This year the Grammys moved the Songwriter of the Year and Producer of the Year, Non-Classical categories into the general field. The way voting works, academy members are only allowed to vote in three fields besides general, and can only vote in 10 categories between those three fields. Songwriter of the Year was its own field when that award was introduced last year, and most members probably didn’t want to burn one of their three fields to vote for just one award. Now all voters can participate in these contests, hopefully generating a more representative list of who excelled behind the scenes. This year in particular has a diverse and exciting list of possible contenders in both categories, so let’s consider who might make the cut in the songwriting race.

Unlike other big award shows, the top Grammy categories are devoid of a reliable precursor like how the SAG Awards called all of the acting categories for this year’s Oscars. But one indicator that many pundits look out for at the Grammys themselves is a nomination or win for Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical: 11 out of the last 12 Engineered winners also took home a Grammy in their genre album category. And in the past 12 years, seven of the winners have also been nominated in Album of the Year, and five of those seven went on to win that category. This year’s Album of the Year winner, “Harry’s House” by Harry Styles, indeed took home Best Engineered Album. But checking out what else “Harry’s House” won, there might be a new category that also can give us a hint: the just-instituted Songwriter of the Year.

Photo: (From L to R) Ne-Yo, Victoria Monet, Babyface and Nija Charles On the song “Solo Reprise” off of Frank Ocean’s album ‘Blonde’, the legendary Andre 3000 says, “After twenty years in, I'm so naïve I was under the impression/ That everyone wrote their own verses.../ I've stumbled and lived every word.” Have you ever heard a song and wondered if the artist performing actually wrote the words they’re saying? Even when artists claim to write their own music, there’s always the possibility of a ghostwriter behind the scenes. Even when an artist is transparent about having writers, most people can’t put a face or a name to the writers of lyrics they know and love. It’s time we give songwriters more credit and put some respect on their names. Here are four writers and the songs they were apart of and went unrecognized for. Related...

At 23, Nija Charles has already established herself as one of the most sought-after songwriters in hip-hop and R&b, penning tracks for Beyoncé, Cardi B, Megan Thee Stallion, and Summer Walker. Even as the walls between genres are becoming more porous in the streaming era, professional songwriting can often be siloed, with writers from different genres rarely mixing in the same sessions. But in 2020, Charles leapt into Top 40 pop, co-writing both Lady Gaga’s club hit “Rain on Me” and Maroon 5’s mournful ballad “Nobody’s Love.”

Ariana Grande is back! … Okay, she never actually left, having released two chart-topping singles earlier in 2020. But on October 23 she returned with the lead single from her upcoming album, “Positions.” It’s the followup to her critically acclaimed, commercially successful album “Thank U, Next,” which she released in early 2019. Watch the music video for the title song above.
“Positions” is a pop/R&b love ballad with trap beats in which Grande pledges that she’ll be “switching the positions for you … Know my love infinite, nothing I wouldn’t do.” But while she’s singing about devotion to the one she loves, the video finds her running things in the boardroom, in the kitchen and even in the White House.

On Thursday night, Ariana Grande gave fans a first taste of Positions — the follow-up to her most-successful album yet, 2019’s already-double-platinum Thank U, Next. Lead single, title track, and slow-burning bop “Positions” dropped alongside a music video that’s both flirtatious and empowering. In it, Grande traipses around the White House as president, often flanked by her heavily female and diverse cabinet. She switches roles — or positions — between homemaker, bedroom enchantress and leader of the free world.

Producers and topliners have always had a particular dynamic: The producer usually sits behind the mixing board in the recording studio, acting as the song’s Svengali, while the topliner in the booth — the singer-songwriter who is responsible for layering lyrics and melodies over the beat — follows their lead.
But the age-old deferential relationship has flipped in Covid quarantine: Without the ability to work in recording studios, many topliners have had to become one-person operations, writing, recording and mixing their own songs in isolation and sending their vocals back to producers.
