Start Beyond co-founder and COO Nathan Anderson has spun out the company’s entertainment division into independent venture New Canvas.
Based out of the Northern Rivers, Anderson will serve as CEO and executive producer of the VR entertainment studio, bringing with him Start Beyond’s existing slate. This includes Awake Episode One, Wentworth VR, Atlas Obscura VR and VR Noir, as well as projects in development.
Anderson remains a shareholder in Start Beyond (formerly Start VR), but tells If that since the company was launched in 2015, the VR landscape has changed quite dramatically, with various use cases emerging for the technology. As such, the business has evolved and matured.
Going forward, Start Beyond will have a particular emphasis on corporate, Hr and training, and education uses for VR, while New Canvas will instead be focused solely on entertainment.

Matt Cameron.
For years as a screenwriter Matt Cameron had to get accustomed to a common response from some producers when he handed in scripts.
“Thanks for the script,” he was often told. “Bye-bye, we will let you know when it’s on air.”
That has changed significantly in the past few years as writers are increasingly employed as showrunners or producers, actively involved through to completion.
“The change has been quite swift and profound,” he tells If. “There are still some old school producers who are really hanging on to the past because the old structure suited them well. They liked going to Mipcom each year and not have writers in the room for key meetings.
“The best producers we have in this country, and there’s lots, have really embraced the international approach, which is that it makes no sense not to have the writer in the room...

Jimeoin, Paul Hogan, Fiona O’Loughlin and others cracking lazy jokes – 86 of them – around a campfire. It really is his dog
A bunch of people coming around for dinner and cracking jokes over a few beers and wines ... is that a compelling idea for a feature film? The director Dean Murphy and his ubiquitous star/producer, Shane Jacobson – who is increasingly giving the impression of being a person happy not just to attend the opening of an envelope but to star in a feature film about such an event – believe the answer is a firm yes.
The twist is that the guests of the true-blue soirée held in That’s Not My Dog! are well-known Australian comedians, instructed to bring with them their three funniest jokes of all time. The guest list is impressive – including Jacobson, Paul Hogan, Jimeoin, Paul Fenech, Michala Banas, Steve Vizard, Fiona O’Loughlin, Tim Ferguson,...

As Jonah From Tonga arrives on BBC Three, we salute the meticulously observed characters of Australian comic Chris Lilley…
Feature
A sixteen year old Queen Bee, a disruptive Tongan teen, a juvenile offenders’ officer in her sixties, feckless teenage twins, a flamboyant drama teacher, a pushy Japanese mother… Chris Lilley puts on a wig, an outfit (and sometimes, a controversial bit of face paint) and becomes them all.
Watch him in costume and there’s no sense that Lilley is anyone but the character he’s playing. Other comedy drag acts - Little Britain’s Emily and Florence, for instance - might trade on the physical disconnect between the actor and persona, but Lilley is no pantomime dame. In his glossy brunette wig and school dress, the thirty-nine year old man disappears and he simply is hair-flicking, doe-eyed teen Ja’mie King. Change the wig, accent and mannerisms, and he becomes a naughty,...

For 15 days in 2006, the world watched the Beaconsfield mine disaster unfold in the media. This time, the team behind Beaconsfield: The Telemovie go 925 metres below the surface to truly reveal the claustrophobic terror. Colin Delaney goes on location, to the coalface.
Entering the site, it’s pitch black and damp. Small white spotlights illuminate the darkness but only so far. Moving closer to the source it’s clear – the lights are headlamps on the workers, also dressed in day-glo vests. It’s ‘safety first’ down here and just as a mine should feel, but Encore is on a film set.
In a large abandoned warehouse in Yarraville, Melbourne all the light has been shut out. Once the eyes adjust it’s evident it’s no longer a factory. In the centre of the shed is a long and high timber framework with scaffold and black fabric draped around it...
