Fred Silverman, the legendary television producer and executive behind such groundbreaking shows as All in the Family, Soap and Hill Street Blues, and the only executive to creatively run CBS, ABC and NBC, died Thursday at his home in Pacific Palisades. He was 82.
Silverman’s knack for identifying hit shows in the making and programming them into memorable primetime nights led Time magazine to crown him “The Man with the Golden Gut” in 1977.
“There are a lot of things that I can point to that I think are proud achievements,” Silverman said in a 2001 interview with the TV Academy Foundation. “Most importantly, I had the opportunity to kind of stretch the medium a little bit, to do some things that had never been done before.”
Watch a clip from his sit-down with Dan Pasternak for the foundation’s “The Interviews” series below.

David Nevins, president and CEO of Showtime, will receive the top award (and the good-natured roasting that often comes with it) at the annual luncheon benefiting the Center for Communications.
The organization, founded in 1980 by CBS icon Frank Stanton, has an educational mission to further opportunities for the next generation of media professionals and bridge the gap between academia and industry. In order to raise funds for its programs, it holds a yearly lunch event at the Pierre Hotel.
Recent recipients of the not-for-profit group’s award for excellence, which is named for Stanton, have included Shane Smith of Vice, former mayor and media exec Michael Bloomberg, and Ted Turner. The honoree often draws tributes and zingers from notable guests. AMC Networks CEO Josh Sapan’s retinue included Fred Armisen and the late Joan Rivers; Smith’s award came with remarks from former Viacom CEO Tom Freston and Johnny Knoxville.

In a subtle apparent reference to this year’s presidential race, FX Networks CEO John Landgraf told a New York gathering today to respect the power of story telling — but not be taken in by “reassuringly simple answers to our deepest fears” and “a seductive set of lies.” “Stories unite us” and provide the foundation for “our entire civilization,” he said at a Center for Communications lunch where he he was given its annual Frank Stanton Award. It goes to those who make…...

On October 20, 1951, CBS unveiled its Eye Device logo, better known as the CBS Eye. It was created by William Golden, theoretically based on a Pennsylvania Dutch hex sign as well as a Shaker drawing. The following season, as Golden prepared a new “ident”, CBS President Frank Stanton insisted on keeping the Eye device and using it as much as possible… and an American eye-con (sorry) was born. While the symbol’s settings have changed over the years, the Eyemark itself has not been redesigned in its entire history.
But for many of us, this is what we’ll think of when we think of CBS, and it doesn’t have that logo…

Katie Couric, Alec Baldwin, Brian Williams, Mark Feuerstein and Lorne Michaels took turns roasting outgoing CEO of NBC Universal Jeff Zucker at the Center for Communication’s annual Frank Stanton award luncheon at the Pierre Hotel in New York today. According to news reports, Couric, in a subtle reference to the recent comments by Rick Sanchez that Jews control the media, called Zucker "living proof that Jews may control the media, but that doesn’t mean they’re good at it.” She took a shot at both NBC's and her own ratings woes at third-ranked CBS Evening News. "There's no surprise he was drawn to a game where the lowest score wins," she said about Zucker, referring to his passion for golf. "He showed me that being in third place really isn't that bad." Michaels gave Zucker props for keeping Conan O’Brien on The Tonight Show in the show's...

The Center for Communication will honor outgoing NBC Universal president and CEO Jeff Zucker during its 30th annual award luncheon on Nov. 1, according to the center's Website.
The awards luncheon, set for Manhattan's Pierre Hotel, is traditionally a roast and bestows the Frank Stanton Award for excellence on a big name from the media world.
This year's luncheon chairs are NBC Universal Sports & Olympics chairman Dick Ebersol and Universal boss Ron Meyers.
Expected speakers are "Saturday Night Live" founder Lorne Michaels, Katie Couric, Mark Feuerstein, Matt Lauer and Brian Williams.
Comcast is awaiting a regulatory decision on its planned acquisition of NBC Universal by year's end or early in 2011.
Zucker recently said he has agreed to leave his post following a suggestion from cable giant Comcast, which is replacing him with Comcast COO Steve Burke. The decision for the annual Center awards honor tends...

When the first episode of the third season of Fringe finished last night, there was one thing running through my mind. "Well, I didn't see any of that coming." As much as I theorized, read, and the occasional smaller spoiler, I had not in my wildest dreams thought that Olivia would be convinced she was the "alt" Olivia.
My best guesses were:
1. She will convince Charlie to help her get back.
2. She will find Nina and use her to get back.
3. She will have to wait for Peter & Walter to realise.
At certain points over the hour I was convinced that was what was going to happen. Charlie was featuring lots, and it just felt like he may be convinced. The moment in last year's finale when he said,
"Livvy, this job isn't what it was ten years ago. You’ve got alternate universes. I mean, it just -- just wasn't part of my training,...

It hardly seems like it's time, does it? Fringe's second (and best) season is drawing to a close, beginning on May 13 with "Over There, Part 1." And folks, it looks like a good one. It looks like we'll finally get to see Olivia cross over to the other dimension, and it doesn't exactly look like a fun place. First of all, Olivia's ginger. Not that I have anything against gingers — I'm a ginger myself — but Olivia just doesn't look right with red hair. Just like Charlie Francis doesn't look right bald. But Phillip Broyles certainly looks badass in the alternate universe, I'll give him that.
But first, there's the question of getting to the alternate universe. That's going to involve getting some of the Jacksonville kids back together, including Nick Lane from last season's "Bad Dreams." Last time we saw him, he was being put into a medically-induced coma and...

New York -- Charlie Rose got roasted and lauded during a Monday luncheon here as the Center for Communication honored him with the Frank Stanton Award for Excellence in Communications.
Speakers at the Center's 26th annual awards luncheon were Barbara Walters, Newsweek editor Jon Meacham, Rose's executive producer Yvette Vega and "60 Minutes" executive producer Jeff Fager.
"I also do interviews, and I'm not exactly chopped liver," Walters started her comments at the event at midtown Manhattan's Pierre Hotel. But she envies Rose for not having to worry about ratings -- or being interrupted on every show by several women, she quipped.
Referencing a Fortune profile that concluded Rose was a lonely person, Walters recounted some of the many events on his social calendar that can make it hard to book a get-together with him. "He doesn't have time to be lonely," Walters said.
