We have some sad news to share today, as The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that writer/director Manny Coto – who is best known for directing the 1992 horror comedy slasher Dr. Giggles (watch it Here) – has passed away at the age of 62, following a thirteen month battle with pancreatic cancer.
Manuel Hector Coto was born in Havana, Cuba on June 10, 1961, then his family emigrated to the U.S. just a few months later. Coto and his siblings were raised in Orlando, Florida, and he was still a child when a fascination with Star Trek inspired him to start shooting short films with his father’s 8mm camera. After attending college in New Orleans, he moved out to Los Angeles in 1983 and started working in commercials. He eventually crossed paths with Tippi Hedren, who worked with Alfred Hitchcock on The Birds and Marnie, and was able to get her to agree to...

After a genre-defining golden age from 1978 to 1984, slashers continued to proliferate cinemas throughout the rest of the ’80s. By the time the ’90s rolled around, however, diminishing returns for franchises and newcomers alike made it seem as though the slasher well had run dry. But, like its bottomless repository of knife-wielding villains, the genre has proven that it can never be stopped. During the dry period before Scream revitalized slashers in 1996, savvy filmmakers began leaning into the campy elements as a response to dwindling audiences rooting for the villains rather than fearing them. Dr. Giggles was just what the doctor ordered.
The 1992 film was a collaboration between Largo Entertainment, who produced the film, and Dark Horse Comics, who developed a short-lived comic book series based on the character. The 1992 horror comedy slasher Dr. Giggles (watch it Here) is getting a Blu-ray release courtesy of Scream Factory on March 21st – and copies can be pre-ordered at This Link!
Dr. Giggles was directed by Manny Coto, who rewrote the original screenplay by Graeme Whifler so extensively that Whifler was able to take the original script and get another movie out of it.. Dr. Giggles ended up with the following synopsis: It has been 35 years since the small town of Moorehigh discovered why Dr. Rendell kept losing his patients: he was ripping their hearts out in a twisted attempt to save his ailing wife. The townspeople stoned Rendell to death, but they never found the young son with the hideous giggle who helped his deranged father perform the operations. Now, over three decades later, Dr. Rendell’s son returns to gain revenge on Moorehigh’s residents, and he’s not shy about making house calls.

January’s home entertainment releases end on a quiet note as there are only a handful of genre-related Blu-ray and DVDs making their way home this Tuesday. One hundred years ago, Jack the Ripper slashed his way through London’s red light district. Now, a modern-day maniac is honoring the event by mutilating L.A. ’s ladies of the evening. Has Jack the Ripper been reborn? The police are stumped and the prostitutes of L.A. are scared. The only person with a chance of solving the murders has a problem of his...

Shout Factory unveils a neglected cult item with its recuperation of Sonny Boy, a tawdry late 1980s obscurity with some awesome Wtf grotesqueries. Although its creators, both then and now, insist on the narrative’s notable subtexts as an allegory on child abuse and toxic familial allegiance, the film is never quite elevated beyond its grindhouse elements. Notably, David Carradine stars as a redneck transvestite (whose gender identity remains undefined) as the caring part of a vicious hillbilly couple who raise a kidnapped orphan to kill and rob members of the local rural community. Its lurid set-up should definitely interest cineastes who can appreciate a bit of tastelessness in their exploitation films, but Robert Martin Carroll’s provocative directorial debut devolves into a surreal fairy tale with an undernourished finale.

Five soldiers lost in the jungle and on course for safety must fight against vicious obstacles posed by their surroundings, internal rivalries and supernatural ghosts that threaten their very lives.
Automatons (2007)
Directed by James Felix McKenney
Fresh off a limited theatrical release and shot in Robo-monstervision, a black-and-white retro style reminiscent of old television series and even older movies, Automatons is a tip of the hat to the imagination and humanity of shows such as The Outer Limits and One Step Beyond. The deceptively simple cinematography evokes a time before big-budget CGI--and thus a time when theme and content were more important than empty action and special effects.
