Malachy McCourt, the Irish-American actor, raconteur and author best known to TV audiences for his long-running role as Kevin the bartender on ABC’s soap Ryan’s Hope, died today in Manhattan after battling a heart condition and cancer. He was 92.
His death was announced by his wife Diana McCourt to The New York Times.
The brother of Pulitzer Prize-winning Angela’s Ashes memoirist Frank McCourt, Malachy McCourt left an indelible mark on New York City’s Irish American community. As the owner of the quintessential 1950s Irish pub Malachy’s on Third Avenue in Manhattan – McCourt would often call it the city’s first singles bar, since he welcomed unaccompanied women to the establishment – the Brooklyn native became one of the city’s great story-tellers, regaling patrons from longshoremen to the actor Richard Harris with blarney, rugby talk and biographical anecdotes.

It's been an emotional journey for Kate (Sarah Chalke) and Tully (Katherine Heigl), but will their friendship withstand more hurdles?
Netflix has unveiled the official trailer for the back half of Firefly Lane Season 2, which will bring the dramedy to an end for good.
The series has followed Kate and Tully's relationship over 30 years, and just like real-life, it hasn't been easy sailing for either of them.
The first half of the second season found the pair ending their years-long friendship, but fans were left with plenty of cliffhangers.
One of those cliffhangers involved Kate's ex-husband, Johnny Ryan (Ben Lawson), seemingly getting married to Tully.
"That's the thing about big life changes; you don't get to choose when they happen," Johnny Ryan shared in the new trailer. "You just have to hold on tight to the people you love and make your way through it."

Can a true friendship survive the test of time? The season two, part two, Firefly Lane trailer shows Katherine Heigl and Sarah Chalke trying to find that answer in the series’ final episodes.
The Maggie Friedman-created Netflix drama, based on the bestselling novel by Kristin Hannah, follows a more than 30-year friendship between two women — Tully Hart (Heigl), a nationally syndicated talk show host, and Kate Mularkey, a housewife — through love, sacrifice, jealousy, pain and happiness. The series goes through the trials they have faced through different stages of life, with the trailer for the final part showing a new jump in time.
Season two, part one, saw Tully and Kate ending their longtime friendship. The finale then shocked audiences after being left on several cliffhangers, including Kate’s cancer diagnosis, Tully moving and a huge flash-forward showing Kate’s ex-husband, Johnny Ryan (Ben Lawson), dressed up on his wedding day,...

When “Firefly Lane” co-executive producer and author of the novel Kristin Hannah met with the TV adaptation’s creator Maggie Friedman, she gave her two pointers on the core of the story, which chronicles the ever-evolving friendship between quirky, methodical Kate Mularkey (Sarah Chalke) and bold, ambitious Tallulah ‘Tully’ Hart.
“The single most important thing was that this was a story that highlighted almost a female soulmate, your very best friend who is your best friend from the time you’re 13, for all of your life,” the author said in a recent interview with TheWrap. “We don’t sort of see enough of that representation on TV. I do think that the series has done an amazing job of creating these two women who, as different as they are, you absolutely believe that they love each other, and when the chips are down, they’re going to be there for each other.

Netflix’s new trailer for Firefly Lane season two part one shows there’s tension between Tully and Kate, but it sort of balances that out by revealing more about their lifelong friendship. Part one of the final season premieres on December 2, 2022, with season two part two arriving in 2023.
Season one of the drama, based on the bestselling novel by Kristin Hannah, debuted in February 2021 and starred Katherine Heigl and Sarah Chalke as lifelong best friends who stuck by each other’s side through thick and thin. Heigl and Chalke are back as Tully and Kate, respectively, for the second season. They’re joined by returning cast members Ben Lawson as Johnny Ryan, Ali Skovbye as young Tully, Roan Curtis as young Kate, Yael Yurman as Marah, and Beau Garrett as Cloud.

When Owen Kline was 14 years old, he wrote cartoonist Johnny Ryan a fan letter. “I didn’t know who he was,” Ryan told IndieWire. “I just thought it was amusing that a child was sending me fan mail.” Featuring characters like Loady McGee and stories like “The Whorehouse of Dr. Moreau,” Ryan’s “Angry Youth Comix” were not exactly age-appropriate for Kline. But the introduction proved fruitful. Years later, the now 30-year-old Kline went to Ryan when he was working on his first feature, the A24-distributed “Funny Pages.”
“Funny Pages” centers on a New Jersey teen obsessed, like Kline was and clearly still is, with underground comics. After his art teacher and mentor dies in a shockingly horrific accident, Robert (Daniel Zolghadri) decides to quit school with the idea of devoting himself to his craft.

San Francisco, Aug 22 (Ians) Cloud major Oracle has been hit by a privacy class-action lawsuit in the US, claiming that the company’s “worldwide surveillance machine” has amassed detailed dossiers on nearly 5 billion people, the Irish Council for Civil Liberties (Iccl) claimed on Monday.
The lawsuit, filed in the Northern District of California, accused the company and its adtech and advertising subsidiaries of “violating the privacy of the majority of the people on Earth”.
Oracle is an “important part of the tracking and data industry” and generates 42.4 billion in annual revenue.
Dr Johnny Ryan, Senior Fellow of the Iccl, is one of three class representatives in a new lawsuit filled against Oracle.
“Oracle has violated the privacy of billions of people across the globe. This is a Fortune 500 company on a dangerous mission to track where every person in the world goes, and what they do. We are taking this...

Warning: Major spoilers for Sherwood episodes 1 to 6.
Like The Responder before it, Sherwood is a gripping BBC crime drama about much more than manhunts and police barrier tape. Loosely inspired by real events, it’s the story of two murders in a Nottinghamshire ex-mining town that reopen old wounds in a fractured community where conflict was manipulated by political policing during the 1984-1985 miners’ strike.
With an unimprovable cast including Lesley Manville, Alun Armstrong, David Morrissey and countless other talents, Sherwood hits all the marks of a whodunit thriller with characters that examine the nature of division and decades-old rifts. Its first series begins in grief and ends with an exhortation for communities not to allow their differences to be exploited by others for political gain.
A clear contender for British TV drama of the year, let’s dive into how Sherwood’s moving, revelatory ending unfurled. Spoilers ahead.

Tully is a well-known talk show host while Kate decides to go back to work while going through a divorce from Johnny Ryan, who happens to be Tully’s television producer. Kristin Hannah is a spectacular author - I'd even say she's my favorite due to the sheer number of her novels I've read and recommended to others. Like any good writer, she makes you feel like you're right there in the story, seeing everything she's painting out in words in vivid color rather than black and white on a page, and her 2008 novel Firefly Lane is no different. This story captured my heart and brought me along for the wild ride that is the life of "TullyandKate." I couldn't put the book down, even when my laughter turned into tears and back to laughter again. I felt genuinely attached to each and every one of the characters and the role they played in bringing the story together.
Sadly, all of these wonderful aspects of the book did not come together on screen for me, and my feelings while watching the...

With Wednesday’s release of Netflix’s Firefly Lane, we got to know future BFFs Tully Hart and Kate Mularkey — played as adults by Katherine Heigl and Sarah Chalke, respectively — just as they got to know one another. The former was portrayed as always having been gorgeous and outgoing, a star waiting to be born; the latter, bookish and reserved (as telegraphed by her ever-present glasses — TV shorthand for mousy). Yet they forged a relationship that lasted decades, at least until… dun dun Dun!

The return of classic-style Warner Bros. animation with “Looney Tunes Cartoons” for this week’s launch of HBO Max took some persuading at the studio: Would kids under 10 get the slapstick humor and find the legendary Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Tweety Bird, and the rest of the gang relatable? That’s when showrunner Pete Browngardt (“Uncle Grandpa”) suggested group testing some of the old cartoons for families to see how they played.
“There was a concern about the familiarity of the characters and how violent they could be,” Browngardt said. “And they worked perfectly. They’re perfect capsules of comedy.” Among the cartoons they tested were “The Great Piggy Bank Robbery” (1946) with Daffy at his loony best, and “Easter Yeggs” (1947) with Bugs and Elmer Fudd. Unfortunately, the gag with a revolver as a pacifier didn’t go over well given the preponderance of elementary school shootings, so they...

We are delighted to share an exclusive poster for Klown Forever, featuring art by Johnny Ryan. Some -- Ok, probably almost everybody -- might consider the poster to be Nsfw (Not Safe For Work), which is why we've parked it below (scroll down, but beware of the adult nature of the imagery). Speaking solely for myself, I believe this is a brilliant poster that captures the essence of one scene in particular while also picturing the essence of a very improper and raucous and very, very funny comedy that I loved when I got to see it at Fantastic Fest last year. Here's the synopsis: Klown Forever follows estranged best friends Casper Christensen and Frank Hvam as they travel to the States seeking fame, fortune...

Earlier this year, you may have heard about the notorious film Nekromantik hitting Blu-Ray via Cult Epics. We have just received word on the details of the release including artwork.
Press Release
This controversial horror film shocked the world in 1987, when it was banned in Germany, censored in Japan, and simultaneously became a huge underground hit in the Us (now long out of print).
Nekromantik tells the story of Rob (Daktari Lorenz), who works at a street-cleaning agency, visiting roadside accidents to clean up the scene. Incidentally, Rob collects the body parts and shares them with his girlfriend, Betty (Beatrice M.)
When Rob presents a complete corpse taken out of a swamp, their undying love reaches its peak, but soon after Betty gets a more liking towards the corpse and leaves Rob, which takes him to the sick end of his destruction.

Even if you aren’t familiar with the film Nekromantik, I’m willing to bet that if you actually “grew up at the video store” like most of you claim, you’ll have seen the VHS cover sitting on the shelf, and probably contemplated taking it home with you a dozen times. Personally, I couldn’t turn it down, so I have seen the film several times. Cult Epics are finally bringing Nekromantik to Blu-ray on October 7th, also releasing a new, 2-disc Special Edition DVD. Check out the press release below, and click here to pre-order a copy for yourself.

Desert Fury
Written by A.I. Bezzerides and Robert Rossen
Directed by Lewis Allen
USA, 1947
Perception plays a spectacularly large role in how people behave and process information. Everything one does or chooses to do is at least partly a function of one’s perceived reality. Sometimes, one believes to be doing the right thing whereas they are doing the wrong thing and vice versa. It is but one of the many aspects to human cognition that makes life that much more complicated. It stands to reason that perception can influence how one watches a movie and accepts its terms. These nebulous ideas greatly influence many aspects of the 1947 romance thriller Desert Fury, from what the characters believe to be doing to how the viewer ultimately accepts or rejects the film as a whole.

Henry & Glenn Forever & Ever #2
Various Artists
(I Will Destroy You/Microcosm)
It seems as though the saga of Henry and Glenn has sparked somewhat of an indie cottage industry. There are Henry and Glenn t-shirts, stickers and posters commemorating the comics union of these two punk rock icons. The series has even inspired imitators like gross out pro, Johnny Ryan, who threw his whip into the ring with a comic in Vice titled “Mark and Gary Forever” featuring Devo’s Mark Mothersbaugh and the synth fiend Gary Numan staring as a not so ambiguously gay duo. For the uninitiated, Henry & Glenn Forever & Ever is the further adventures in a comics compilation depicting Henry Rollins (Black Flag, Rollins Band) and Glenn Danzig (Misfits, Samhain, Danzig) as gay lovers. Before you roll your eyes (which you are certainly justified in doing), it should be noted that these comics take the joke outside...

Film Review: The Favor
A melodramatic story line is given an admirable but ultimately detrimental low-key treatment in "The Favor".
This tale of a lonely middle-age man becoming a foster father to the son of the woman who broke his heart 25 years ago is told in such a muted fashion that it barely registers.
The Seventh Art Releasing film's central character is Lawrence (Tony-winning stage veteran Frank Wood), who lives a solitary existence in suburban New Jersey. A photographer who divides his time between doing portraits of pets and shooting mug shots at the local police station, his sole company is his dog.
One day he receives a phone call out of the blue from his former high-school girlfriend Caroline (Paige Turco), now a recently divorced single mother to a rebellious teenage son, Johnny Ryan Donowho). They soon go on a promising date, but soon afterward she dies in a freak accident.
Since Johnny's sole living relative is his wheelchair-bound, Alzheimer's suffering grandfather, Lawrence manages to assume guardianship. The two quickly come into conflict, as the decent, long-suffering bachelor struggles to break down Johnny's emotional barriers.
Director-screenwriter Eva Aridjis seems so intent on avoiding histrionics that almost nothing makes an impact. Lawrence's reactions, both to the sudden reappearance of his old flame and then her immediate demise, are barely discernible, and his motivations, other than obvious loneliness, remain unexplored. Although Wood attempts to compensate for the emotional gaps with his soulful facial expressions, he's ultimately unable to compensate for the filmmaker's too laid-back approach.
