Producer Jerry Bruckheimer talks to us about director Joseph Kosinski’s untitled Formula 1 movie and the impact of last year’s strikes on its filming.
In early May 2024, reports emerged that Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski’s upcoming Formula 1 movie had a budget in excess of $300m. An already expensive production due to its real-world racing sequences and A-list stars – including Brad Pitt and Javier Bardem – its costs were reportedly pushed even higher by 2023’s Hollywood strikes.
There were even reports that footage captured during last year’s Silverstone British Grand Prix race had to be scrapped because the sponsor logos splashed across that year’s cars had changed between the 2023 and 2024 racing seasons – something a spokesperson from the Fia (the Formula 1 racing body) denied.

There's been a lot of speculation around Idris Elba being cast as the next 007 in the James Bond franchise, however, the 50-year-old actor recently admitted that he got turned off by the idea after the conversation became about race. During a June 2023 appearance on Will Arnett, Jason Bateman, and Sean Hayes's "SmartLess" podcast (via Entertainment Weekly), Elba said he was initially "super complimented" by the speculation.
"I was like, 'This is crazy!' Because James Bond… We're all actors and we understand that role. It's one of those coveted [roles]," he said. "Being asked to be James Bond was like, 'Okay, you've sort of reached the pinnacle.'"
He continued: "Essentially, it was a huge compliment that every corner of the world except for some corners, which we will not talk about, were really happy about the idea that I could be considered. Those that weren't happy about the idea...

A seven-hour flight with Idris Elba sounds like the beginnings of a rom-com (or a dream we once had), but Apple TV+’s “Hijack” goes a very different route. Shortly after takeoff, a flight from Dubai to London is taken over by a mysterious group for unexplained reasons. No ransom is demanded, no motive offered. Just a plane full of passengers sitting in terror as things go increasingly awry. But before a plane can be hijacked, it must be built. And creating a 3D set where every inch was camera ready turned out to be a tall order for production designer Andrew Purcell.
“Rarely do you have seven hours of story to tell on a plane,” Purcell told IndieWire. “So as a consequence, you can’t avoid looking at everything, and everything needs to look authentic, and everything needs to look believable. You’re keeping that suspension of disbelief for seven hours.

Lori Harvey and Damson Idris bring out the best in each other. The couple was best dressed at The Serpentine Gallery Summer Party in London on June 27, with Harvey shining bright in a plunging gold slip, and Idris matching her energy in a gray suit and matching sweater. The two posed together in photos at the party, smiling and looking at each other like they were the only ones in the room. Harvey and Idris previously made their red carpet debut at the "Snowfall" premiere back in February.
Harvey and Idris first sparked dating rumors in December 2022 after they were seen having dinner in LA. Then, in January, Idris all but confirmed the speculation with an Instagram Story of him kissing Harvey's cheek, which Harvey then reposted on her own social media with several heart emojis. Shortly after, the couple celebrated Harvey's 26th birthday and also attended Beyoncé's "Renaissance" tour stop in London.

Idris Elba is opening up about the “off-putting” backlash to the decade-long rumor that he will play James Bond.
Elba, who has even been fan-cast as 007 by fellow actors like Tom Hanks, admitted during the “SmartLess” podcast that he found it to be a “huge compliment” until discussions over his race tainted it.
“The truth is, I was super complimented for a long time about this. I was like, ‘This is crazy!’ James Bond,” Elba said. “We’re all actors and we understand that role. It’s one of those coveted [roles]. Being asked to be James Bond was like, ‘Ok, you’ve sort of reached the pinnacle’. That’s one of those things the whole world has a vote in.”
The “Hijack” star continued, “Essentially, it was a huge compliment that every corner of the world except from some corners, which we will not talk about, were really happy...

Personally speaking, there hasn’t really been any character in a film or series that Idris Elba couldn’t pull off. Be it a genie, a detective, or a villainous cyborg, Idris’s on-screen presence, in whatever form he takes, is very strong. In Hijack, we find him on a plane that is hijacked. But who is he? How will he be able to subvert the schemes of the hijackers? This is a game of patience and skillful thinking. Hijack Episode 1 is just the beginning of a very long flight.

In the new Apple TV+ series “Hijack,” Archie Panjabi plays counter-terrorist agent Zarah, who gets a tip that there has been a “serious incident” on board a plane bound for London — a tip that is, at first, written off as a false alarm.
Meanwhile, Idris Elba (who also produces) plays businessman Sam Nelson, who’s trying to outwit the hijackers on board with a series of high-stakes gambits that may or may not work out.
The first two episodes of the series from co-creators Jim Field Smith and George Kay debut June 28 on Apple TV+. Panjabi, who previously starred on Peacock’s “Departure” and TNT’s “Snowpiercer,” promises viewers will be “at the edge of your seat for the eight-episode series, which unfolds in real time.

Idris Elba has been the subject of James Bond rumours for many years, but the actor recently admitted that the racist reaction to the possibility of a Black James Bond turned him off of the whole idea.

Idris Elba’s new Apple TV+ series “Hijack” sees him star as Sam Nelson, a top corporate negotiator who finds himself in the eye of a storm when the plane he is flying on is hijacked by a gang of ruthless criminals.
Elba also exec produces the show, which launches on June 28, under his Green Door production banner. The project is a result of the actor’s first-look deal with Apple, which was announced in 2020. Sitting down with Variety in London ahead of the show’s launch, Elba said the deal has since expired but he’s already in talks to work with streamer again – including a potential return outing as Nelson.
“I love Apple and we love each other and I think we’re gonna work together again, but we’re just not currently in a set up as official,” Elba says. “It’s nice having a production deal but there’s restrictions.

Charlie Hunnam once played pilot Raleigh Becket in the Guillermo del Toro feature Pacific Rim. There he teamed up with Idris Elba, who he confided might have gotten on the actor’s bad side in the beginning.

Hunnam and Elba both teamed up for del Toro’s 2013 sci-fi feature Pacific Rim. The movie was about a team of pilots in charge of operating giant robots used to defend the Earth from monsters. Del Toro was interested in casting Hunnam for the project after meeting the Sons of Anarchy star for Hell Boy 2.
The filmmaker didn’t think Hunnam was right for that film, but down the line he thought he was a good fit for Pacific Rim. He offered Hunnam the lead in the movie after a lengthy meeting.

Exclusive: A spinoff of the hit drama series Snowfall is in early stages of development at FX, sources tell Deadline. No one would comment but we hear that, if it comes to fruition, the offshoot would potentially star Gail Bean reprising her fan-favorite Snowfall character, Wanda.
The spinoff is a continuation of the original story set in 1990s Los Angeles as South Central transitions out of the crack era into the gangster rap business, with areas heavily infested by gangs led by the Bloods and Crips. Wanda would serve as the connective tissue between the original show and the offshoot, which is expected to introduce other main characters, sources tell Deadline.
It is as yet unknown if any other characters from the original could also appear in the new show.
Malcolm Spellman will serve as executive producer and writer of the pilot. Returning executive producers include Dave Andron (co-creator of...
