Cool air in the evenings, pumpkins on doorsteps, and Spirit of Halloween stores everywhere you look. Yes, it is the most wonderful time of the year for a certain set of us who like our weather settings left at “autumnal” and our genre of choice to be on the spooky side of things.
With that in mind, one of the most pleasurable things to do each October is curl up with a good horror movie and feel the goosebumps gather on the back of your neck. But how do you know if something is a good horror movie, exactly? You watch it for yourself, or you trust the experts, of course! For instance, the most popular streaming service in the world, Netflix, offers a cornucopia of chillers, but which are the ones that might be worth your time? Our staff has put their heads together and come up with the below list.

Be nice to waiters. That’s the first lesson of new four-part BBC One drama Boiling Point. Be nice to waiters not only because it’s nice to be nice, but because however calm and smiling they emerge from behind those flapping kitchen doors, inside blows a hurricane. Personal dramas and business pressures, dodgy colleagues, nightmare customers, shifts that end at midnight and leave you buzzing with adrenaline that needs to go somewhere… it’s the perfect cocktail for dysfunction and conflict. Handily, that in turn is the perfect cocktail for TV drama, as we know from rightly critically acclaimed US series The Bear (watch that and watch this too; there’s plenty of room for both.)
Boiling Point’s second lesson is just to let this creative team get on with it. Give them a second series with the full six episodes immediately, please, because they clearly know what they’re doing.

There are multiple canonical questions framed by Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 4 Episode 5, but the most pressing by far is how the Caitians and the Betazoids are both Federation members now when one species used to hunt and eat the other.
Seriously, how did that membership application go? As Betazoids don't appear until Tng and Caitians have served in Starfleet since Tas, how did the Caitians feel about their favorite main course protein suddenly becoming political peers?
Putting that aside, Boimler's training and T'Lyn's trauma are the other -- less morally confusing -- narrative pillars in a triumvirate of lessons in growth and acceptance.
Since her introduction on Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 2 Episode 9, T'Lyn's been a misfit of the highest order.
I've always maintained that the main takeaway from "Wej Duj" is that Boimler makes a better Klingon than Mariner makes a Vulcan (meaning T'Lyn).
And while we glimpse...

It's hard to imagine "Seven" without its intense climax. As modern crime thrillers go, they don't get much better than David Fincher's 1995 effort, which truly established the arrival of the director as a subversive talent within Hollywood. "Seven" was a hit, becoming the 12th biggest film of the year domestically despite lackluster expectations and being what Brad Pitt called in an LA Times interview, "The feel-bad movie of '95."
The movie's shocking finale had a lot to do with that success, but it wasn't just a "twist ending" that propelled it. Fincher crafted a visceral world of grime and decay which, draped in cinematographer Darius Khondji's minimal lighting, became oddly alluring. Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt as detective duo William Somerset and David Mills delivered compelling performances, with Freeman in particular arguably at the apex of his career. But there's no escaping that ending, which delivers a gut...

Following the success of last year’s inaugural event, Silver Scream Con returned to the Doubletree Boston North Shore in Danvers, Massachusetts on September 8-10 — ’cause let’s face it, baby, these days you gotta have a sequel!
Created by horror-inspired metalcore band Ice Nine Kills, Silver Scream Con has quickly established itself as a top-tier horror convention among celebrity guests and attendees alike. “Everybody’s been really nice, and I’m enjoying myself immensely,” said Tommy Lee Wallace, who created Michael Myers’ iconic mask for the original Halloween before going on to direct Halloween III: Season of the Witch. “I hope everyone gets the shit scared out of them!”
Not even severe thunderstorm alerts could stop the rabid fans, who traveled not just from all over North America but as far as Finland, Scotland, and England to attend. Ticket sales reportedly doubled from the previous year’s already-commendable showing,...

This post contains spoilers for the premiere of "Star Trek: Lower Decks" season 4.
At the beginning of the fourth season of "Star Trek: Lower Decks," the four main characters Boimler (Jack Quaid), Mariner (Tawny Newsome), Tendi (Noël Wells), and Rutherford (Eugene Cordero) are each promoted from the lowly rank of ensign to the only slightly-less-lowly rank of lieutenant junior grade. They still don't have much clout on the U.S.S. Cerritos, but at least now they no longer have to sleep in a hallway. One can see their promotions right away as, on their collars, they wear one solid pip and one empty pip. That, any Trekkie will instantly tell you, is the configuration for a lieutenant junior grade.
It should be noted that "Star Trek" has, since its inception, used extant naval ranks to designate Starfleet officers. Just like in the real United States Navy, officers start at the rank of ensign,...

After emerging in 2001 in Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant‘s acclaimed series The Office, Martin Freeman has proven himself to be one of the finest actors in the world. It’s been a minute since the last Marvel Cinematic Universe series hit Disney+, but as we cruise into summer 2023, we know that the streamer has three MCU shows lined up before the year’s out, including Loki season 2 and Echo. But first we have Secret Invasion, an event series that may change everything we know about some of our favorite MCU characters, set to kick off Phase 5.
In the big budget Marvel show, Nick Fury uncovers a conspiracy that a group of shapeshifting Skrulls are planning to infiltrate Earth in positions of power, and he has to get back to business and help save the day. Nick isn’t the only recognizable face in this story; Everett K. Ross, Maria Hill, Rhodey, and Talos will all make appearances here, but things may not quite be as they seem, as some major MCU characters are set to be unmasked as imposters.

On Monday night, Donald Trump insisted to Fox News host Brett Baier that the 2020 election had been fraudulently rigged against him. “I won in 2020 by a lot, let’s get that straight,” Trump said. “They were counting ballots, not the authenticity of the ballot. The ballots were fake ballots, this was a very rigged election,”
Trump: First of all, I won in 2020 by a lot
Baier: You lost the 2020 election

Run Forest run… towards another Emmy. That was a terrible joke but Forest Whitaker again delivered another definitely-not-terrible performance in his guest actor role in “Andor.”
“Andor,” one of the best-reviewed shows of this year, is the Disney+ spin-off TV series of the spin-off “Star Wars” movie “Rogue One.” The series follows Diego Luna in the titular role of Cassian Andor as we find out how this scoundrel eventually joins the Rebel Alliance and becomes a crucial part of the fight against the Empire. Along the way, Cassian meets some key figures in “Star Wars” lore including Stellan Skarsgård‘s Luthen Rael and Whitaker’s Saw Gerrera.
This is just the latest appearance as Saw by Whitaker (more on that later) and the performer shines once again in a role he seems born for. Saw is part of one branch of those fighting against the Empire. He fights against the...

Marques Houston is being criticised for saying that women his age often come with “baggage or kids”.
The 41-year-old singer and actor, who is married to 22-year-old Miya Dickey, was attempting to explain why he preferred to date women who were younger than him.
“A red flag to me [was] always with a woman that had a kid,” he told Page Six. “Nothing against single women, but single mothers with children are a red flag for me.
“I tip my hat and respect women that are raising children on their own,” he added. “But when I grew up, I never really wanted to have kids.
“I would talk to my dad a lot, and he would always tell me to have your own kids because you never know what the baby daddy’s are about. So if you’re gonna have kids, make sure it is with a woman that never had kids.

Morgan Freeman has explained why he views the term African-American as “an insult” and aired out his issues with Black History Month in a rare interview with The Sunday Times.
“Two things I can say publicly that I do not like,” Freeman said. “Black History Month is an insult. You’re going to relegate my history to a month? Also ‘African-American’ is an insult. I don’t subscribe to that title.”
He continued, “Black people have had different titles all the way back to the N-word and I do not know how these things get such a grip, but everyone uses ‘African-American.’ What does it really mean? Most Black people in this part of the world are mongrels. And you say Africa as if it’s a country when it’s a continent, like Europe.”
