spies on the lives of strangers – and intervenes in small ways to make them happier. It’s an interesting twist on an old science fiction trope which is also, at its core, a story about friendship, as Pete (Scott Haran) bonds with his recruiter, Frank (Seann Walsh) only to realise that they have very different ways of looking at the world. Just prior to that festival screening, Gabriel and I arranged to chat, and he told me about how he found his way into filmmaking.

When you have one of those days in which every little thing goes wrong, do you sometimes feel as if you’re being manipulated, as if there’s some invisible force controlling your life and having a laugh at your expense?
How about when everything goes right?
From Dune author Frank Herbert’s The Dosadi Experiment to recent cinematic works like The Adjustment Bureau, there’s a long history of tales like this. Never have they seemed quite as believable a part of day to day life as this one, however, and rarely have they had as much charm.
Meet Pete (Scott Haran), a sweet natured, quiet man so forgettable that he is inadvertently asked to sign his own birthday card at work. He can’t even throw it in the bin successfully. A one time child chess prodigy whose life since has been nothing but disappointment, he finds his...

The longest running genre fest in the US, the Boston Science Fiction Film Festival (Boston SciFi for short) returned for its 48th annual event in Somerville, Ma last week.
I was only able to attend one of the five days, but I managed to squeeze in four features plus two panels. Here’s what I saw at this year’s Boston Science Fiction Film Festival.
The Warm Season
Boston SciFi hosted the world premiere of The Warm Season, a character-driven sci-fi drama with shades of Starman. As a young girl, Clive (Carie Kawa) encountered Mann (Michael Esparza), an alien in human disguise, who gave her a glowing rock before being captured by government agents. 25 years later in 1992, an escaped Mann returns to Clive’s failing motel to retrieve the “fail-safe” in order to return to his planet. Between the weather patterns and the government closing in, they only have three days to get him home.

Cbbc's Wizards vs Aliens may not return for a fourth series.
The sci-fi series has been placed on hiatus due to budget constrictions, according to Broadcast.
Co-creator Russell T Davies reportedly told the publication that while Wizards vs Aliens has not been axed, there is "not enough money" to fund further episodes at present.
The show follows young wizard Tom Clarke (Scott Haran) and his friend Benny Sherwood (Percelle Ascott) as they battle the alien Nekross.
Two series were originally commissioned in late 2011 and aired in 2012 and 2013, with a third run following in late 2014.
Derek Ritchie - producer on the show - is now working on Doctor Who's ninth series.

3.5 & 3.6 Daughters Of Stone
It’s never easy to follow the departure of a major character, and with Benny having left in the previous episode Daughters Of Stone knows it has some big shoes to fill from the outset. So it’s perhaps not that surprising when Tom’s sometime-girlfriend Katie asks him to come and help out with an apparent haunting at the theatre looked after by her grandad. It’s even less surprising when, exactly ten minutes in, she witnesses Tom performing magic for the first time and the veil drops from her eyes.
As a character to replace Benny, Katie makes complete sense. Manpreet Bambra hasn’t always had a lot to work with on the show, but over three years she’s established...

3.3 & 3.4 The Quantum Effect
So farewell then, Benny Sherwood.
At the series launch event in October, executive producer Phil Ford promised that there would be some shocks this series, and they don’t come much bigger than the departure of one of the series’ two lead actors.
Benny has always been Wizards Vs Aliens’ genius-in-residence, and so it makes sense that sooner or later MIT would decide to snatch him away from King’s Park High to join their ‘Gifted Young People’ programme. Of course, before he’s able to head off to America he and Tom have to deal with an old enemy and a fiendish plot to take over the world…

3.1 The Secret Of Room 12
Cbbc’s hit show Wizards Vs Aliens is back for a third year. In case you’ve never seen it before, there are wizards, and there are aliens, and they’re antagonistic towards one another. Got it? But there’s so much more to it than that. The show was created by the minds behind The Sarah Jane Adventures, Russell T Davies and Phil Ford, and they brought with them all of the excitement, adventure and emotion of that show but with a whole new universe to play in. Davies has left for decidedly more adult pastures, leaving Ford to fly solo. Does it measure up? In a word: absolutely.

Wizards Vs Aliens is to return for a third series.
The Cbbc sci-fi drama - created by Doctor Who writers Russell T Davies and Phil Ford - will resume production next month at Cardiff's Roath Lock Studios.
Scott Haran and Percelle Ascott star in the children's drama as Tom Clarke and Benny Sherwood - a young wizard and his brainy best friend who battle the alien Nekross.
"Cbbc is the home of thrilling and inspiring drama for children and Wizards Vs Aliens is a perfect example of that," said Cheryl Taylor, Controller of Cbbc.
"The series is vivid and brave and our audience loves the portrayal of loyal friendship alongside exciting alien battles and stunning wizardry.
"Children want to talk about Tom, Benny and the Nekross and we know they'll be delighted to hear a third series is being conjured up by the talented team in Wales."

Starting today on Cbbc, James reports back from the second series launch of Russell T Davies and Phil Ford's Wizards Vs Aliens...
Despite its undoubted behind-the-scenes pedigree, it would be fair to suggest that Russell T Davies and Phil Ford’s Wizards vs Aliens struggled to find its feet during its maiden series on Cbbc last year.
Weighed down by a far heavier expositional burden than the team’s previous effort, The Sarah Jane Adventures, ever had to contend with, it wasn’t until the final weeks of its first run that WvA truly seemed to find its feet and deliver satisfying and compelling stories in its own right.
However, despite the show finally managing to deliver on its obvious potential the question remained: would WvA’s second season be able to maintain that progress? While it’s too early to deliver a definitive answer,...

Popular Cbbc program Wizards vs. Aliens will make its U.S. debut on The Hub network on June 1. Scott Haran stars in the lead role as 16-year-old Tom Clark, a teenager in a family of wizards. So from the show's title, you can pretty much guess what he'll be doing in the 12-episode series. Percelle Ascott plays his best friend, Benny Sherwood. Benny's parents on the show are played by British TV vets Don Gilet and Nina Sosanya. The Hub will first air Wizards vs. Aliens' two-part opener at 7Pm on June 1; subsequent episodes will follow every Saturday at 7:30Pm.
