This post contains spoilers for "Red Planet."
With the exception of "Total Recall" and "The Martian," films centered around our dusty neighboring planet have often fallen flat. Even among the duds, few have flopped as spectacularly as 2000's "Red Planet" starring Val Kilmer. With a production budget of 80 million, the unrealized blockbuster, co-produced by the Australian studio Village Roadshow Pictures and distributed by Warner Bros., brought in no more than 33 million from the worldwide box office, resulting in a significant loss.
A common theory behind the underperformance of "Red Planet" is that it lost out to its twin film "Mission to Mars" from director Brian De Palma that premiered eight months prior in March 2000. Neither film, however, was a financial success, and "Mission to Mars," with 106 million worldwide, barely made a profit on its own high 90 million budget. Audiences of "Mission to Mars" must have felt they'd seen enough of...

Rendering its victims motionless, sleep paralysis is a seriously scary occurrence all on its own, but throw in a sinister supernatural entity such as the one in the new movie Dead Awake, and you really have a reason to add some more coffee grounds to your daily brew. Ahead of its May 12th release, Dead Awake is teased in an unsettling new clip featuring a staircase crawl that might remind you of The Exorcist or The Grudge.
"From the creator of the iconic Final Destination franchise comes the paralyzing thriller Dead Awake. Kate Bowman (Jocelin Donahue) is a straight-laced social worker who finds herself plunged into a world of supernatural terror while investigating a series of mysterious deaths. Each victim suffered from a chilling condition known as sleep paralysis, a nightmarish assault on the senses that immobilizes its victims as they dream. As a terrifying entity begins to haunt Kate’s friends and loved ones,...

Sleep paralysis can be scary on its own, but when you get it in the bathtub, it can also be lethal, as evidenced in a new clip from Dead Awake.

Taking a page from the playbook of Springwood teens haunted by Freddy Krueger, a patient in a new clip from Dead Awake is avoiding sleep, but he's managed to avoid slumber for over a year, and the psychological toll it's taken is unsettling to say the least.

"The real world is not about happy endings. It's about taking the life you have, and fighting like hell to keep it."
Ok, you got us. That clip is from Daredevil Season 2, but it demonstrates just how persuasive Jeri Hogarth can be. From her starring role in Jessica Jones to her subsequent cameos across the Netflix Marvel universe, Moss has taken the gender-swapped character and run with it, crafting the no-nonsense lawyer who isn't afraid to dive into the legal world of vigilantes and superheroes.

This doesn't bode well for occupied Los Angeles, but certainly bodes well for sci-fi fans. Colony has been renewed by USA for a 13-episode second season, the network announced on Thursday. The series, starring Josh Holloway and Sarah Wayne Callies as Will and Katie Bowman, premiered on January 14 and tells the story of a family struggling to stay together while the human race is under occupation by an alien force only known as the Hosts. Created by Carlton Cuse (Lost) and Ryan Condal (Hercules), Colony has averaged 3.4 million live+3 day viewers in its first few weeks. "Carlton and Ryan have successfully delivered a story that tests the strengths and weaknesses of a society in duress, and the...

On the surface, "Colony" doesn't look all that much like sci-fi — and that's kind of the point. The USA Network drama created by Carlton Cuse and Ryan Condal tells the story of a family living in an occupied Los Angeles. Who (or what) has Los Angeles under its control? That's not as important a question as how this new world order affects ordinary lives — even though as we find out pretty quickly, Will and Katie Bowman (played by Josh Holloway and Sarah Wayne Callies, two of the hottest parents on television since Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell of "The Americans") are far from ordinary. Colony, Season 1
Created by Ryan Condal and Carlton Cuse
Premieres Thursday, January 14th at 10 pm Et on USA Network
One episode watched for review
Writer and Producer Carlton Cuse has had a very prolific career, being involved with two series, The Strain and Bates Motel, that are currently on the air. One of the most famous shows he’s been involved in, however, is the ABC series Lost, which ended in 2010. Unwilling to rest with working on only two shows, Cuse is set to reunite with Lost star Josh Holloway on his new series on USA, Colony, which Cuse co-created with Ryan Condal. Unfortunately, despite the pedigree, the show itself shows little promise, as its hamstrung by generic plotlines and poorly developed characters.
One of the key issues with Colony is that its world-building provides nothing compelling, instead only raising numerous questions that the show seemingly has no interest in answering.

If you didn’t know that USA's science-fiction drama Colony comes from one of the co-producers of Lost, the first few minutes would clue you in. We’re dropped in medias res into Los Angeles on what looks like an ordinary, low-stakes day, joining an upper-middle-class family that lives in the kind of house inhabited by any number of TV clans. But we soon realize that something is off. The camera lingers on a photograph of a young boy who’s not eating at the kitchen table with the rest of the family — a son who’s revealed to have gone missing. They’re known as the Sullivans, but their real names are Will and Katie Bowman (Lost’s Josh Holloway and Sarah Wayne Callies of The Walking Dead). Then Will leaves. Why? Do you really want to know? If the answer is no, read no further; the chief pleasure...
