Despite a fairly predictable story, first-time director Steven Pierce makes some interesting tweaks to the formula with a final act that confounds expectations
Like every zombie-themed movie ever, this low-budget American feature directed by debutant Steven Pierce (co-written by Pierce and James Allerdyce) has a subtext; this one so close to the surface it’s barely sub, about schisms that divide communities. Quite often, the factions in zombie stories cleave along class lines or ethnicity. But Herd mixes the formula up in a number of interesting ways; for starters, by casting as the heroines lesbian spouses Jamie (Ellen Adair) and Alex (Mitzi Akaha), city dwellers on a camping trip trying to heal marital wounds after the loss of a child.
Thus the women are already semi-outsiders in rural Missouri where they’re visiting, although it’s near where Jamie grew up. Not that this puts her more at ease, given...

"Sometimes we have to do... things we don't want." Dark Sky Films + Framework Prod. have revealed the official trailer for the indie horror film Herd, made by filmmaker Steven Pierce. We posted a trailer for this a few months ago before its world premiere at FrightFest earlier this year. When a woman trying to outrun her past ends up trapped between a zombie outbreak (spread by a virus called "Heps") and warring militia groups, she is caught in a world where some fight for survival but others fight for control. This stars Corbin Bernsen, Timothy V. Murphy, Ellen Adair, Mitzi Akaha, and Jeremy Holm. This looks like it gets super gnarly in the second half with all the people in town turning against each other, not to mention the zombies. The film has been receiving positive reviews. Dark Sky adds: "Steven Pierce has crafted a film that brilliantly ratchets up...

Director Patrick Lussier and writer Todd Farmer have re-teamed for Trick, which stars Omar Epps in the main role of Detective Mike Denver, a man obsessed with a serial killer that has remained one step ahead of him for years.
An elusive serial killer, “Trick,” returns each Halloween to kill innocent victims. Detective Mike Denver (Omar Epps) faced Trick once before, shooting him off a five-storey building. When Trick’s body disappears into the town river, everyone thinks he’s dead. Only Denver believes he’s still alive. But now, as strange occurrences disrupt the peace of the town, nobody can deny that Trick has returned. Obsessed with catching the murderer, Denver will do whatever it takes to stop Trick claiming their next victim.
Trick also stars Ellen Adair as Sheriff Lisa Jayne, the sheriff in the small town of Benton who has always considered Detective Denver as her mentor.

Hey,"Bull" fans. Unfortunately, we have some very bad news for you guys in this article. For some reason, CBS will not be airing the new episode 8 of this current season 4 tonight, November 11, 2019. The good news is that this delay will only be for this week. You guys can expect to see the new episode 8 air next Monday night, November 18, 2019 at approximately 9 pm central standard time on CBS of course. So, definitely be sure to mark down that very important date on your TV show calendars. So, what is CBS airing tonight instead of "Bull?" That is a very good question, and we do have an answer for it. According to the TV guide listings, CBS is actually airing an episode of "Bull." It just won't be a new episode. They're airing a dreaded rerun or repeat episode. The repeat episode they are airing is the 16th episode of last season 3. This episode is titled,...

To be perfectly honest, I was already half in the bag for Patrick Lussier’s Trick when it was first announced: I’m a big fan of many of Lussier’s directorial efforts (I’ll forever stand by my belief that Dracula 2000 is way more fun than it ever gets credit for), an even bigger fan of his editorial output, and have enjoyed his collaborative efforts with Todd Farmer over the last decade (who he also worked with on Trick) as well. Plus, with a cast that boasts the likes of Omar Epps, Tom Atkins, and Jamie Kennedy, and the fact that it's set around the Halloween season, I was more than primed for some slasher-ific fun with Trick, and as a whole, I was not disappointed.

It’s October and the Halloween season is here! That means people are going to be watching lots of scary movies to help get into the spirit of the season. Rlje Films has a new Halloween-themed slasher movie coming out called Trick, and they’ve released a trailer for it.
The film comes from Todd Farmer and Patrick Lussier (Drive Angry and My Bloody Valentine), and this movie involves a Halloween night mass murderer from the past who comes back to murder people again the following Halloween. It’s kinda like the Halloween franchise, but with different circumstances and a different mask. Here’s the synopsis:
On Halloween night in 2015, Patrick "Trick" Weaver massacred his classmates at a costume party. After being arrested, he managed to escape police custody, but not before being shot five times by Detective Mike Denver. Everyone believes Trick must be dead, but when a masked killer reappears the following Halloween,...

Canadian and American filmmaker Patrick Lussier's next film is titled Trick. This film fan knows Lussier from his competent storytelling and shooting of Vampires II & III, which this writer saw for the first time, recently. Both films are amazingly well done - for an indie production. With Trick, Lussier is sticking with horror as killer Patrick "Trick" Weaver returns, after a tragedy several years earlier. Now, Trick is returning every Halloween, to finish what he started. Trick was co-written by Todd Farmer. Farmer and Lussier have worked together on My Bloody Valentine 3D (2009) and Drive Angry (Bloody Disgusting). And, their latest stars: Omar Epps (Dracula 2000), Ellen Adair, Kristina Reyes, Jamie Kennedy and Tom Atkins. The first poster and trailer, for the film, are hosted here. The first trailer shows Trick, behind a pumpkin mask. Everyone is playing a game. But, Trick is here to play-for-keeps. The bodies pile...

"People want a monster that they can fear." We're just about to enter October, which means it's the month of horror leading up to Halloween! Rlje Films has debuted an official trailer for the indie horror thriller titled Trick, the latest from writer / director duo Todd Farmer & Patrick Lussier (both of Drive Angry and My Bloody Valentine). Trick is the latest Halloween night horror, this one also involving a massacre from the past that comes to haunt people again. Omar Epps plays a no-nonsense detective trying to track down the serial killer named "Trick" who is terrorizing a small town. Also starring Ellen Adair, Kristina Reyes, Jamie Kennedy, Vanessa Aspillaga, and Tom Atkins. The main pumpkin mask seems to be inspired a bit by Dougherty's Trick 'r Treat, though this movie looks way more brutal and intensely violent. Watch out. Here's the first trailer (+ poster) for Patrick Lussier's Trick, from...

Director Patrick Lussier and writer Todd Farmer are re-teaming for Trick, which stars Omar Epps in the main role of Detective Mike Denver, a man obsessed with a serial killer that has remained one step ahead of him for years.
Trick centers on an elusive serial killer, who descends upon a small town annually, bringing terror and death. He is responsible for gruesome murders year after year, each in different jurisdictions and seemingly unrelated. No one believes this could be the same killer. Detective Denver has faced Trick once before – he shot and killed him. Or so everyone keeps telling him. However, Denver knows Trick is out there and he’s coming back for revenge.

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from “The Sinner” Season 2, Episode 7, “Part VII” and theories about the upcoming finale.]
Just like last year, “The Sinner” spent its penultimate episode of the season in a lengthy flashback to reveal answers to many of the questions that had been spun out from the beginning. “Part VII” revealed that not only was Marin (Hannah Gross) still alive, but that she was indirectly responsible for the mess everybody is currently in, including her son Julian (Elisha Henig) poisoning two Mosswood members with tea brewed with Jimsonweed.
The revelations actually begin a few days prior to Julian’s fateful act. While Marin has left her son behind to be raised at Mosswood, in the intervening years she tried and often failed to deal with some of her issues, whether it meant taking drugs, going into rehab, or finding religion. When she had finally gotten what peace she can, she returns to Mosswood not to do “the work,...

‘The Sinner’ Boss Breaks Down Vera’s Daring Ploy, the Hooded Figure, and the Dangers of Drinking Tea
[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from “The Sinner” Season 2, Episode 6, “Part VI.”]
Serving tea appears to be a family tradition on “The Sinner” this season. Julian Walker (Elisha Henig) gave his poisonous brew to two former Mosswood acolytes who supposedly kidnapped him, and on Wednesday’s episode, it’s revealed that his mother Vera (Carrie Coon) also served tea to the commune leader known as The Beacon (Brennan Brown) as an apology.
Of course, having set a precedent for toxic tea in the premiere, “The Sinner” has taught its viewers to view any steeped hot drink with suspicion. If this is the case, that means Vera assassinated the Beacon and took his place. But only the viewers know about the tea having seen it in the flashback. In her confession to Harry Ambrose (Bill Pullman), she merely says, “He was unhappy for a long time; one day he left us.”

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from “The Sinner” Season 2, Episode 1, “Part I.”]
Det. Harry Ambrose’s arcane knowledge about plants has paid off in his latest case. In the Season 2 premiere of USA’s “The Sinner,” a young boy has killed his parents at a motel by giving them tea laced with… something. It doesn’t take long for Ambrose (Bill Pullman) to figure out what the 13-year-old boy used.
Jimsonweed (datura stramonium), a.k.a. devil’s snare, is a member of the deadly nightshade family. IndieWire spoke to showrunner Derek Simonds about the premiere, including why the show settled on using this particular plant and method for murder.
“We did a lot of research. What would be a deadly poison that occurs in the natural world in upstate New York? There were a few options but Jimsonweed proved to be the deadliest,” he said. “What we liked… is that it’s a very common shrub.
