David’s Quick Take for the tl;dr Media Consumer:
In posting this review, I might be giving more time and thought to the merits of Beyond The Law, Norman Mailer’s second venture in pursuit of auteurist credibility, than went into the film’s original conception and construction. As the middle installment of three films that Mailer churned out in a brief dabble as a director, we have a companion piece, maybe even an evil twin, to his first effort Wild 90. That film, released in early 1967, records the imaginary, sloppily performed interplay of three seriously drunk gangsters evading the cops as they’re holed up in a dingy Brooklyn apartment. A few months later, over two nights in October ’67, Mailer and the same pals he recruited for Wild 90 (Buzz Farber and Mickey Knox) show up again for another foray into experiential improv performance art, this time as...

The disaster movie hits the next level a week from now with the release of Into the Storm, a drama that sees a tornado rip through a small American town on the day of high school graduation. Directed by James Cameron protégé Steven Quale, the film introduces the found footage aesthetic to a story of a father (Richard Armitage) desperately trying to save his son (Max Deacon). There are multiple perspectives juggled, too, notably a pair of redneck daredevils getting close to the action in a bid to make a viral video and a professional storm-chasing outfit led by Matt Walsh's documentary maker. Think of it as Twister turned up to 11.
"The journey all these characters go through, I was hoping to do that in a more intimate way to show a disaster as opposed to the wide, epic, sweeping shots that a cinematic movie would traditionally do," Quale tells Digital Spy.

Nashville, Tenn. (AP) — When Iggy & the Stooges broke up in 1974, almost no one who'd heard of the band had actually heard it.
More than 40 years later, Iggy Pop's band has a new album "Ready to Die," a place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and growing reverence for its place in music history. It's one of rock's stranger success stories, but what do you expect when it comes to Iggy Pop and the proto-punk band everybody used to hate, but really loved?
"It's true, it's a funny arc with us," Pop said in a phone interview last week. "That is the way it is, actually, in all the various numerical yardsticks of all this crud — it's bigger than it was. We have the advantage that it was so tiny when we started. It was really really tiny in numerical scope, but it's grown and all those old...

When guitarist James Williamson left Iggy and the Stooges in the mid-70s, he never thought he’d reunite with charismatic front man Iggy Pop and drummer Scott Asheton, but following bassist/guitarist Ron Asheton’s death in 2009, Iggy called Williamson and asked him to rejoin the band. “They were fresh out of Stooges,” Williamson grimly jokes. Post-Stooges, Williamson, who called Iggy “Ig,” had become an electrical engineer and was Sony’s VP of Technology Standards. Though he initially declined the offer, he eventually said yes and has been touring with the Stooges again since the fall of 2009. Williamson produced Iggy & The Stooges’ ...

Though The Stooges put out a middling record, The Weirdness, just six years ago, the last album billed as "Iggy And The Stooges"—complete with guitarist James Williamson—was 1973’s Raw Power. All that changes this April 30 with Ready To Die, the group’s first record under that name in 40 years. Ready To Die—a title that's sure to cause a lot of misheard "Biggie/Iggy" confusion for years to come—finds Williamson reunited with Iggy Pop and drummer Scott “Rock Action” Asheton, with Minuteman Mike Watt filling in for the late Ron Asheton on bass ...

Elmore James (January 17, 1918 - May 24, 1963), inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992, is one of the most important figures in the development of the blues. By playing electric guitar not as a louder version of an acoustic guitar, but rather as a new instrument that took advantage of the amplifier to create a new sound, he revolutionized the blues and influenced several generations of rockers as well.
Fortunately, there is a single-cd compilation that offers an excellent cross-section of his legacy: The Sky Is Crying: The History of Elmore James (Rhino, 1993). Unfortunately, it's no longer in print and isn't on iTunes, but it was so popular and highly acclaimed that there are plenty of copies still floating around, as a look at Amazon.com quickly reveals -- and they're still cheap, too. The 21-song collection includes items from the Trumpet, Chess, Flair, Atlantic, Chief, Fire, Sphere Sound,...

Happy Thanksgiving. It's been a terrific month for mining new music. I caught an advance screening of Led Zeppelin's new concert movie at MoMA (and their press conference), discovered what may be my favorite album of the year, and found inspiring young musicians sharing their chops and muses with the world. With the holidays around the corner, here are some early suggestions for music very much worth sharing with friends, lovers, bosses, and family.
"You're So Great / It's All Right, Ma" Wendy James You're So Great E.P. (Cobraside)
If Brit-born/NYC-based Ms. James's claim-to-fame-band Transvision Vamp was a tad too sugar-pop coated for your New Yawk punk rawk palette, not to worry. Thanks to guitarist James Williamson (Iggy Pop Stooge) and drummer James Sclavunos (Nick Cave alumnus), she's found some downtown 'tude. The A-side is a fun retro Ramones-style punk ditty, but it's the flip-side Grinderman-grind Dylan cover where it all comes together.

And, amid the mayhem of The Stooges show, Iggy Pop took a moment to personally honour his late friend.
He told the crowd, "I need to thank Ron. He sort of peed this beautiful music all over me. When I started a band Ron was the first guy who got behind me. I owe him... I know he's trying to flick ashes on my head from heaven right now."
He then performed a new The Stooges song, "Ron's Tune", written by the guitarist's one-time Stooges replacement James Williamson.
Another punk icon, Henry Rollins, hosted the tribute and called Asheton "a peerless guitar player... and a brilliant bass player as well."

Swedish singer/DJ Basshunter has pleaded not guilty to allegations he sexually assaulted two women at a nightclub in Scotland last month. The "Now You're Gone" hitmaker - real name Jonas Altberg - appeared at Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court in Kirkcaldy, Scotland on Wednesday, January 12 and denied two charges of sexual assault, stemming from a night out after a show in Fife in December.
He is accused of attacking two women at the town's Kitty's nightclub, grabbing one woman by hair and pushing her head to his groin. Altberg will stand trial on May 18. According to The Associated Press, the date was set during the hearing before Sheriff James Williamson. He was released on bail provided he made himself "available for an identification parade".
Basshunter was accompanied to court by his manager Scott Simons.

North by Northeast 2010 is upon us! That means I have ringing ears and a sore ass ahead of me, thanks to the over 600 live music acts and an ample assortment of music themed documentaries that are taking Toronto by storm this week. This is simply a list of things I plan on checking out during Nxne, things that I think my fellow dorks will appreciate. I’ll admit that I’m not as up on new music as some, if you want the real scoop on up-and-coming bands at Nxne then be sure to read Jessica’s Nxne 2010 picks.
We’re barely scratching the surface here though, there is so much to see and do at North by Northeast. Be sure to check out the official Nxne 2010 website for ticket info and the full schedule or just go buy a wristband and get out there and see what you can!
