“In the face of brutality and persecution, we have always been a resilient and compassionate people who understand the power of empathy,” Spielberg added to a full USC ballroom, including over 30 Holocaust survivors. “We can rage against the heinous acts committed by the terrorists of October 7th and also decry the killing of innocent women and children in Gaza.”

A couple of years ago, when it was announced that FX was doing an American Crime Story season on Monica Lewinsky, there was a wave of nonsensical concern that if the series came out during the 2020 election cycle, it might have some sort of impact.
If there’s been any similar rending of garments about HBO releasing Year One: A Political Odyssey in the middle of a midterm election cycle, I haven’t heard it. This speaks in part to the dilution of the HBO documentary brand, which used to be one of the industry’s gold standards and now simply seems to encompass whatever nonfiction programming — some still tremendous, it must be said — HBO is releasing at a rate of two or three docs or docuseries per week.

Russian leader Vladimir Putin extended official recognition to two breakaway republics in Ukraine’s far-eastern Donbas region in remarks delivered Monday night in Moscow, and followed the speech by signing an order to deploy the Russian military to the contested area.
“They want to defend their basic rights, to live on their land, to speak their native language, to preserve their traditions and their culture,” the Russian leader said. Putin blamed Ukraine for putting citizens of the region in danger, insisting that “Russia did everything it could to keep the territorial integrity of Ukraine.

It was a tale of dueling presidencies Tuesday with Donald Trump and Joe Biden each setting the tone for their administrations and one pardoned turkey.
“Together, these public servants will restore America globally, its global leadership and its moral leadership,” President-elect Biden said today as he officially introduced his primary foreign policy team with Vice President-elect Kamala Harris by his side. “It’s a team that will keep our country and our people safe and secure. And it’s a team that reflects the fact that America is back.”
“I have always believed in the nobility of public service and these Americans embody it,” Harris said in a speech of her own. “I can say with confidence, that they are, to a person, the right women and men for these critical positions.”
