After working with George Lucas in the first Star Wars film, A New Hope, Mark Hamill found it a little uncomfortable to work with Irvin Kershner in the next film. Kershner directed The Empire Strikes Back, which is considered one of the best Star Wars movies ever. Hamill and Kershner often butted heads over the creative direction with the character of Luke Skywalker. Nevertheless, Hamill shared that they had a mutual respect for each other for being opinionated.

Hamill had more heated arguments with another Star Wars director. His return to the sequel trilogy in a major role was under Rian Johnson’s The Last Jedi. Hamill had his apprehensions about the director’s vision, which led to clashes between the two.

It's rare to watch an actor's star rise in real-time, but that is precisely what is happening with Anya Taylor-Joy.
The actress has nary a single project in her resume that wasn't loved by critics and audiences alike, save for a big-budget script or two.
With barely an entire decade under her belt, Anya Taylor-Joy already has thirty-nine nominations, including fifteen wins, three of which are a Golden Globe, a Critic's Choice Aware, and a Screen Actor's Guild award.
Not too bad, considering she's not even thirty yet. She's made some significant moves and has quickly solidified herself as one of Hollywood's most talented young actors.
From protecting the Mushroom Kingdom to questionable fine dining, Anya Taylor-Joy has embarked on various roles. Whether it's just her voice or a full view of her stealing every scene with her piercing gaze, the actress has the skill of someone with decades of experience.

Sam Esmail made references to his previous work in 'Leave the World Behind'.The 46-year-old director has helmed the new Netflix apocalyptic thriller that stars Julia Roberts and Mahershala Ali and included nods to his previous projects – including the movie 'Comet' and the TV series 'Mr. Robot' - in the film's plot.Sam told The Hollywood Reporter: "It felt pretty natural, and to be honest with you, I didn't just do it with 'Mr. Robot'. There are little nods to everything I've worked on, from 'Homecoming' and 'Comet' to 'Robot'."I fancy myself as creating my own little universe whenever I make a film, so I thought to myself, 'Why not connect them all?' It's more fun that way."The movie tells the story of the Sandford family and their disastrous weekend getaway at the Long Island home of G.

Rian Johnson's 2018 film "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" revealed more about the "Star Wars" universe than any of the films that came before it. It was the first film, to my recollection, that finally addressed starship fuel as being a limited resource that a craft could run out of in a crucial moment. It also, in an enlightening sequence, finally addressed the economy of "Star Wars," telling the audience that endless wars between an evil Empire and the plucky Rebels would require billions of dollars in funding. And who should be funding such an endeavor but the heretofore unseen "Star Wars" wealthy class? It seems that even a galaxy of psychic space wizards and sentient androids still has unethical billionaires and war profiteers.
Johnson depicted the wealthy class as bored, ultra-stylish gamblers who inhabit a massive galaxy-famous casino called Canto Bight. There are seemingly hundreds of people in the Canto Bight sequence,...

“Star Wars” fans have received a lot of news coming out of Star Wars Celebration Europe, being held this weekend in London.
On Friday, Daisy Ridley made a surprise appearance, revealing she’d be reprising the role of Rey in an upcoming movie set in the wake of “The Last Jedi”.
Speaking with Variety, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy explained how Ridley wound up onstage in London.
“It was a pretty straightforward phone call,” Kennedy said. “I started out by just saying, ‘Hey, I think we’re getting near being ready.’ We’ve been talking a lot about what we’re doing in the movie space and I said, ‘I think we’re getting close to being ready. How would you like to go to Celebration?’ That was really the beginning of it. She was out of her mind excited.”

It’s been a good week for “Star Wars” fans who have patiently waited for the franchise return to the big screen.
While Lucasfilm has primarily focused on TV (and the upcoming “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny”) since “The Rise of Skywalker” hit theaters in 2019, Kathleen Kennedy used this year’s Star Wars Celebration in London as an opportunity to announce several new theatrical films. In addition to revealing that Daisy Ridley would return as Rey in Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s untitled film from writer Steven Knight, the Lucasfilm president also announced that James Mangold and Dave Filoni would direct new “Star Wars” features.
It was all welcome news, but Kennedy’s presentation didn’t mention some of the other “Star Wars” films that have been announced in recent years. In an interview with Variety, she offered updates on the studio’s collaborations with Rian Johnson and Taika Waititi.

Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy has been busy this week thanks to Star Wars Celebration. The fan event, held this year in London, has been chockablock with development news – including a new film with Daisy Ridley returning as Rey, a project from “Indiana Jones” filmmaker James Mangold about the very first Jedi, and a feature from “The Mandalorian” executive producer Dave Filoni that would serve as a capstone to the Star Wars television universe.
Speaking to Variety on Saturday, however, Kennedy had some information to pass along about the Star Wars content that isn’t in active planning stages – like the previously announced trilogy of films “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” director Rian Johnson was set to write and direct.
“Rian and I talk all the time,” Kennedy said. “He is unbelievably busy. So we’re not actively involved in anything at the moment because he’s doing another one of...

After the “Ahsoka” panel at the Star Wars Celebration in London, Variety spoke with Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy about some of the franchise’s future installments.
Kennedy was keen to talk about bringing back Daisy Ridley’s Rey for a new “Star Wars” film, which was announced during an April 7 panel.
“It was a pretty straightforward phone call,” she said. “I started out by just saying, ‘Hey, I think we’re getting near being ready.’ We’ve been talking a lot about what we’re doing in the movie space and I said, ‘I think we’re getting close to being ready. Kennedy also offered an update on Lucasfilm’s collaboration with Rian Johnson, who is potentially working on a new “Star Wars” trilogy.

Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers from the “Poker Face” Season 1 finale, “The Hook,” now streaming on Peacock.
Benjamin Bratt sucked it in like Rin Tin Tin or Anne Boleyn to shoot one standout scene in the Season 1 finale of “Poker Face.” The bit in question featured a poetic recitation of the entire third verse (and one line of the hook) of Blues Traveler’s 1994 earworm “Hook” by Bratt’s character, Cliff Legrand, to Natasha Lyonne’s Charlie Cale while taking her back for judgement by his boss, casino mogul Sterling Frost Sr.
Why does he do this (an act that makes Charlie call him “the fucking worst”)? Only “Poker Face” creator Rian Johnson really knows for sure — but Bratt, Lyonne and “Poker Face” showrunners Nora and Lilla Zuckerman were all on board with the idea once the “Knives Out” and “Glass Onion” filmmaker wrote it into Episode 10, aptly titled “The Hook.

Every great lead character deserves to make an entrance to a bespoke theme song. But rarely is it played on the banjo. But as audiences of Peacock’s hit mystery series “Poker Face” know, nothing else could possibly do justice to Natasha Lyonne’s Charlie Cale, a human lie detector on the run across small-town America.
“In Act 1 of each episode, we see the murder, and then at the beginning of Act 2, Charlie appears, and that’s when we hear it,” explained composer Nathan Johnson. The creative decision strayed from the convention laid out in the crime-of-the-week shows of the ’70s and ’80s that inspired the series by not dropping under the title cards. Instead, Johnson wanted to allow the audience to “land in a completely new place every time with no preconceived ideas.”

[This story contains spoilers to the penultimate episode of season one of Poker Face, “Escape From Shit Mountain.”]
By the time Poker Face viewers hit play on “Escape From Shit Mountain,” the audience for the Natasha Lyonne-starring murder mystery series knows what to expect: There will be a murder, and Charlie Cale (Lyonne) needs to solve it.
But, what happens when the target is Charlie Cale?
The ninth and penultimate episode in the first season of the hit Peacock series created by Rian Johnson plays with the show’s howcatchem format, bending its own rules the most yet. There have been surprises in previous episodes (“The Future of the Sport” saw zero deaths, while last week’s installment, “The Orpheus Syndrome,” claimed three fatalities). But none have put the show’s protagonist closer to death’s door than “Escape From Shit Mountain.”

Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers from “Poker Face” Episode 9, “Escape From Shit Mountain,” now streaming on Peacock.
A week before the “Poker Face” Season 1 finale, Thursday’s episode featured one of series creator Rian Johnson’s favorite collaborators — Joseph Gordon-Levitt. And with “Poker Face” being the show it is, if you aren’t Natasha Lyonne’s Charlie Cale, you’re either a murder victim, the murderer or an innocent bystander who gets caught in the crossfire.
Lucky for Gordon-Levitt, who says he was thrilled to learn that “Knives Out” and “Glass Onion” filmmaker Johnson had assigned him a ultimate “total dick” role. Gordon-Levitt was not just the murderer in this installment, “Escape From Shit Mountain,” but the most prolific murderer of the first season — someone who actually attempts to kill Charlie herself.

[Editor’s Note: This article contains spoilers for “Poker Face” Season 1, Episode 9.]
After more than 15 years of working together, it’s only fitting that Rian Johnson would give the most pivotal “Poker Face” cameo to longtime collaborator Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
Gordon-Levitt appears in the penultimate episode of “Poker Face” Season 1 as Trey, a white-collar criminal under house arrest who turns out to be guilty of multiple murders — and brutally stabbing protagonist Charlie Cale (Natasha Lyonne).
“That scene was just a classic well orchestrated crescendo from Rian,” Gordon-Levitt told IndieWire ahead of the Episode 9 premiere. “He had such a clear vision of exactly what he wanted, especially down to this moment… I don’t know if I’ve ever quite got to do that ultra-cinematic image of stabbing another person in the chest with a knife, and it stands to reason that it would be on a Rian Johnson set that I finally got to do it.”

[This story contains major spoilers to the penultimate episode in season one of Poker Face, “Escape From Shit Mountain.”]
After delighting audiences with his unsuspecting cameos, Joseph Gordon-Levitt finally steps back into Rian Johnson’s frame on Poker Face.
Since starring in Johnson’s directorial debut, the 2005 indie movie Brick, the actor has appeared in every movie Johnson has helmed. In addition to his starring role in 2012’s Looper, the Johnson favorite has made harder-to-spot cameos, including his secret role of Slowen-Lo in Star Wars: The Last Jedi and two voice roles in the Knives Out films — including the sound of “the Hourly Dong,” which goes off every hour in the Edward Norton-starring sequel, Glass Onion.

When Rian Johnson comes to television, he does so with a “big swing,” as music supervisor Thomas Golubić puts it. The multiple Emmy and Grammy nominee is on board for Johnson’s “Poker Face” starring Natasha Lyonne, who also executive produces the hour-long dark comedy.
A former Guild of Music Supervisors president, and three-time Gms Award winner, most notably for “Breaking Bad,” Golubic brings his more than 20 years of music supervision experience to “Poker Face.”
The first season put Golubić’s cross-section of skills to the test with hurdles like difficult clearances to on-camera musical performances and creation of original songs. Golubić met these challenges head-on with support from his team at SuperMusicVision, which includes Olivia Schlichting and clearance services by Jill Meyers Music.

When Kathleen Kennedy first took the reins of Lucasfilm in 2012, one of her first orders of business was to prepare Star Wars scholar Dave Filoni for live-action storytelling. Filoni has long been the steward of Lucasfilm animation, as Star Wars mastermind George Lucas not only hired him, but also mentored him during their run together on the animated series The Clone Wars (2008). Kennedy’s live-action plan has certainly paid off, considering that Filoni is now an executive producer on a number of Disney+ live-action Star Wars series including The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett, as well as the upcoming Ahsoka and Skeleton Crew. He’s also directed at least a half-dozen episodes across all the shows combined.
Before Kennedy paired Filoni with The Mandalorian creator Jon Favreau, she had him shadow Star Wars filmmakers on set including J.J. Abrams and Rian Johnson, the latter of whom Filoni singles out as especially helpful.

[This story contains spoilers from the first four episodes of Peacock’s Poker Face.]
After emerging from another season of Russian Doll’s mind warp, Natasha Lyonne threw herself into a new character.
This time, it was Charlie Cale, the star of her and creator Rian Johnson’s new Peacock series Poker Face. And there are some big distinctions between Nadia — her time-looping and time-traveling lead on the formerly mentioned Emmy-winning Netflix series she co-created — and Charlie, her on-the-run “human lie detector” who anchors the murder mystery-of-the-week Peacock show.
“Nadia is a bit more of a city slicker. She’s got more Lou Reed in her. And Charlie is more like The Dude from The Big Lebowski,” Lyonne, who also writes, directs and executive produces for Poker Face, tells The Hollywood Reporter when comparing her two TV roles. “Charlie sort of has the sun at her back, lives in the desert. She’s not in too much of a rush. And she...

There’s a surprising connection between Rian Johnson’s ‘Knives Out’ universe and his upcoming new series “Poker Face”, led by Natasha Lyonne.
The new Peacock series, which revolves around Lyonne’s character Charlie Cale, “a human lie-detector whose circumstances throw her into murder-mystery-solving mode each week,” as Variety describes, happens to be connected to Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig)- the main character of Johnson’s films “Knives Out” and “Glass Onion”.

In the sequel “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery”, which premiered in theatres in November, Lyonne makes a cameo as herself and is included in a five-way Zoom call with her fellow mystery-loving friends Blanc, Stephen Sondheim, Angela Lansbury and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. During the call, the real-life stars try to help Blanc get out of his current state of depression.

Rian Johnson, master of the modern “whodunit,” is taking on the “howcatchem” with the Jan. 26 launch of the Natasha Lyonne-led Peacock series “Poker Face.” While the show revolves around Lyonne’s Charlie Cale, a human lie-detector whose circumstances throw her into murder-mystery-solving mode each week, Johnson revealed how Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig), the character at the center of his films “Knives Out” and “Glass Onion,” is also connected to “Poker Face” in an ultra-meta way.
For those who have yet to see “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery,” Lyonne makes a cameo playing herself on a five-way Zoom call with Benoit Blanc, Stephen Sondheim, Angela Lansbury and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, a group of friends who all like a good puzzle. Lyonne joins her other mystery-loving buddies in trying to get Blanc, who is sitting in the tub, out of his current funk.

In true murder mystery fashion, Rian Johnson intends on taking his success from 2019's "Knives Out" and dialling the brand up to 100. The second film of Daniel Craig's gentleman sleuth saga, "Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery" opens for a week-long engagement this month before its release on Netflix in December. Taking place on a yacht and a private Greek island, the scale is much larger, the cast is even more glamorous, and Benoit Blanc's summer looks are even more fashionable than its predecessor.
Thanks to Johnson's shiny Netflix deal, a third "Knives Out" mystery film is already greenlit and on its way. Just like Hercule Poirot before him, our southern detective Benoit Blanc will have many adventures ahead of him, which Johnson and Craig are equally enthusiastic about.
But why stop at movies? In an Entertainment Weekly interview with Rian Johnson and the cast of "Glass Onion,...

Award winning composers helped turn this year’s Netflix Playlist event into an aural and visual spectacle.
The music from some of the streaming platform’s awards contenders and series were brought to life for live audiences alongside immersive, wall-to-wall projections. The event also served as a platform for Netflix to debut various teaser clips from upcoming content like Season 5 of “The Crown,” the pilot season of “Wednesday” and “Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical.”
Below are the top 10 highlights of the evening’s festivities:
Alexandre Desplat Guest Conducts “Pinocchio” Score

We all love a good social commentary, don't we, folks? Rian Johnson sure does, as evidenced by his 2019 whodunit hit, "Knives Out," and this sure doesn't look to be any different with its upcoming Netflix sequel, "Glass Onion." However, the cast of characters surrounding this new Benoit Blanc mystery might feel more familiar than the bickering socialites we were introduced to in the first film.
In the upcoming December 2022 issue of Total Film, the writer-director revealed that he drew inspiration for this new cast from ongoing cultural and societal shifts. Think the alpha male influencers, the terminally-online billionaires, and the shallow #girlboss, just to name a few. Despite this, the suspects of "Glass Onion" aren't necessarily supposed to resemble actual people -- just the ideas surrounding them.
"I've found for myself that any time I get too specific in terms of basing characters on actual people, I lose the thread very quickly,...

It’s time to sleuth around. There’s been a murder. The follow-up to the popular and critically-praised whodunnit Knives Out has just had a new trailer released just ahead of the theatrical premiere. The new preview for Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery showcases more of the ensemble cast and their extraordinarily vibrant personalities.
The official Netflix synopsis for the film reads,
“Benoit Blanc returns to peel back the layers in a new Rian Johnson whodunit. This fresh adventure finds the intrepid detective at a lavish private estate on a Greek island, but how and why he comes to be there is only the first of many puzzles. Blanc soon meets a distinctly disparate group of friends gathering at the invitation of billionaire Miles Bron for their yearly reunion. Among those on the guest list are Miles’ former business partner Andi Brand, current Connecticut governor Claire Debella, cutting-edge scientist Lionel Toussaint,...
