Prime Video might be pulling back from Southeast Asian originals, but Netflix remains is doubling down on originals in the region.
The streamer has unveiled several titles from Indonesia and Thailand, and a Chinese-language slate for 2024.
One of the bigger titles on the streamer’s Indonesian slate is sci-fi series Nightmares and Daydreams, which marks Netflix’s first collaboration with Joko Anwar.
Anwar’s horror films are often well-received at the box office, with Satan’s Slaves and its sequel both in the top 10 list for highest-grossing films in the country.
Director Timo Tjahjanto will return with action film The Shadow Strays, after making comedy action flick The Big 4 in 2022, which became the second most-watched non-English film on the streamer. The official remake of the 2011 Belgian film Hasta La Vista, Herwin Novianto’s Why Do You Love Me, takes the story to Indonesia and has a perfect cast for this heartwarming film, which may seem like it was made to titillate but in fact speaks about a deeper topic of ableism and expressing one’s sexuality. The story revolves around three friends in their early twenties, one of whom has a brain tumor, and they wish to visit a red-light area where the trio could pop their cherries and live life to the fullest. The movie feels like a breath of fresh air, and under the guise of being a raunchy comedy, it comes up with something truly surprising. The background score and the performances make this a decent remake with its own flavor and message at the end.

If someone suicidal had a second chance to step away from their impending actions, would they change their mind? Fireworks or Kembang Api begs the same question. Adapted from the Japanese film 3ft Ball And Soul (2017), Fireworks follows four people who find each other in a group chat. The group chat is essentially a suicide club, and the movie begins when the four of them decide to meet up to commit group suicide. The movie is called Fireworks because the method of suicide is by detonating a large firework “bomb” created by one of the four participants. Of course, there’s an underlying message, but without giving any spoilers, we can look at it this way: The majority of the film takes place in a claustrophobic, confined place where the protagonists gather to commit their grand act. It creates a sense of urgency and makes one question the motives of all the characters.
