Book: Action Comics #5
Written By: Grant Morrison / Sholly Fisch (Backup Story)
Pencils By: Andy Kubert / Chriscross (Backup Story)
Publisher: DC Comics
Price: $3.99
Pages: 40
Release Date: Out Now In Stores & Digital Download (Via Comixology)
For the past few months, almost every time I’ve venture to my local comic book store I heard a slew of mixed opinions about writer Grant Morrison’s Action Comics, how they’re dropping the series and overall how the book has been lower than their expectations. However I walked into my Lcs yesterday to find that every-single-copy had sold and that the book was the talk of the shop, after reading I can fully see why this issue was eaten up by the public so quickly.
Upon first glance this issue may be seen as a filler tale to let regular artist Rags Morales catch up with the busy schedule, and to some extent it is.

We hold in our hands the covers for DC Comics this March. As a child of four can plainly see, these comics have been hermetically sealed in a Cgc 9.8 slab, and they’ve been kept in a #2 mayonnaise jar under a giant pile of Christmas tinsel since noon today.
What do we have worth noting? The first fill-in artist on Justice League, although Gene Ha is certainly no slouch in that department. We also have new writers on Firestorm and Green Arrow, new backups in Justice League and Action Comics, and the DC 52 hits lucky number 7.
Shall we see who is the fariest of them all? Oh indeedy, let’s do!
As usual, spoilers may lurk beyond this point.

Book: Action Comics #4
Written By: Grant Morrison / Sholly Fisch (Backup Story)
Pencils By: Rag Morales / Brad Walker (Backup Story)

Price: $3.99

God I’m trying so hard to like this book. It does so many things right but then it goes and messes on itself a couple of times and like a tired parent I get frustrated from having to tidy it up. This is one of the most action based issues of the series so far however it has some quite odd and little nonsensical moments that bring me back to square one.
The story’s pace has finally picked up and we have hit our first punch up between Superman and Braniac (or rather his possessed drones, one being John Metallo Corben) as he decends on Metropolis. It’s an enjoyable scene however the pacing became jarring at times (more on that later...

Starting with issue #4, Action Comics will begin to feature 8 page back up stories which will tie directly into the main 20 page story. The first will feature the New 52 debut of Steel and will be written by Sholly Fisch (Brave And The Bold). Here is a first glimpse at the new Steel prototype armor by Brad Walker, based off a design by Rags Morales.. From DC's The Source.. The lead story in Action #4 by Grant Morrison and Rags Morales features the debut of the “New 52” Steel! Last we saw of John Henry Irons, in Action #2, he had quit his military job in protest over Lex Luthor torturing Superman under General Lane’s command. Now, as the Terminauts lay siege to Metropolis, it’s time for John Henry to put his money where his mouth is and go help Superman defend the city. The backup in #4 ties into...

There have been many versions of Heroes for Hire, all derivations of the classic Luke Cage/Iron Fist team-up of the late ‘70s. The latest version comes from the crack writing team of Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning, well known for more cosmic space-faring sagas in Legion of Super-Heroes and most recently, the Thanos Imperative and War of the Kings. Although the series premiers this month, the entire first issue of Heroes for Hero will be reprinted in Avengers #10 at no additional cost on Feb. 23. Fans of the Avengers will get a second chance to catch the new adventures of Ghost Rider, the Punisher, Moon Knight, Iron Fist and more of the Marvel Universe’s grittier characters. Art is provided by Brad Walker (Guardians of the Galaxy, Superman’s Reign). “We want to give our fans the most Marvel value for their comic...

It has taken me weeks to write this post, so many comics to choose from, again my choices are limited to comics I’ve bought in 2010. If you think I’ve missed something please let me know in the comments section below.
1: Naoki Urasawa’s 20th Century Boys | Viz Media | W&A: Naoki Urasawa
Easily my top comic series of 2010, I was given Volume 1 and 2 at the end of 2009, and have bought almost a volume a month during 2010. With each volume being about 200 pages, 20th Century Boys is definitely value for money.
So far the story of a group of young lads has spanned over 40 years, with many twists and shocking revelations. Recently described as the Japanese equivalent to the Watchmen, it’s about a small group trying to stop a visionary/mad-man from unleashing death across the planet. It has already been turned into a movie trilogy in...

After our review of Primeval: Extinction Event we talked to its author, Dan Abnett. Dan is a British comic book writer and novelist, with decades of experience who produces an insane amount of work both solo and with frequent comic writing partner Andy Lanning. He has worked for 2000Ad, Marvel Comics, Marvel UK, DC Comics, Games Workshop, and has recently been releasing original fiction through Harper Collin’s via their Angry Robot imprint.
Hi Dan, I’m Andrew, aka Baron Fortnightly of Blogomatic3000.com, thanks for taking the time to answer my questions.
First off, what is your origin story? How did you first become a comic book writer and later a novelist?
Dan: I’ve always liked comics, because they combined two of the things I loved to do best as a kid – draw pictures and write stories. I spent a lot of my childhood making my own comics.

Another selection of favourites from the Baron, look out for my Festive Fortnightly Favourites once I find some Christmas themed comics.
Uncanny X-Force 2 | Marvel | W: Rick Remender | A: Jerome Opena
This is one of the best comics I picked up this fortnight and the story of the new X-Force verse the resurrected Apocalypse is really building into a classic X-Men story. I’ve found comics produced without an inking stage to be very hit or miss, Jerome Opena’s pencils with Dean White’s colouring are definitely a hit, the use of pinks, purples, blues and greys sets this comic apart from the other mutant comics, and Opena’s facial expressions and figure work is spot on. Even the panel borders get a thumbs up from me, with panels set in the danger room having a soft edge, which hardens as the danger room program shuts down. Also check out the shot of Cavern-x,...

Following last week’s “…For Hire” teasers, and the news that Heroes For Hire was returning to the Marvel universe, Marvel have released a sneak peek at the series, featuring The Punisher, Ghost Rider, Iron Fist, Moon Knight and Elektra.
My guess is that this iteration of Heroes For Hire will feature a rotating cast of heroes in much the same way as previous incarnations of the comic…

Marvel Comics has revealed the latest set of variant covers for their "Iron Man By Design" project, which has a multitude of artists interpreting the character through different genres and styles.
The covers will appear on a long list of Marvel Comics issues hitting shelves in April — even those that don't feature an appearance by Tony Stark's alter ego. This time around, we get a peek at a medieval Iron Man, a steampunk Iron Man, and what looks to be a Western-themed vampire-killing Iron Man, among others.
My favorite? The creepy, stitched-up Iron Man. It's the scariest version of the character since that shot of a red-eyed Tony Stark sweating alcohol in "Demon in a Bottle."
Marvel's list of issues, artists and other info is provided after the images.
