Mark Kermode on modern film criticism, critics of his own work, Michael Bay, Jason Statham and male oil wrestling.
The last time we spoke to Mark Kermode, he'd just launched his book about the state of movie criticism, Hatchet Job. Since then, he's embarked on a nationwide tour with the book, and undertaken dozens of Q&As with audiences about it.
And that, as Hatchet Job continues to thrive in paperback, is where we started...
I spoke to you just as you launched Hatchet Job, and in your words, since then you've "toured the arse off it". You've done Q&As with the people who've read your book, and who you wrote it for.
So what have you learned about what audiences feel regarding film critics, and where they sit in the world?
I think the most important thing was when I started writing it, I was, as you know,...

Syfy's Legion spin-off, Dominion, heads into pilot production aided by new cast member Anthony Head...
You only need remember 1992's Buffy the Vampire Slayer to recognise that often the best TV spin-offs can come from less-than critically adored sources. That's good news for Syfy's new project, Dominion, taking inspiration as it does from 2010's Paul Bettany-starring Legion, a film that wasn't a bit hit with reviewers ("Celestial tosh" was Nigel Floyd's verdict, "a very silly, crummily scripted mess" was Tim Robey's).
Dominion features characters based on those from Legion to tell "an epic supernatural action drama set twenty-five years after the events of the movie and picking up in the aftermath of a catastrophic war between an army of angels and mankind". Some overlap with Supernatural territory there, one feels.
The pilot is about to begin shooting this month, and if all goes to plan,...

'Insidious: Chapter 2' Family Review: 5 Things Every Parent Should Know Know About the Horror Sequel
"Insidious Chapter 2" is the follow-up to director James Wan's hugely popular 2011 horror hit "Insidious," which he made for only $1.5 million and went on to gross nearly $55 million. Wan returned to direct the sequel, and like the original it chronicles the lives of the Lamberts, a family with an unusual connection to the paranormal realm - called the Further - thanks to a father and son's abilities to communicate with the dead. The movie manages to expand the story to make room for future installments, and despite mixed reviews it's likely this sequel will rake in a big opening, so expect teens (and even some tweens) to ask to go this weekends.
There's no question that this is a horror movie, but if you're considering letting your tween see "Insidious Chapter 2," keep reading.
1. What did you think of the original? As the title makes clear, "Insidious Chapter 2" is the follow-up to the enormously successful low-budget,...

With his latest film, Trap For Cinderella, out in UK cinemas now, director Iain Softley talks about film locations, Hackers and more...
Iain Softley is a filmmaker who’s hard to categorise. His career is pretty fascinating, because it’s almost impossible to predict what kind of film he’ll make next. His first film was a drama about the early career of the Beatles, which he followed with an unconventional action movie about computer hackers. Then he made a period drama. Then a weird sci-fi movie set in a mental hospital. Then a spooky horror film, and followed it up with a fantasy movie for kids. How many directors can you name who’ve made a series of films that diverse?
His new film, Trap For Cinderella, is yet another different kind of movie, and maybe one of the most difficult to categorise...
