Interesting Ethology
Director: Vasiliy Sigarev // Writers: Andrey Ilenkov, Vasiliy Sigarev
Still struggling to break free from the confines of the festival circuit, up and coming Russian director Vasiliy Sigarev (pictured above) has premiered his first two films to critical acclaim. His 2009 debut Wolfy played at Karlovy Vary and his excellent 2012 sophomore film, Living premiered at Rotterdam. Also a noted writer, Sigarev’s first two films are pronounced slices of miserablism, which may explain the lack of international distribution, which is unfortunate. His latest, Interesting Ethology, is apparently a comedy. Plot details are limited, but apparently a cut was shown to attract distributors at the Russian Pavilion back at Cannes 2014. Several cast members have notable credits, such as Yuriy Kutsenko, who appeared in two Timur Bekmambetov films, while Yuliya Snigir was featured in A Good Day to Die Hard (2013).

#10. Living – Dir. Vasili Sigarev (Russia)
Premiering at the 2012 Rotterdam Film Festival, this sophomore effort from Vasili Sigarev is, of course, ironically titled, rather making itself one of those “glass half empty” pictures. It’s a certifiable downer, interweaving three separate stories of miserablism in modern day Russia, and at its best, is distressing to sit through. But I’ll be damned if I wouldn’t watch anything I could get my hands on from this director, creating some of the most memorable film sequences I happened to see this year.
#9. The Place Beyond the Pines – Dir. Derek Cianfrance (Us)
Premiering at the Toronto Film Fest 2012, Derek Cianfrance casts Ryan Gosling once more in his followup to Blue Valentine. Gosling, here a motorcycle stunt driver (sound familiar?) turns bank robber…and then the picture becomes something else completely.
#8. Everybody In Our Family – Dir. Radu Jude (Romania)

Moscow -- For a second year running, Kinotavr, Russia's main film festival, ended with a surprise victory by a first-time director.
As the 20th edition came to a close Sunday in the Black Sea resort of Sochi, the festival jury gave the top award to "Volchok" (Spinning Top), the debut feature by Vasili Sigarev, who was previously known as a playwright. The drama about a complicated relationship between mother and daughter in a Russian provincial town also collected the screenplay prize.
Last year's winner, "Shultes" by Bakur Bakuradze, was also the director's debut feature. Overall, the festival was regarded as a victory for the younger generation of local filmmakers, who took practically all the main prizes.
Ivan Vyrypayev picked up the best director's award for his sophomore feature, "Kislorod" (Oxygen), a sophisticated musical youth drama loosely based on the Ten Commandments, which was also awarded for best music.
