It is fair to assume Criterion could plunder the world of licensed film to build an ultimate noir playlist; credit, then, for focusing sharp and nabbing deep cuts. The Criterion Channel’s November / Noirvember program will be headlined by “Fox Noir,” an eight-title program with Otto Preminger deep cut Fallen Angel, three by Henry Hathaway, Siodmak, Dassin, Kazan, and Robert Wise, and while retrospectives of Veronica Lake and John Garfield will bring some canon into the fold, I’m mostly thinking about that potential for discovery.

On May 30, 2022 the 19th edition of the Vienna Shorts Film Festival came to an end with prizes, flowers and champagne for the lucky winners at Stadtkino. Austrian director Mo Harawe celebrated a triumph, receiving not only the Austrian Short Film Award for his haunting film Will My Parents Come to See Me, but also qualifications for the Academy Award®, the European Film Award and the Austrian Film Award. The top prizes in the two international competitions went to the Qatari film And Then They Burn the Sea and the Japanese animation Bird in the Peninsula. Double honored with the new Social Responsibility Award and the Orf.at Audience Award was the essay Invisible Hands by Lia Sudermann and Simon Nagy. The awards in detail:

Spanish director Carla Simón has won the Golden Bear, the top prize at the Berlin Film Festival, for her second feature “Alcarràs,” a moving drama about a Catalan farming family facing eviction from their land. She received the prize from jury president M. Night Shyamalan, capping a strong night for female filmmakers. Full report to follow.
