After 2011’s “Nobel Thief,” 2012’s “Uncle Shyamal Turns off the Lights,” 2015’s “Peace Haven,” 2016’s “Mi Amor” and 2019’s “Aadhaar,” Indian filmmaker Suman Ghosh returns again to the Busan International Film Festival.
“The Scavenger of Dreams” has its world premiere in the ‘A Window On Asian Cinema’ strand. A treatise on social inequality, the film follows Birju and Shona, trash collectors who live in a Kolkata slum with their young daughter. They scour the city’s affluent areas by day for garbage and their experiences become the grist of stories for their daughter by night.
Like “Aadhaar,” “The Scavenger of Dreams,” then called “The Waste Collector,” was also at Busan’s Asian Project Market, where it gained significant exposure. The germ of the film was from a New York Times article about waste collectors that Ghosh read years ago that stayed with him.

Director Swarup Ghosh’s recently released Bollywood crime action drama, The Purvanchal Files, has been showered with love by film critics and trade analysts. The director is highly inspired by the Up government’s on-going actions against crime and criminals in the state. He feels the story is too relatable to the current scenario, which actually connected the audience and resulted positively on all fronts.
When asked about the response of the audience and critics, director Ghosh says, “Critics are showering their love by giving good star ratings. Most of our screens are in north India, and we have taken a good number of screens. Even the initial box-office collections are quite favourable. Almost all the screens continued in the second week as well. In fact, a few screens have even increased, and we are expecting a good response until the third week as well. I’m getting good responses from a few states.

With Jaane Jaan, director Sujoy Ghosh marks two decades of filmmaking beginning with ‘Jhankaar Beats’ in 2003. However, it was Ghosh’s ‘Kahaani’ that catapult both Sujoy and Vidya Balan’s career over night. The streak somewhat continued with his 2016 ‘Kahaani 2: Durga Rani Singh’ followed up with ‘Badla’ in 2019. With his latest streaming release ‘Jaane Jaan’, the spark seems to be missing. ‘Jaane Jaan’ is an adaptation of the 2005 Japanese novel ‘The Devotion of Suspect X’ by Keigo Higashino.
Usually when we happen to see a thriller or an investigative story, we as audience, tend to frame our minds and take sides basis what unfolds on the screen. In case of Jaane Jaan, there comes a point in the story that one remains undecided as to whose side we are on. We are sucked into the narrative and things start to reveal but of the three key characters we remain...

The last time Konkona Sen Sharma directed something, it was 2017. A year after that, the first installment of Netflix’s Lust Stories was released. Sex used to be a bigger taboo in India back then, so content like that was bound to get all the attention. Especially with four of the big names of Bollywood directing one segment each, Lust Stories was destined for popularity. However, from a cinematic point-of-view, it was not particularly great. Three out of the four directors, Kashyap, KJo, and Zoya Akhtar, treated lust as some kind of forbidden fruit and put a woman at the center of the story, which effectively villainized them.
I am sure you all have seen the “Kiara Advani TV remote” video and so many edits of that all over the internet over the past six years. While that particular segment was supposed to be a representation of female empowerment, the result was actually the opposite,...

All That Breathes. When Rintu Thomas and Sushmit Ghosh decided to mount an Oscar campaign in October 2021 for their film Writing with Fire, they were attempting a historic first. Until then, no Indian documentary feature had ever been on the radar for the Academy Awards. The general assumption has always been that India had only one category to gun for: Best International Feature Film. Every year since 1957, the Film Federation of India (Ffi), an apex body comprising Indian film producers, exhibitors, distributors, and studio owners, has appointed a committee to select the country’s official submission from the year’s releases. These selections have often proved to be arbitrary decisions, rarely standing a chance at even making the shortlist, primarily due to a vague selection process that lacks credibility. In the last six decades, only three Indian submissions—Mother India (1957), Salaam Bombay (1988), and Lagaan (2001)—actually ended up with a nomination.

Mumbai, March 21 (Ians) Mumbai Indians (Mi) beat Royal Challengers Bangalore (Rcb) by four wickets in Match 19 of the Women’s Premier League (Wpl) on Tuesday at the D.Y Patil Stadium here to take the top spot.
With the win, Mumbai hold the provisional top spot and will have to wait for the result of the match between Delhi Capitals and Up Warriorz to ensure their direct qualification to the final.
Amelia Kerr mixed guile, flight, and turn to pick up three wickets (3-22) as a disciplined bowling effort from the Mi bowlers restricted Rcb to 125/9 in 20 overs. Yastika Bhatia then provided a good platform with a 26-ball 30 before Kerr’s calculated knock of 31 not out off 27 balls helped Mi seal the chase after a slight stutter in the middle.

The central agency sleuths have summoned Tollywood actor Bonny Sengupta aka Anupriyo Sengupta in connection with the multi-crore scam. The actor has confirmed to the Ed that he will be going to the agency’s office at the central government office (Cgo) complex at Salt Lake in the northern outskirts of Kolkata during the current week.
Repeated attempts by Ians to contact Sengupta for his comments failed.
Sources said that the name of the actor surfaced following the cross-checking of the documents of Kuntal Ghosh, the arrested youth Trinamool Congress leader, who is currently in judicial custody.
Sources said that Sengupta will be questioned on whether there had been any financial transaction between him and Ghosh, and if yes for what purpose.

When the Oscar nominations for Best Documentary Feature were announced last year, a big underdog made the cut: Writing with Fire.
The film lacked both a major U.S. distributor and streaming partner. It hailed from India, a country with a vast narrative filmmaking tradition, but less of an imprint in documentaries. Directors Sushmit Ghosh and Rintu Thomas told the triumphant story of India’s only newspaper run by Dalit women in an industry dominated by men, and in the process made Oscar history.
“The fact that this was the first Indian documentary feature to be nominated became just such big news,” Thomas told Deadline last year. “A billion people sort of erupted in joy because we’re a film-loving nation.”

Kolkata, Oct 25 (Ians) Beyond the imagination of many environment activists and green technologists, the pollution level on the Kali Puja night of Monday and the morning after in Kolkata, which has been reported as the world’s second most polluted in to a recent report of Hei SoGA, came down to a record low in the last 40 years.
Experts attributed this achievement to the windy weather and continuous drizzles in the city throughout Monday night because of the Cyclone Sitrang impact and bright sunny Tuesday morning as the two reasons for this record achievement for the city. Kolkata, Oct 24 (Ians) Former North Bengal development minister Rabindra Nath Ghosh, who is currently the chairman of Trinamool Congress-run Cooch Behar municipality, has directed closure of two unlicensed outlets selling biryani allegedly using spices that were reducing male sex drive.
Ghosh clarified that although there were complaints by several locals on this count, that is not the main reason for closing down the two outlets, purportedly owned by one Pappu Khan, an original resident of Bihar. “The municipality has its own way of checking the food quality. But when I went to the shop, I asked for their trade license which they failed to produce. So, on those grounds these two outlets were closed,” he said.
It is learnt these two shops were adjacent to a Shani Dev temple in the Bhawaniganj market area in Cooch Behar town. Ghosh has claimed that he had been receiving complaints from the locals...
