Shakespeare didn’t invent Orson Welles but he did define him; it can be said that if any one director took arms against the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, it was the man behind Citizen Kane, Touch of Evil and Chimes at Midnight. The 1952 production of Othello is exhibit A.
Filmed over a turbulent three year period in and around Morocco, Venice and Rome, Welles was bedeviled by an ever-changing cast and crew resulting in reshoots by five different cinematographers and assembled by four different editors. The sound recording was a joke.

An acerbic teddy bear comes to life in Seth MacFarlane's hilarious first film about our refusal to abandon adolescence
To some, comedy is a funny business; to others it's no laughing matter, and critics from Aristotle to Eric Bentley have attempted to explain and define it. Pauline Kael's review of The Sting set out to explain why it was neither funny nor entertaining; the leftwing theorist and cultural historian Raymond Williams once told the readers of the Listener that Rowan & Martin's TV show Laugh-In was unfunny. They were as unpersuasive as the British Council lecturer who tried to convince an audience in Tirana that Norman Wisdom isn't funny.
Woody Allen offers two definitions of comedy in Crimes and Misdemeanors, both ways of mocking the dislikable TV star played by Alan Alda and through him the celebrated writer Larry Gelbart, on whom the character is based. The fact is...

Acting legend Al Pacino is to star as Adolf Hitler in a revival of a play about the reviled German dictator's rise to power. The Heat star, considered by many to be the greatest living Hollywood actor, will take the lead role in Arturo Ui, a satirical play by Bertolt Brecht. The show, which will have a limited three-week run at New York's Pace University towards the end of the year, was written in the late 1930s and received mixed reviews when first produced on Broadway in 1963. Critic and Brecht expert Eric Bentley says Arturo Ui is "a very poor play but very good theatre, especially with a brilliant actor as Hitler." Chazz Palminteri, Steve Buscemi and Charles Durning have also signed up for the production, which will be directed by Simon McBurney.
