Actor Wentworth Miller has a new project in the works, and it might surprise you.
The Prison Break star is in negotiations with Universal to adapt the novel The Story of Edgar Sawtelle. If hired, Miller would be the second name attached to the screenplay – William Broyles Jr. (Apollo 13) wrote a first draft. The choice is interesting when you consider some of the heavy hitters backing the film, the likes of which include Oprah Winfrey – who cited Edgar Sawtelle in her book club – and Kate Forte of Harpo Films, as well as Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman under their banner, Playtone. [THR]
Written by David Wroblewski, the book follows the title character, a mute Midwestern farm boy who’s forced to flee into the wilderness after the murder of his father. He comes of age in the wild, fighting for his survival and that of the three dogs that followed him,...

Sometimes getting through the grueling marathon that is the development process in Hollywood takes time, and in the case of the adaptation of David Wroblewski’s “The Story of Edgar Sawtelle,” it’s been two and a half years since the project was first announced with the combined might of Tom Hanks and Oprah Winfrey behind it. But THR is reporting that “Prison Break” star Wentworth Miller is in negotiations to be the latest writer to take a crack at the adaptation. Miller has been making waves in the screenwriting world after his spec script “Stoker” -- which was written under the pseudonym Ted Foulke -- landed on the Black List and attracted a bunch of talented folks including famed South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook, who will be making his English-language directorial debut with the film next year. The actor/screenwriter will, if talks are successful, be taking over screenwriting duties from frequent Hanks collaborator.

Almost exactly four years ago both my mom and I spent a week of vacation reading the book The Story of Edgar Sawtelle, David Wroblewski's gripping, Hamlet-inspired novel about a boy growing up on a dog-breeding farm in Wisconsin, who suspects his uncle of having killed his father. It was a great read, but when I caught the news a few months later that Oprah and Tom Hanks were collaborating to adapt it into a movie, I was stunned. The movie is narrated entirely by the main character, who is a mute-- except for a few chapters where it's narrated by his loyal dog. How on earth were they going to make that an actual film? There hasn't been any news on the Sawtelle option basically since the Oprah and Hanks news broke in early 2009, so I thought it was safe to assume they had given up. Alas, not...

I'm taking over the meme today for the vacationing Ed. I'll try not to buckle under this responsibility and valor. Onward!
First, the bad news: St. Kylie Minogue had an affair in 1994 with her Street Fighter costar Jean-Claude Van Damme. Not that we blame her.
I'm not done geeking out about The Price is Right's search for a male model -- a "Barker's Brawny," if you will. The winner will be decided through a five-episode webseries where viewers can vote for their favorite candidate. The selected stud only gets to model dinette sets and jetskis for a week, but I'm hoping he'll be as excited to be a part of the show as unforgettable contestant Steven Raff was.
Kind of hard to believe that the 2012 Olympics were the most watched U.S. TV event in Nielsen history. Who knew that America cared about Matthew Mitcham's Speedo this much? I'm actually crying.

It’s Hamlet with dogs. No, no, stay with me here. David Wroblewski‘s Oprah Book Club novel, “The Story of Edgar Sawtelle,” centers on young Edgar, born mute but able to communicate to both his parents and their specially bred dogs by way of their own unique sign language. Despite his disability, Edgar has a very special place in the Sawtelles’ business of dog breeding (the dogs that are at the heart of the book are a fictional breed that are marked by both their born-in intelligence and their Sawtelle-issued training). Yet, all of that is thrown into utter turmoil when his beloved father, Gar, dies mysteriously (on the heels of his bad-news brother, Claude, returning to the farm) – and Claude soon takes up with Edgar’s mother, despite Edgar’s suspicions that he somehow caused his father’s death. A series of even more wrenching events force Edgar and three dogs (including his beloved Almondine...

It doesn’t get much better than having Oprah and Tom Hanks producing your work. Oprah is so huge – she has her own network, magazine, syndicated talk show, book club, and can be referred to by her first name and you all know who I am talking about. Well, one such lucky person is author of “The Story of Edgar Sawtelle,” David Wroblewski. If it was not enough that the book was selected as an Oprah’s Book Club selection, now the book will see a film adaptation. Some people have all the luck.

So says Variety. David Wroblewski’s debut novel, based on Shakespeare’s Hamlet was a selection of the Oprah Book Club back in 2008. It will now be brought to the big screen by Oprah Winfrey/Harpo Studios and Tom Hanks, who will both co-produce the project.
Edgar Sawtelle is about a mute boy who runs away from home after the murder of his dog-breeding father and other subsequent misfortunes. He travels through the wilderness of Wisconsin and Canada followed by three pups from a litter he’d been raising himself until he decides to return home and face the man he suspects is the killer.
I haven’t read the book, and really have no interest in doing so. Although, at least it’s not another one of those negro miserablism tales Oprah seems to love so much.

The publishing industry is among those saddened by the news that Oprah Winfrey's talk show will end in 2011. As an unabashed book lover, Winfrey helped boost sales of countless reads—even those written by relatively unknown authors (see: Elizabeth Gilbert, David Wroblewski, Uwem Akpan, etc.) After all, it's no secret that a single appearance on Winfrey's show could directly lead an author right onto the best-seller list. "Listen, anytime we lose an outlet as significant as Oprah’s, it's not a plus," says Random House spokesperson Stuart Applebaum. "She had the potential to move that sales needle like nobody else on the air.
