Following this week's pilot episode of Pretty Little Liars, we have one thing to say to The CW executive that passed on this show: Sucks to be you!
The drama premiered to 2.5 million viewers, making it the most-watched debut in ABC Family history, and earning a higher rating that average episodes of 90210 and Gossip Girl.
The series will move forward with an episode on June 15 titled "The Jenna Thing" (watch a preview for it Now), along with a special guest-starring appearance.
Sara Shepard, the author who penned the books on which Pretty Little Liars is based, will make a cameo later this summer as substitute teacher at Rosewood High School. She'll appear in episode seven.
Says star Lucy Hale of Shepard and her novels: "When I got involved in the show, I went and bought all of [the books]. I'm now on the seventh one... I can't stop reading them. They're addictive.

"Pretty Little Liars" is welcoming series author Sara Shepard in a cameo role as a substitute teacher at Rosewood High School, ABC Family exclusively tells Zap2it.
Shepard will appear in the seventh episode of Season 1-- and ABC Family tells us she'll be having a friendly encounter with one of the girls ... but which one? You'll have to tune in.
Regardless of which girl it is, we bet the girls are psyched to have Sara on set. Star Lucy Hale tells us, "When I got involved in the show, I went and bought all of [the books]. I'm now on the seventh one ... I can't stop reading them. They're addictive."
Shepard is best known for her "Pretty Little Liars" Ya series books, but she also published an adult novel, "The Visibles," in 2009, which got positive reviews from Publisher's Weekly. We can't wait to see her foray into the world of her books at Rosewood High School.

Could Pretty Little Liars be the next Gossip Girl? The new summer show — about a group of high-schoolers mourning the disappearance of their friend when they start receiving mysterious text/Im/etc. messages that seem to be from her — premieres at 8 p.m. Et tonight on ABC Family. With a pilot episode stuffed with scandal (a teacher-student affair, a girl-on-girl kiss) and a pedigree as a popular teen book series (not to mention from the same publisher/producers at Alloy Entertainment), it’s hard not compare it to our beloved Gg. But will the show live up to that promise...

Laura Leighton is back where she belongs, on TV, with a cool role on a promising new series. The actress, who earned her place in small-screen history playing Sydney Andrews on Melrose Place (Original Series) (TV) -- and who reprised that part in the recent, short-lived redux -- co-stars on the ABC Family's Pretty Little Liars (TV), which premieres tonight. Based on the young-adult novels by Sara Shepard, the story follows four teenaged girls (Lucy Hale, Ashley Benson, Shay Mitchell, and Troian Bellisario) whose friendship is put to the test when Alison, the fifth member of their clique, disappears and is later found dead, but continues to reach out to them, letting each one know -- via notes and texts signed "A" -- that she's around and knows all their secrets. Is Alison dead and reaching out from beyond the grave? Is she somehow alive and toying with her pals?...

Update: Help me find the hair accessory (pictured below) during tonight's premiere so I can complete my next mission.
I will do just about anything to keep "A" from telling my (fake) secret--it's a juicy one too!
A few weeks ago ABC Family invited me, and several other bloggers, to participate in a little game to help ease the anticipation for the upcoming premiere of its new show, Pretty Little Liars.
The show, based on the book series by Sara Shepard, premiers June 8 on ABC Family and guarantees drama and suspense, so of course I jumped at the opportunity. I had no idea what I was getting myself into!

If 'Pretty Little Liars' was on a broadcast network instead of ABC Family, it would probably not have a chance in hell of succeeding. Its target audience, the same group that eats up 'The Vampire Diaries' and 'Gossip Girl,' don't watch their TV on the couch. They watch it online, on their iPods, and just about anywhere else they can catch it that doesn't involve a cable box.
So, given who the show's audience is, and the fact that this series is based on a series of young adult novels by Sara Shepard under the same name, it's fair to say that ABC Family could have at least a modest hit on their hands. And the good thing about the show is that it's smart enough to not just be about teenage drama and kick-ass boots. It's actually got...

"Pretty Little Liars" is one of the hottest shows on TV this summer. Star Troian Bellisario, who plays smartie Spencer Hastings, dishes on the comparisons between "Liars" and "Gossip Girl" and also how addictive the book series is for her.
"I think on 'Gossip Girl' they do a really great job of showing how hard ti is to keep your friends around and be true to who you are, especially in a world like that," Troian tells Zap2it. "But for the girls in Rosewood, it's a little more smalltown Americana."
"However, we're dealing with all of the universal issues of growing up," she continues. "Figuring out who you are and what you want to be in the world and does that mesh with what your parents want you to be and how do you stay true to yourself."
So has she read the books, like her co-star Shay Mitchell?...

Zap2it caught up with Shay Mitchell, one of the stars of ABC Family's newest teen drama "Pretty Little Liars." The series is based on the "Liars" books by author Sara Shepard and Mitchell assures us that the show will stay true to the books -- but there are some surprises in store.
When asked if she is a fan of the books, Shay laughs, "I definitely am now. As soon as I got later on in the audition process, I went online and realized they have a huge fan base, so I went straight to the book store and grabbed all the books. I've read them all, they're great books."
So does the show stay true to the storylines the readers know and love?

There's definitely a reason why Pretty Little Liars is receiving as much hype as any new show slated to premiere this summer.
The ABC Family show is based on a book series by author Sara Shepard. How does she feel about this adaption? How much of a role did she play in the casting of Lucy Hale, Holly Marie Combs and others?
We participated in a conference call with Shepard this week and have published the most pertinent questions/answers below...
Did you have a say in the casting process?
That was all done on the other side of the country, so I didn’t know who they were going to cast, but when they did cast the girls I was very excited to see who they chose to be Ali, who they chose to be Aria, and Spencer and all of the rest. They don’t necessarily look like...

ABC Family is adding two hourlong series to its original slate.
The cable network has handed out 10-episode orders to "Huge" and "Pretty Little Liars," both based on Alloy Entertainment young-adult novels.
"Huge," based on a book by Sasha Paley, was written by "My So-Called Life" creator Winnie Holzman and her daughter, Savannah Dooley.
Described as "Glee" meets "Ugly Betty," the direct-to-series project revolves around six teens and the staff at Wellness Canyon, a weight-loss camp.
Holzman is exec producing with Alloy's Leslie Morgenstein and Bob Levy. Robin Schiff (ABC Family's "10 Things I Hate About You") serves as a consulting producer.
