Exclusive: The Biggest Loser and The Day I Met El Chapo producer David Broome is lining up an all-access documentary about the rise and fall of controversial subscription-based ticketing service MoviePass.
Broome will produce through his 25/7 Productions banner and has secured participation from former MoviePass Chairman Ted Farnsworth and former company CEO Mitch Lowe, who will both be among talking heads.
Pre-production is underway on the film, which we are told will also include interviews with exhibition execs from the likes of AMC, Regal and Cinemark, as well as studio execs, financiers and media. Broome also tells us that discussions are already in play with distributors for the film.
Described as a deep dive into the weeds of the changing film business, the feature will explore MoviePass’s tumultuous journey but also broader disruption in the film and content ecosystem.

Sean Penn Does Not Want You to Watch Netflix’s ‘The Day I Met El Chapo: The Kate Del Castillo Story’
Actress Kate del Castillo — who joined Sean Penn on his October 2015 trek through the Mexican jungle to interview the world’s most famous fugitive — angered the two-time Oscar winner with today’s release of her Netflix docuseries, “The Day I Met El Chapo: The Kate Del Castillo Story.” The New York Times reports that Penn’s lawyer, Theodore J. Boutrous Jr., claimed in a letter last week that the three-part, Carlos Armella-directed account jeopardizes Penn’s safety by hinting the actor aided the Department of Justice in their January 8, 2016 capture of the notorious drug dealer. The next day, Rolling Stone published Penn’s 10,000-word chronicle of he and del Castillo’s trip.
“Blood will be on [Netflix’s] hands if this film causes bodily harm,” wrote Boutrous. In a separate, October 14 letter to the lawyer of del Castillo’s co-executive producer, David Broome, Boutrous wrote, “It is profoundly disappointing that Netflix...

When the first season of House of Cards first hit Netflix a few years back, many of us didn’t really know what to think. Sure, the consensus was that the show itself was a solid piece of TV, but what about the format? Would audiences take to entire seasons being dropped on the streaming service at once? What would that do with the water cooler culture that surrounded serialized TV? Would this eliminate TV shows being a pervasive part of pop culture discussion throughout the year?
Turns out all that concern mostly seemed to be for naught. While, yes, it did change the way we consumed and talked about TV, it didn’t necessarily do so for the worse.
It’s now 2016, and as of this writing, Netflix has 30 original scripted series in “various stages of development or release,” Variety reports. Without a doubt, Netflix has...

Controversy around CBS's new reality series "The Briefcase" has been brewing for awhile (see Andy Dehnart's take here), but now a petition is circulating that charges the show with catering in "altruism porn." The premise? Financially struggling American families are presented with a briefcase containing $101,000 before being given the choice: keep it all for themselves or share the wealth with another family in similarly dire circumstances. How does this strike you? "This show is cruel and exploits the suffering of real families," reads the petition posted to Care2 and authored by a user named Ashley Neumeister. "Consider that CBS' CEO [Les Moonves] makes $54 million a year. If CBS really wants to spotlight the hardships of America's poor, it should donate outright, not exploit their suffering." As of this writing, the petition has garnered 14,199 signatures toward a goal of 15,000 and has been shared 231 times on Facebook. The term "altruism porn," in case you were wondering,...

var brightcovevideoid = '3188652154001'; When Rachel Frederickson revealed her new, size 0-2 figure on the Feb. 4 finale of NBC's The Biggest Loser, she thought she would wow friends, family and viewers - and maybe win the title of Biggest Loser. She did win, but the 24-year-old voice actress also ignited a firestorm of controversy about her dramatically slimmed-down figure, down to 105 lbs. from her starting weight of 260 lbs. (At 5'4", her height-weight ratio puts her Bmi at 18, below the threshold doctors consider normal.) Sitting down with People in Los Angeles, just days after she made headlines for her striking transformation,...

ABC Family is ready to get into the reality-show game. On Wednesday (Feb. 13), network president Michael Riley announced the pick-up of two new reality series, "Dancing Fools" and "The Vineyard." Both series will go into production this spring and will air during the summer of 2013.
"Dancing Fools," hosted by Melissa Peterman ("Baby Daddy," "Bet on Your Baby"), is a half-hour, unscripted comedy. ABC Family didn't announce any other details, but we can guess that this probably involves a dance competition of some sort.
Phil Gurin ("The Singing Bee," "Oh Sit") created and will executive-produce the show.
"The Vineyard" is described as a "dramatic coming-of-age docu-soap." The program will follow a group of 20-somethings working on Martha's Vineyard for the summer. Mischief and romance are expected when the group shares a house and the youths work and play together. It might be something like "Jersey Shore" in this way, only colder and less orange.

ABC Family has ordered two reality series: Dancing Fools, which will be hosted by Melissa Peterman, star of the network’s hit comedy series Baby Daddy, and docu-soap The Vineyard (working title). Production on both series will begin this spring. ABC Family’s most recent unscripted effort, series Beverly Hills Nannies, aired last summer. It did not go to a second season. Dancing Fools is a half-hour unscripted comedy created and executive produced by Phil Gurin (The Singing Bee, Oh Sit) and produced by the Gurin Co. ABC Family is keeping details about the premise under wraps, but judging by Gurin’s track record of turning karaoke and musical chairs into reality series, this may again be a take on a party game. In addition to Dancing Fools, Peterman also is hosting the upcoming ABC reality series Bet On Your Baby. The Vineyard is a dramatic coming-of-age docu-soap, which follows...

Diane Haitman is contributing to Deadline’s TCA coverage. NBC’s The Biggest Loser takes on childhood obesity when the show returns this month. And at today’s TCA panel, the show’s trainers told TV journalists that no child would be subjected to an on-camera weigh-in. Nor will the younger set have to compete to stay on the show. “You are never going to see our kids on our scale, “ said trainer Bob Harper. In working with children, he said, “What we do will be the exact opposite of what we do with our adults.” Panelist Joanna Dolgoff, a pediatrician and child obesity expert, confirmed after the panel that the kids will still be weighed off-camera as part of a “healthy eating” program. Adult contestants will still have public weigh-ins and have to compete to stay in the running, said Dolgoff. Trainers Harper, Jillian Michaels and Dolvett Quince, appearing on the panel with Dolgoff,...

Because there aren't already enough of them and they're all surviving the heated competition so well, the CW has green-lit a new reality singing competition.
Expected to debut this summer, "The Star Next Door" will feature Queen Latifah, Gloria Estefan and John Rich of country duo Big & Rich as its judges/mentors, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Exclusive: The CW is looking to make a splash this summer with a music competition series from Queen Latifah and The Biggest Loser creator/executive producer Dave Broome. The project, tentatively titled The Star Next Door, has pop diva Gloria Estefan and country star John Rich set as mentors. The series, which has received a 10-episode order, is expected to tap a couple more mentors in the coming weeks. Like other shows, The Star Next Door will go on a nationwide search for undiscovered artists, but in doing so it is taking the opposite approach to most other singing competition series, where auditions are held throughout the country and those that are selected are brought in to Hollywood. In The Star Next Door, the mentors, including Estefan and Rich, will travel to where the talent is and immerse themselves in the lives and towns of these local performers while preparing...

Exclusive: NBC's weight-loss reality series The Biggest Loser will be going into its upcoming 12th season without co-producing company 3 Ball Prods., which has been suspended from the show. J.D. Roth and Todd Nelson's 3 Ball was brought in by Reveille and 25/7 at the very beginning to run physical production on the series created by Reveille's Ben Silverman and Mark Koops and 25/7's Dave Broome. “We can confirm that 3 Ball Prods. are not serving as active producers on The Biggest Loser for the time being," Reveille said in a statement to Deadline. "Reveille will be assuming all production responsibilities for the long running franchise, with 25/7 Productions also continuing to serve as executive producers.“ (Since they first partnered on Loser, both Reveille and 3 Ball have been acquired, by Shine Group and Eyeworks, respectively.) Neither Reveille or 3 Ball would comment on the reasons for the split, which, at least for now, is temporary.
