The Saturday Night Live cold open tonight marked Donald Trump’s overwhelming victory in the South Carolina primary by skewering Republican senators humiliating devotion to him, even though he’s hurled insults at them, jeopardized their key causes and shown no loyalty back at them.
The skit had Lindsey Graham (James Austin Johnson), Tim Scott (Devon Walker), James Risch (Mikey Day) and Marco Rubio (Marcello Hernández) sharing a table at a hotel restaurant, munching on tater tots and pigs in a blanket.
“You know he once doxxed me, back in 2015,” Graham said. “They gave out my personal cell phone number in a speech to all his supporters. Had thousands of people call me up to yell at me. They threatened my life. Had to get a new phone. Switched to Verizon.”
Then, Graham said, “But you know what? I still think he’s the greatest president since Reagan.”

Former Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti’s nomination as ambassador to India cleared the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, again, after stalling out over allegations that he knew about sexual harassment complaints by a former top aide.
The committee voted 13-8 to advance his nomination, per Politico. Two Republicans, Sen. Bill Hagerty (R-Tn) and Sen. Todd Young (R-in) joined with Democrats in support of his nomination. Sen. James Risch (R-id), the committee’s ranking member who supported for Garcetti’s nomination in the last Congress, opposed it this time.
Garcetti’s nomination sailed through the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in January, 2021, with no opposition. But it then was delayed throughout the year, as Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-ia), acting on a whistleblower complaint, produced a Senate report that Garcetti “likely knew or should have known” about alleged sexual harassment by a former top aide, Rick Jacobs. The report was triggered by...

The Senate passed legislation to extend health and disability benefits to millions of veterans exposed to toxic burn pits in Iraq, Afghanistan and other areas of military engagement.
The 86-11 vote came after Republicans blocked the legislation last week, with a number of the lawmakers having previously supported it when it came before the Senate in June.
Jon Stewart, a longtime advocate for the veterans, blasted the opposition, speaking at rallies on Capitol Hill multiple times over the past week and making a series of media appearances on network Sunday shows, Fox News and Newsmax. Stewart was in the chamber for the Senate vote, and hugged veterans after it passed.
The bill, the Honoring Our Promise to Address Comprehensive Toxics Act (or the Pact Act), is designed to address the inability of veterans to access healthcare as they reported a range of illnesses. It now goes to President Joe Biden for signing.

Washington — Clocking in at nearly 1,000 pages and drawing on three-and-a-half years of work and more than a million documents, the latest report by the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence is perhaps the most complete accounting yet of Russia’s interference in the 2016 presidential election to damage Hillary Clinton and help elect Donald Trump.
The report is the fifth and final volume of the Senate intelligence committee’s attempt to understand what the Russian government did, what the Trump campaign did, the actions taken by each side’s representatives, and why.

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee voted along party lines to move forward with the nomination of filmmaker Michael Pack to lead the federal agency that oversees the Voice of America and other government-backed international broadcast outlets.
The vote was 12-10 to advance the nomination after a contentious meeting. Pack would lead the U.S. Agency for Global Media.
The committee was to vote on the nomination last week, but it was delayed. In the meantime, the office of the D.C. Attorney General, Karl Racine, said that it was investigating Pack’s non-profit. Sen. Bob Menendez (D-nj) indicated that the investigation had to do with whether Pack directed non-profit funds to his for-profit production business, as well as other issues.
President Donald Trump had singled out Pack’s nomination when he criticized Democrats for what he said was an effort to block key appointees in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Brett Kavanaugh Supreme Court battle has turned into one of the most contentious nominations in our nation’s history. President Trump’s nominee has been accused of past sexual assaults and of being dishonest before the Senate.
Despite testimony by Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, Kavanaugh’s nomination cleared the Senate Judiciary Committee on a party-line vote on September 28th. Following an unaccountably incomplete investigation by the FBI, Kavanaugh’s nomination cleared a key procedural hurdle, setting up a final vote this weekend.
