If, by chance, you’ve never heard of Australian genre director Sean Byrne, you need to remedy that fact right away. While far from a household name, Byrne directed two of the best horror movies of the last twenty years – The Loved Ones in 2009 and The Devil’s Candy in 2015. The Loved Ones, in particular, is a gem, with star Robin McLeavy’s performance as high school stalker Lola, being one of the most memorable horror baddies in recent memory.
And now, it looks like Byrne is finally directing another film, with Variety revealing that he’s set to direct the horror flick Dangerous Animals, which stars Hassie Harrison (the Yellowstone girl who caused a major bunkhouse feud a few seasons back), Jai Courtney, and Josh Heuston.
Here’s what Variety has to say about the project:
Written by Nick Lepard, “Dangerous Animals” exhibits the same play with genre tropes of “The Devil’s Candy,...

On Jan. 19, 2001, Stacy Peralta’s skateboarding documentary Dogtown and Z-Boys lit up the Sundance Film Festival, going on to earn multiple honors in Park City and, later, a feature film treatment, Lords of Dogtown. The Hollywood Reporter’s original review is below:
Where the debris meets the sea, that’s the tight scope on Dogtown and Z-Boys. It’s a wild ride with eight boarders from Venice Beach, Calif., that was a deserved co-winner of the Audience Award for documentaries at the Sundance Film Festival. Director Stacy Peralta also deservedly garnered the director honor in the documentary category.
Carved through the waves and asphalt of Venice, Dogtown follows the daring exploits of a tight-‘n’-tough band of wayward teens, outsiders who assaulted the softblue world of ’70s surfing. Hardened from single-parent homes and charged with pent-up energies, they took to the waves with a take-no-prisoners style.

Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers for the Season 2 finale of “Julia,” now streaming on Max.
“Julia” might put a strong focus on the food, but it’s a show that also has a lot more on its mind. The Max comedy series takes on a wide range of 1960s-era social issues, including feminism, homosexuality, civil rights and the anti-war movement.
“Julia” wraps up its second season Thursday with an eventful finale that includes filming an ambitious crustacean segment — in the “Lobster a l’Americaine” episode. After cooking and hitting farmer’s markets in the south of France with her friend and co-author Simone Beck (Isabella Rossellini), the Childs — played by Sarah Lancashire and David Hyde Pierce — spend time in Paris, then return to Boston where they must confront — and foil — an FBI investigation into Wgbh’s “subversive” activities, with help from station employees like producer Alice (Brittany Bradford).

More anti-lgbtq bills have been introduced in 2023 than any other year in the history of the United States. Although estimates of just how many vary widely, the Movement Advancement Project (Map), an independent non-profit think tank, provided data to Rolling Stone projecting that more than 700 bills have been put forward in 2023 that seek to strip rights and protections from the LGBTQ community. More than 75 of those bills ultimately passed, including limitations on trans youth athletes who wish to compete in school sports, and the first-ever laws restricting public performances of drag.

Montana Judge Mike Menahan rejected a request from Democratic State Rep. Zooey Zephyr to overturn a ban against her presence on the state’s House floor and legislative facilities. Menahan wrote in his decision Tuesday that Zephyr’s request would “require this Court to interfere with legislative authority in a manner that exceeds this Court’s authority.”
Zephyr, with support from the American Civil Liberties Union, filed the request for relief Monday. The state’s Republican-controlled House voted to bar Zephyr, the first openly transgender lawmaker elected to the Montana legislature,...

Transgender Montana state Rep. Zooey Zephyr is fighting back after Republicans voted to bar her from the House floor as punishment for speaking out against a bill that would ban gender affirming care for minors. On Monday, attorneys from the American Civil Liberties Union representing Zephyr filed a lawsuit against House Speaker Matt Regier and state House Sergeant-at-Arms Bradley Murfitt, arguing that Zephyr’s exile violated her First Amendment rights and those of her constituents.

The forces of tyranny can come in many different forms across many different genres. Sometimes it’s a corrupt government ruling over a strange tower, known by name by those who strive for advancement and favor. Sometimes it’s a cruel government that monitors every waking moment of its citizens, the purpose of its rules hidden and unknown. And sometimes it’s the very gods themselves.
