Republican lawmakers in the House have recently been skirting their legislative duties to make unholy pilgrimages to Donald Trump’s criminal trial in New York. They’re now using whatever time they do spend legislating to silence references to the former president’s many ongoing legal issues on the House floor.
On Tuesday, House Republicans voted to strike down comments made by Rep. Jim McGovern (D-Mass.) during a floor debate. What was McGovern’s great parliamentary offense? Pointing out that the former president is facing a myriad of criminal indictments,...

Following the killing of seven World Central Kitchen workers by an Israeli strike while delivering food to Gaza earlier this week, House Democrats wrote a letter on Friday to U.S. President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken urging them to halt the the transfer of weapons to Israel until a full investigation into the airstrike was completed.
The letter, spearheaded by Reps. Mark Pocan, Jim McGovern and Jan Schakowsky, was signed by 40 lawmakers including Nancy Pelosi and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

As House Republicans make public their intent to move forward with an impeachment inquiry against President Joe Biden, they’re struggling to convince the public — and even themselves — that they’ll be able to obtain the evidence of the high crimes and misdemeanors necessary to impeach a president.
On Tuesday, House Speaker Mike Johnson published an op-ed in USA Today explaining his reasoning for formalizing the investigation into Biden, which has so far skirted the usual requirement of a floor vote to officially open an impeachment inquiry.

Update: The debt ceiling deal narrowly passed the House Rules Committee on Tuesday, clearing a hurdle that threaten to stall the bill before it reached the floor.
Rep. Ralph Norman (R-Sc) and Rep. Chip Roy (R-tx) joined with the committee’s four Democrats in voting against advancing the bill. But seven Republicans voted for it.
Rep. Tom Cole (R-Ok), the Rules Committee chairman, reminded his colleagues that even though the bill left members with misgivings, “that is to be expected in divided government.”
Rep. Jim McGovern (D-ma), the ranking member, said that the bill goes after “vulnerable people,” possible only because the GOP was “weaponizing the debt ceiling” in ways that “will haunt us.”
Stock indexes were mixed, with the S&P 500 up slightly, along with Nasdaq. The Dow was off slightly, finishing down 0.15% to close at 33,042.78. The Rules Committee meeting was still ongoing at the close of trading.

Fox News has spent the bulk of the year deflecting blame for the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol from former President Trump, while placing it onto left-wing activists the network’s hosts claim without evidence instigated the insurrection. The propaganda push was exposed for what it is on Monday night, when Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) read urgent texts some of network’s biggest stars sent Mark Meadows on Jan. 6, begging the White House chief of staff to get the president to make a national address imploring his supporters to go home.

HBO has set a fall premiere for Four Hours At The Capitol, a documentary film chronicling the January 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. The film, which hails from HBO Documentary Films in association with the BBC, will debut Wednesday, October 20 at 9 pm Et/Pt on HBO and available for streaming on HBO Max.
Executive produced by Emmy winner Dan Reed (Leaving Neverland) and directed by Jamie Roberts, Four Days At The Capitol is described as a harrowing and immersive chronicle of the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, when thousands of American citizens from across the country gathered in Washington D.C. to protest the results of the 2020 presidential election, many with the intent of disrupting the certification of Joe Biden’s presidency.
Through never-before-seen footage and vivid first-hand accounts, the film details how the violence quickly escalated, leaving Capitol security forces outnumbered and overwhelmed, and highlights the high-stakes standoff between police and rioters.

Last year, the House of Representatives gave its members the option to vote by proxy by designating another member to cast a vote in their absence if the member’s absence was due to the “ongoing public health crisis.” But Rep. Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.) voted by proxy on Friday so he could also appear at the far-right Afpac, the right-wing extremist answer to Cpac. And a number of Republicans joined Gosar in playing fast and loose with the rules of this new option. More than a dozen GOP members of...

Updated, 6:02 Pm: Rep. Liz Cheney (R-wy) survived an effort to oust her from House Republican leadership, a move that would have been punishment for her vote to impeach Donald Trump.
The vote was 145 to 61 among the House Republican conference to retain Cheney, according to the Associated Press.
A vote to oust Cheney would have signaled the durability of Trump’s support even after he has been out of office. As it was, House Republicans already were facing criticism for taking a vote on Cheney’s future while not taking action against Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Previously: Marjorie Taylor Greene is getting far greater attention in the media than her actual power as a freshman congresswoman in the minority party, filling a void that may have otherwise gone to Donald Trump.
Much was already known about Greene when she sought a Georgia House seat last year, but recent stories have revealed more of her past beliefs,...

Following the unprecedented rioting by supporters of Donald Trump in the U.S. Capitol, a growing number of people, both Democrats and Republicans, are calling for the president to be removed from office.
According to White House correspondent April D. Ryan, the push is happening even at the leadership level, as she reported that “Congressional leaders are in the undisclosed location and focusing on the 25th Amendment to get @realDonaldTrump out of office!”
And Washington Post reporter Dave Weigel reported that Massachusetts Democrat Katherine Clark, assistant Speaker of the House and the fourth-ranking congressional Democrat, called Trump “a traitor to our country and our Constitution” who “must be removed from office and prevented from further endangering our country and our people.”
But they’re far from alone. Among notable examples from the Democratic side of the spectrum, Rep. Ilhan Omar says she is drafting new articles of impeachment. Her colleague in “the Squad,...

On day eight of the government shutdown, with no end in sight, Republicans have shifted from blaming Democrats in general to accusing incoming House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of prolonging the closure, even though Trump said just a few weeks ago that he would “own” the shutdown.
During a meeting with Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer in the Oval Office on December 11th, Trump said, “I am proud to shut down the government over border security… I will take the mantle of shutting down, and I’m going to...

[[tmz:video id="0_6rlerlcj"]] President Trump was totally successful in bringing both sides of the table together in a burning desire ... to get the hell out of the room Tuesday night ... at least according to 2 members of Congress. We got Sen. Cory Booker and Rep. Jim McGovern on Capitol Hill -- shortly after the State of the Union -- and they addressed Trump's plan to deliver a non-divisive speech. Of course, they're both Democrats, so we weren't expecting glowing reviews,...
