Yusuf/Cat Stevens has re-recorded his landmark 1970 LP Tea For the Tillerman in honor of its 50th anniversary. It comes out on September 18th, but he’s just released a video for his new take on “Where Do the Children Play?”
The video, which uses stop-motion animations, shows two children living in a world wrecked by pollution and corporate greed. “The song has a strong environmental message, so we wanted to make a video that mirrored that,” director Chris Hopewell says in a statement. “We decided to make the props...

Sacha Jenkins' Word Is Bond celebrates the art of lyricism in hip-hop at a time when the genre's mainstream is mostly focused elsewhere: on bunker-busting beats, on beguiling melodies, on Spotify playlist selection. This film is heavy on interviews with hip-hop veterans, including rap royalty like Nas, Rakim and Big Daddy Kane; a few newer artists also make an appearance, notably Flatbush Zombies and Anderson .Paak. Between interviews, pencil-on-paper drawings appear to happen on-screen in real time, providing a pleasing visual companion to each rapper's words. Here are eight...

To catch up listeners who missed his two independent albums, Grieves opens his Rhymesayers debut with “Light Speed,” a four-minute origin story: Troubled punk kid discovers hip-hop, cleans himself up, and makes a small name for himself touring, only to return home to a bad breakup that sends him spiraling back into addiction. Tales of broken families, corrupted childhoods, and self-destructive vices are Rhymesayers’ stock in trade, so it’s easy to see why the Minneapolis label took in the nomadic Seattle rapper. But Grieves is a much mellower presence than labelmates like Slug and Brother Ali. Where those rappers ...

Move over, Barack Obama and Rahm Emanuel, there's a new face in Chicago politics. And it's probably not who you'd expect.
Rapper Che "Rhymefest" Smith, the Kanye West protégé whose collaboration on "Jesus Walks" earned the pair a Grammy in 2004, is knee-deep in a hotly contested race for the Chicago City Council. The artist received 20 percent of Tuesday's vote against incumbent Willie Cochran, forcing a runoff election for the alderman seat representing the city's 20th Ward.
A lifelong Chicago resident who grew up with West on the city's troubled South Side, 'Fest seems an unlikely political candidate, but the artist contends his musical career outside the political system makes him an ideal choice to be a councilman.

Snoop Dogg, A Tribe Called Quest and DJ Premier have been added to the 2010 Rock the Bells bill, joining a lineup that already includes such legendary acts as the Wu-Tang Clan, Rakim, Krs-One, and Slick Rick.
As part of a novel concept this year, all of the participants will perform one seminal album from their catalog in its entirety, with the exception of Premier, who will instead lead a tribute to his late Gangstarr music partner, Guru. (The Mc died in April of cancer-related causes.)
Also joining the festivities is Lauryn Hill. The former Fugees frontwoman was announced as a "special guest" last month, but Hill's involvement in the show was clarified on Tuesday (June 8). Hill is slated to perform her now-classic debut album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.

Today is Thursday, April 15, and you know what that means. In addition to celebrating Seth Rogen's birthday and commemorating Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier in baseball, you also have to have your taxes filed by today. The Internal Revenue Service — the government organization in charge of collecting taxes and enforcing tax laws — is expected to collect over 170 million tax returns this year and bring in over two trillion dollars in tax revenue. Even considering that giant chunk of change, they still figure they will collect hundreds of billions of dollars less than they are actually owed because of fraud, loopholes or simple failure to pay.
So as you fill out the last of your forms (or more likely put the finishing touches on your e-file, which a full two-thirds of the country does now), you should crank up the video playlist below. It covers all the bases, from...

Justin Timberlake stunned Brother Ali and the rapper's fans at a concert in Wyoming on Sunday, January 10 when the pop star jumped on stage to show off his beatboxing skills. Ali was performing in Jackson Hole, Wyoming at the weekend when one crowd member unexpectedly hopped onto the platform and grabbed a microphone.
The underground hip-hop star sent the stage invader back into the audience - before realising the man was Timberlake and inviting him back to join in the show. Ali then broke into an impromptu freestyle with the "SexyBack" hitmaker providing the beat.
Describing the incident on his Twitter.com blog on Monday, January 11, Ali wrote, "Last night in Jackson Hole, Wy was fun. This dude jumped on stage and started beatboxing. Me being me, I snatched the mic from him and he got off stage."
"At the end of the song, (DJ Bk-One) tells me that was Justin Timberlake.

Brother Ali’s music does not invite casual listening: It refuses to recede into the background. The Minneapolis rapper grabs listeners by the throat, a crazy-man gleam in his eyes, and angrily demands to be heard. On Us, his deeply humane new album, that mad-prophet intensity can be exhausting, exhilarating, and downright transcendent. Us begins, appropriately enough, in the church, with Mint Condition’s Stokley Williams and political-rap elder statesman Chuck D anointing Ali “a soldier in the war for love.” In another context, that phrase might come off as embarrassingly earnest, but Ali invites listeners to leave their cynicism ...

MTV News has been keeping a close watch on the backstage happenings at the 2009 Outside Lands Festival, and we've been talking to so many artists that it's sometimes difficult to find the time to actually stand in front of a stage and watch a band perform. But there was one person I definitely wanted to be in front of this weekend at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, and that person was Slug from Atmosphere. The Minneapolis rapper brought a healthy dose of hip-hop to the early afternoon proceedings and drew an impressive crowd despite the chilly conditions and the normal final day malaise that settles over most festivals.
Those of us who crowded in to see the show were not disappointed, as Slug ripped through a rugged set full of call-and-response anthems like "God Loves Ugly," "Guns and Cigarettes" and "Trying to Find a Balance." He brought out fellow...
