The major cliché of today’s theater criticism is that even a slightly dystopian play must be reviewed through the discolored prism of Donald Trump’s presidency. Finally, I have to jump on that bandwagon. John Leguizamo gives us a one-man show that fully warrants unkind references to the 45th president of the United States, as well as to Rep. Steve King and Sen. Ted Cruz. (More of-the-moment targets include Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey.) It’s called “Latin History for Morons,” which opened Wednesday at Broadway’s Studio 54 after a successful run at the Public Theater earlier this year.

Kudos to the bookers at CNN New Day for quickly getting Rep. Steve King (R- Ia) to call in and address President Donald Trump‘s reported deal with Democratic leadership over Daca and apparent pivot from building a border wall to the more nuanced improvement of “border security.” Rep. King was one of the earliest and has […]...

Neil Gorsuch had a tense exchange with a Democratic senator over his college dissertation and views on maternity leave on Tuesday.
During his Senate confirmation hearing for a Supreme Court seat, the Colorado judge appeared frustrated when pressed by Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin on the views of his dissertation advisor.
The Illinois senator noted that Oxford law professor John Finnis once wrote that European countries were facing “cultural decay” from “reverse colonization” caused by immigration, comparing the comment to a recent controversial tweet by Iowa Rep. Steve King.

John Oliver yesterday tackled the subject of Obamacare on Last Week Tonight — saying the Gop’s solutions put forward to replace it were flawed. Opening the segment, he joked that The Affordable Care Act was “also known as Obamacare, or in emails from your uncle as ‘Fwd: Fwd: Fwd: The Communist takeover of American values!!!’.” He told how the Act had been “the bane of Republicans’ existence”, with footage shown of Gop Rep. Steve King saying that if Obamacare was ever implemented and enforced “we will never recover from it”. But Oliver then laid out how grim the health insurance system was before the...read more...

A bill introduced in Congress this week that would establish right-to-work laws throughout the country was blasted today by the leaders of the WGA East, which said its intent is to "wipe out" unions. Right-to-work laws, which exist in about half the states, allow workers the right not to belong to unions – or to pay union dues – at companies covered by union contracts. A federal law offered by Rep. Steve King (R-ny) and Joe Wilson (R-sc) would extend those laws in all 50…...

Just when you think you've seen - and heard - it all from Donald Trump, he comes out with another surprise. This week, it was his head-turning admission during a speech in North Carolina that he regrets some of things he's said on the 2016 presidential campaign trail in "the of heat of debate." It was a rare acknowledgement by Trump that he'd made a mistake (he told People just last fall that saying "sorry" is something he "never likes to do") and many politicos are attributing it to the quick work of his new campaign manager, Republican pollster and campaign veteran Kellyanne Conway,...

Tuesday night, Stephen Colbert took a look at some recent comments by Rep. Steve King (R-ia) about the Arizona bill that would have allowed businesses to refuse service to gays and lesbians on the basis of religious freedom, until Republican Governor Jan Brewer decided to veto it. Since King's main objection to protecting the rights of homosexuality is that their "self-professed behavior" cannot be “independently verified,” Colbert decided King might as well be the one verify it.

Unlike many other members of his party, Rep. Steve King (R-ia) is still upset that Arizona's Republican governor Jan Brewer vetoed the SB1062 bill that would have allowed businesses to deny services gays and lesbians on the basis of religious belief. On Sunday, he went on a local Des Moines station to explain why he was in favor of the controversial bill.

“What Spader’s Reddington demonstrates is a dark, glittering intelligence and that makes him a fascinating character,” wrote my pal and fellow columnist John Ostrander here on ComicMix yesterday, discussing James Spader’s work as the protagonist (antagonist?) on NBC’s The Blacklist (Mondays at 10 Pm Edt USA).
I read John’s column after reading A House Divided: Extremism And The Lessons Of History by Sean Wilentz and its accompanying article, Inside The Gop’s Suicide Machine by Tom Dickinson in the National Affairs section of the current Rolling Stone Magazine.
Over the last decade, my imagination has sometimes taken me to sinister places when I have thought about the future of the United States of America. Since George W. Bush became President through the manipulation of the vote in Florida and the engineering of his election to office by the Supreme Court, it has seemed not unbelievable to me that a cabal,...

A day after claiming that climate change was more "a religion than a science," Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) reasserted that many scientists overreact when discussing the consequences of global warming.
“There’s bad and there’s good and we need to look at the bad and the good and be objective about it,” King said at an event in Carroll, Iowa, according to Iowa Horserace. “We’d probably raise a little more corn.”
King offered his own analysis of how global warming would likely lead to increased rainfall, perhaps helping crops in drought-prone regions, including Iowa.
“If [the temperature of the earth] went up, there’d be more evaporation of the 70 percent of the earth that’s covered by water," King said. "And so I know by Newton’s first law of physics, if it evaporates up, what goes up must come down, has got to come down in the form of rain. So if the earth is warm,...

John Oliver congratulated Congress on Wednesday night for having such a low approval rating that it "may just become the English language's most offensive C-word." Then again, there's still the real C-word. Also, there's "cronut" -- a real contender in Oliver's mind. See video: Dan Aykroyd Resurrects Elwood Blues on 'Late Night With Jimmy Fallon' The fill-in "Daily Show" host cited the debate over the immigration bill to show how ridiculous Congress can be. Though, Rep. Steve King (R) of Iowa did most of the legwork for him. King, speaking about Mexican immigrants, said, "For every...

On Wednesday, MSNBC’s Martin Bashir interviewed Rep. Luis Gutiérrez (D-il) about ongoing immigration reform efforts in Congress and an offensive statement made by Rep. Steve King (R-ia). This week, King said that as many illegal immigrants are drug smugglers as there are honest working men and women. Asked by Bashir if he believed his colleague was an “ignorant racist,” Gutiérrez said that King's statements were consistent with that assessment.
