For his docuseries “The Dynasty: New England Patriots,” Matthew Hamachek had to do a little extra convincing to get some people to participate. One of those was Adam Vinatieri, the kicker responsible for the field goals that helped the Patriots clinch their first three Super Bowl victories. To secure his involvement, Hamachek had to do two things with the first being the inclusion of so many of his former teammates and the second had tied into what Hamachek wanted the series to be. “He wanted the unvarnished telling of it and I explained to him that we’re going to do that, and I was going to ask him tough questions, and I was going to talk to him about what it was like to be an Indianapolis Colt and be on the team that accused the Patriots of their second major cheating scandal with ‘Deflategate,’” he tells Gold Derby...

Thomas Menino, whose folksy manner and verbal gaffes belied his shrewd political tactics to govern as Boston's longest-serving mayor and one of its most beloved, died Thursday. He was 71. Spokeswoman Dot Joyce said in a statement that Menino died in the company of his family and friends. He was diagnosed with advanced cancer in February 2014, shortly after leaving office, and announced Oct. 23 he was suspending treatment and a book tour so he could spend more time with family and friends. Menino was first elected in 1993 and built a formidable political machine that ended decades of Irish domination of city politics,...

Pat Summerall was the calm alongside John Madden's storm. Over four decades, Summerall described some of the biggest games in America in his deep, resonant voice. Simple, spare, he delivered the details on 16 Super Bowls, the Masters and the U.S. Open tennis tournament with a simple, understated style that was the perfect complement for the "booms!" and "bangs!" of Madden, his football partner for the last half of the NFL player-turned-broadcaster's career. Summerall died Tuesday at age 82 of cardiac arrest, said University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center spokesman Jeff Carlton, speaking on behalf of Summerall's wife, Cheri. "Pat...

I have lived all of my nearly 40 years in one state, and so has my family: New Jersey, which means (if you don’t know how allegiances work in this part of the country) that I’m a New York sports fan.
I grew up watching the Yankees lose a few and win a lot.

It was mostly reruns this week, as most of the shows launch or return this week (though, you'll have to wait until the 20th for NBC's Thursday night line-up with "Parks and Recreation" to return). It was otherwise a lot of football on television this week, and if you're like me -- a Indianapolis Colts and an Arkansas Razorbacks fan -- it was an amazingly awesome sports week. Adam Vinatieri kicked a field goal with 53 seconds left to beat the Jets (I was celebrating so much I missed the last 53 seconds, but I'm sure with less than a minute left, the Jets sputtered on their own 30 yard line) and the Razorbacks won the Sugar Bowl after an amazing blocked punt with around a minute to go. I was so stoked about the blocked punt I actually blacked out and missed what I'm sure was a Ryan Mallet Td to take the lead.

Dubner, "Freakonomics" has sold more than 3 million copies by using economic theories to analyze issues ranging from whether Adam Vinatieri could realistically be called football's most clutch field goal kicker to more serious claims that teachers and sumo wrestlers cheat, that swimming pools are more dangerous to children than guns and that the drop in crime can be attributed to Roe v. Wade. Fact: Producer Chad Troutwine was an ex-producer on another collective: Paris, je t'aime.
