When Peter Alexander opens Saturday’s broadcast of “Today,” he will find himself opposite a new host — and a potential sparring partner.
Laura Jarrett, a relatively new arrival to NBC News, is taking over as his co-anchor on the weekend edition of the long-running morning program now that Kristen Welker is moving to host “Meet The Press.” As Alexander discovered during a rehearsal session on Thursday, he will have to be prepared.

Updated, Saturday April 9, 9:37 Am Pt: CBS News confirmed that Norah O’Donnell has re-signed to CBS Evening News, which she has anchored since 2019.
The new contract will keep her in place past the 2024 election, according to a source close to the situation.
Previously: Norah O’Donnell has extended her contract at CBS News through the 2024 election and afterward.
O’Donnell will stay in the anchor desk on CBS Evening News for at least three more years, a source close to the situation confirmed to Deadline on Friday.
The news comes after reports that CBS News under co-president Neeraj Khemlani explored options for the broadcast. Khemlani told Deadline in January that “we have no current plans to change what we are doing. We’re leaning into our strength.” Puck first reported the news, but a CBS News spokesperson declined to comment. O’Donnell’s publicist, Cindi Berger, emailed a two word response,...

Neeraj Khemlani and Wendy McMahon last year were named presidents and co-heads of a combined CBS News and Stations, and they have made a number of changes to bolster streaming across the divisions.

When Nate Burleson joins Gayle King and Tony Dokoupil as co-host of CBS’s morning show next month, the program will have a new look, theme and name: CBS Mornings.
The changes, to launch on Sept. 7, will connect all of the morning shows together with some of the elements of its long running CBS Sunday Morning, which has long topped its time period on weekends, including the use of the sun logo and trumpet music, Gottfried Reiche’s Abblasen.
The first hour of the weekday broadcast will still be devoted to hard news and conversation, while the second hour will feature expanded feature reporting, a central part of the Sunday show, as well as live interviews, arts and culture pieces from Anthony Mason, who recently was co-host, and Vlad Duthiers with the What to Watch segment.

CBS News wants to spread some of its venerable newsmagazine “Sunday Morning” to other days of the week.
Starting September 7, the entire CBS morning schedule will be treated as a larger franchise, with weekdays and Saturdays featuring some of the in-depth and longform features for which the Sunday show — a TV-news institution — is best known.
The weekday program, which features Gayle King, Tony Dokoupil and new co-host Nate Burleson, will be retitled “CBS Mornings,” and will be part of a lineup that includes “CBS Saturday Morning” and “CBS Sunday Morning.” Once known as “CBS This Morning,” the show will continue to highlight the breaking news of the day and the interactions of its hosts, but place new emphasis on longform stories in its second hour. The Saturday and Sunday shows, hosted by Jeff Glor, Dana Jacobson and Michelle Miller and by Jane Pauley, respectively, will continue with the formats to which their viewers are accustomed.

Jay Shaylor, executive producer of “CBS Evening News With Norah O’Donnell,” is leaving his role less than two years after taking it.
“Jay Shaylor is leaving the company. We thank him for his contributions to the broadcast and for helping develop it into the impactful program it is today,” a CBS News representative told TheWrap on Friday. “The ‘Evening News’ is in terrific hands with a stellar team of journalists, led by Elizabeth Turner and Alturo Rhymes, as we determine new executive leadership.”
The statement went on, “With Norah O’Donnell as the anchor and managing editor, the ‘Evening News’ is in its best competitive position in years. We are extremely proud of the broadcast and what this team will be able to accomplish as we move forward.”
Shaylor joined the “Evening News” team in 2019 after moving over to CBS from CNN, where he was executive producer of “The Situation Room With Wolf Blitzer.

Susan Zirinsky is preparing to step down from her role at CBS News president, according to an individual with knowledge of the company.
Zirinsky has helmed the news organization for two years.
A representative for CBS declined to comment on Zirinsky’s plans. According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, she will soon ink a production deal with the network’s parent company, ViacomCBS Inc.
There has been speculation about her possible departure, which only grew following reports last week that Kimberly Godwin will soon depart her role as CBS News’ executive vice president to become the president of ABC News.
Their exits would leave two top roles at CBS News vacant.
Zirinsky, a beloved figure at CBS News who started out as a production clerk in 1972, faced her fair share of fires to put out when she took over the network’s news division following the ouster of David Rhodes.

A year after the start of the Covid-19 shutdowns, network evening news viewership fell to levels resembling pre-pandemic habits.
Viewership for World News Tonight with David Muir, NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt and CBS Evening News with Norah O’Donnell was down for the week of March 8 compared to the same period a year earlier, according to Nielsen.
For the week, World News Tonight has 8.86 million viewers, NBC Nightly News had 7.29 million and CBS Evening News had 5.34 million. For the same period a year earlier, World News Tonight averaged 9.92 million, NBC Nightly News was at 8.46 million and CBS Evening News posted 6.07 million. Those are declines of 11%, 14% and 12% respectively.
Last week, all of the networks marked the one-year anniversary of the Covid-19 shutdowns, which led to mass closures, a cratering economy and widespread stay-at-home orders. Those extraordinary 2020 news cycles also triggered a resurgence in evening news ratings. The nightly newscasts often...

This Saturday-morning news show is supposed to look like the ones that precede it Monday through Friday. It doesn’t.
Co-anchor Jeff Glor isn’t wearing a tie and his colleagues, Michelle Miller and Dana Jacobson, often join him in a weekend outing that seems cut from different cloth than the weekday version to which it is tied. Brian Applegate, executive producer of CBS This Morning: Saturday,” sees no need to stitch everything together.
“What I really want to do is continue down the path of identifying this show as a unique broadcast that is unlike anything else at CBS News,’ says Applegate, in a recent interview. As NBC News’ newly minted chief White House correspondents, Kristen Welker and Peter Alexander have the sort of job that rarely ends neatly for the week on Friday at 5 p.m. And yet, every Saturday morning, this duo — Alexander jokingly refers to the team as “joint chiefs” — has even more to do.
Alexander and Welker are taking morning TV to (for the news industry) an exotic frontier, anchoring the Saturday broadcast of NBC’s “Today” from NBC News’ new facility in Washington, D.C. News junkies often develop a tight relationship with a favorite TV anchor or cable-news outlet. Mosheh Oinounou hopes some of them will turn instead to a “news concierge.”
The former executive producer of “CBS Evening News” is among the many journalists discovering they don’t need a traditional media apparatus — say a TV-network control room or a giant printing press — to serve up information and analysis. Some reporters are taking to independent newsletters via companies like Substack. Oinounou has found a perch for himself on Instagram, where he helps everyone from random followers to a handful of celebrities make sense of current events. Under the right circumstances, NBC might want to consider changing the name of its morning franchise from “Today” to “Nearly All Day.”
NBC News has considered the prospect of creating a fifth hour of “Today” on weekdays, according to two people familiar with the matter, the latest nod to the growing spotlight many broadcast networks are giving to news programming across their schedules as more consumers watch scripted programs at times of their own choosing.

CBS Evening News has now made the full transition to Norah O’Donnell as anchor: After her debut in July, the newscast made a move to its permanent location earlier this week, distinguishing itself as the only network evening news broadcast from Washington.

Norah O’Donnell took the helm of CBS’s “Evening News” in July, but so far, she has not righted the sinking flagship program.

In the advertiser-coveted demographic of viewers from 25 to 54, her broadcast got 971,000 viewers — a 25% drop from Glor’s year-ago numbers.

The final Nielsen numbers for the just-completed 2018-2019 network news season are in, and ABC’s World News Tonight with David Muir again finished first in total viewers and NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt beat its rivals in key demographics.
But viewership was flat or down across the board, even as the networks seized on the numbers for bragging rights.
ABC News touted that it won the season in total viewers for a third year in a row, and that it increased its margin over NBC Nightly News by 37%. Norah O’Donnell’s debut as anchor of CBS Evening News drew 5.61 million total viewers Monday, on par with the newscast’s numbers in the recently ended second quarter and year-over-year but lower in viewers and the key news demo compared with this season’s averages.
The broadcast, featuring a sit-down with Amazon’s Jeff Bezos about his space ambitions and reporting on the backlash over President Donald Trump’s controversial tweets, attracted 929,000 viewers in the key 25-54 demo, according to Nielsen. That was down 24% from a year ago and 22% compared with the 2019 year-to-date average.
While up 2% in viewers from the non-debut week before, Monday’s viewership was off 6% compared with the 2019 average.
Monday’s numbers hewed more closely to the broadcast’s averages for the just-ended second quarter: 5.47M viewers and 1.047M in the news demo.
Year to date, CBS Evening News averages 5.96 million total viewers and 1.18M demo viewers.

Norah O’Donnell is the new anchor of “CBS Evening News,” though she’s not off to a particularly hot start.
Her July 15, 2019 debut drew 1.221 million viewers ages 25-54 — the key demographic for news programming — which was down 24% versus the same night last year. O’Donnell’s total-viewer decline was much less dramatic, down just 1%, which was also less of a decline than ABC and NBC experienced year to year.
Compared with the show’s 2019-to-date ratings, the Jeff Glor days, O’Donnell’s summer kickoff was down 22% in the demo and 6% among total viewers. Versus Glor’s final week, O’Donnell’s first show dropped 19% in the key demo. The two versions were steady in total viewers.

Updated with video: Norah O’Donnell ended her first CBS Evening News broadcast as anchor with a promise for the future and a nod to the past. Quoting Edward R. Murrow’s famous “wires and lights in a box” speech, O’Donnell pledged to use the “instrument” of television “well and with integrity.”
In May, O’Donnell, formerly a co-host of CBS This Morning, was chosen by CBS News chief Susan Zirinsky to replace Jeff Glor as anchor of the CBS Evening News in an attempt to boost ratings.
The regime change was not addressed directly on her debut newscast tonight, though the half-hour was loaded with references to CBS News’ legacy of covering the space race and moon mission. (This week marks the 50th anniversary of the moon landing.)
At sign-off, O’Donnell thanked viewers for watching, then said, “There’s a great legacy here at CBS News of the finest journalists.

Norah O’Donnell said Tuesday she wouldn’t be the new “CBS Evening News” anchor if not for the network’s recent upheaval.
O’Donnell, who takes over on July 15 as the anchor of the network’s evening newscast, spoke at TheWrap’s Power Women Breakfast NYC about how CBS has changed its corporate culture since the ouster of CEO Les Moonves, “CBS This Morning” co-anchor Charlie Rose and others.
When TheWrap Editor-in-Chief Sharon Waxman asked directly if she would have gotten the gig without that upheaval, she responded, “I don’t think so.”
She added: “I would not have taken this job if Susan Zirinsky were not president,” referring to CBS News’ new leader, who replaced David Rhodes in January amid ratings woes as well as #MeToo issues.

Norah O’Donnell is going all in with space for her anchoring debut on the CBS Evening News next week, interviewing Caroline Kennedy and Amazon’s Jeff Bezos to mark the 50th anniversary month of man’s first steps on the moon.
The space focus makes sense: Among journalists, CBS’ Walter Cronkite is more closely associated with the moon flights than any other broadcaster. In a sense, O’Donnell’s space-themed inaugural turn as the network’s new anchor ties a new era of the CBS Evening News to its historic legacy.
In May, O’Donnell, formerly a co-host of CBS This Morning, was named by the recently installed CBS News chief Susan Zirinsky as successor to Jeff Glor as anchor of the CBS Evening News in an attempt to boost ratings.

“CBS Evening News With Norah O’Donnell” will premiere from New York on July 15, and move to its permanent residence in Washington D.C. sometime this fall, the network announced Sunday.
The nightly flagship news program will also stream in its entirety at 10 p.m. Et on Cbsn, CBS News’ 24/7 streaming news service.
“There is a real hunger for an independent source of news, and that starts with Norah O’Donnell,” said Susan Zirinsky, CBS News’ president and senior executive producer.
“She has traveled the world reporting the most important stories of our time and has covered the White House, the Pentagon and Capitol Hill. She is an exceptional and experienced journalist who cares deeply about the issues that affect American families. Norah is the right person at the right time.”

In less than a month, Norah O’Donnell will start delivering the headlines at “CBS Evening News” – and, most likely, start generating a few of her own.
CBS News plans to launch a re-tooled “CBS Evening News” anchored by O’Donnell on July 15th, part of the network’s ambitious plans to overhaul its morning and evening standbys and get more competitive with rivals. She will be just the second woman at CBS News to lead the venerable program solo and will play an instrumental role in a big bet by the network, which plans to move O’Donnell and the program to Washington, D.C. from New York City at some point in the fall.
The network offered a peek at how it will position O’Donnell’s tenure behind the evening-news desk Sunday evening with a promo that aired during “60 Minutes.”
