Billed as a psychological horror film, Machination opens with a brief shot of Maria floating in the ocean before launching into a credit sequence filled with images of hypodermic needles, microbes, hypodermic needles and infection rates. Yes, it’s yet another pandemic-driven microbudget genre effort. This one totally improvised and shot for a little over six thousand dollars
As the film proper begins Maria takes a bus home to her sunny, spacious apartment, quickly strips down to her underwear and washes herself before donning a fresh pair of gloves to put her clothes in the washing machine and then wash her shoes and the furniture near the door. A little excessive maybe? That takes up almost the first ten minutes of this hour-long film. And apart from the...

Anyone who’s ever resorted to sex in an attempt to heal a fractured relationship will find something to relate to in married filmmakers Sarah Portelli and Ivan Malekin’s anthology-style drama set in a variety of international locales. Depicting the emotional fissures among four couples (well, at least three-and-a-half), the micro-budgeted In Corpore suffers at times from its improvised dialogue (no screenwriter is credited) and its explicit sex scenes that, while certainly pertaining to the characters and storylines, border on exploitative. But the film, available on demand and in digital formats, features sufficient emotional truth to make it worthwhile viewing ...

The 2nd annual South Texas Underground Film Festival, running Oct. 3-6 in Corpus Christi, Texas, is a massive celebration of international alternative cinema, including plenty from Texas filmmakers, of course.
The fest opened on the 3rd with the drop-dead hilarious comedy Pictures of Superheroes by Austin filmmaker Don Swaynos.
But, there’s still plenty more to see throughout the jam-packed weekend wherein films screen from morning until, well, early into the next morning.
The film that’s absolutely not to be missed is the screening on the 6th at 10:30 a.m. of Savage Witches, the amazing celebration of the art of filmmaking by British directors Daniel Fawcett & Clara Pais. A colorful spectacle of multiple filmmaking styles, Savage Witches is a real joy to experience.
Also to be on the lookout for are on the 5th at 11:00 a.m. is the new rockin’ documentary Mondo Fuzz: Twilight of the...

To celebrate their 13th anniversary this year, the Melbourne Underground Film Festival is going green!
No, they’re not out to save the kookaburra or anything. Instead, they’re hosting a special tribute to the New Irish Low Budget Cinema, featuring two films by acclaimed filmmaker Ivan Kavanagh, plus work by Colin Downey, Gary Kenneally and Gerard Lough.
Muff will host a repeat screening of Kavanagh’s celebrated thriller Tin Can Man — it previously screened at Muff in 2008 — as well as his latest film, The Fading Light. The three other Irish films screening all fall into the horror/thriller genres, from Downey’s The Looking Glass to Kenneally’s Stephen King adaptation The Boogeyman and Lough’s trilogy-ending The Shaken 3. And, in addition, the entire fest kicks off with the opening night Irish thriller Charlie Casanova by Terry McMahon.
But don’t think Muff is all Irish all the time this year,...
