Maybe the show should be called The Veteran from now on?
ABC has renewed its drama series The Rookie for a seventh season in 2024-25. The police procedural starring Nathan Fillion — which passed the 100-episode mark earlier this season — continues to draw decent-sized audiences for the network, even as it has outlived its title.
The Rookie is so named because at the show’s outset, Fillion’s John Nolan is the oldest rookie in the Los Angeles Police Department. Six seasons in, Nolan’s rookie status is long gone, but he “has used his life experience, determination and sense of humor to keep up with rookies 20 years his junior,” as ABC puts it in the season six logline. Mekia Cox, Alyssa Diaz, Richard T. Jones, Melissa O’Neil, Eric Winter, Jenna Dewan, Shawn Ashmore, Tru Valentino and Lisseth Chavez also star.

The Rookie will be back for another go-round. Ahead of the Season 6 finale, ABC has renewed the Nathan Fillion drama, produced by Lionsgate Television, for a seventh season.
The renewal comes amid strong ratings for Season 6. The Alexi Hawley-created crime drama kicked off its sixth season with its most-watched episode in nearly six years, with 11.92 million Total Viewers across platforms after 35 days of viewing. That is up 14% from its season five average and marks the show’s strongest MP35 number since Oct. 23, 2018, according to the network and Nielsen.
In adults 18-49, the series premiere notched a 2.90 rating — up 27% from its prior season MP +35 average (2.29 rating). This is the strongest MP +35 rating for the popular drama since its first season (2.91 rating) on Nov. 13, 2018. On linear, the series had its best L+35 performance in Total Viewers (7.23 million) since March 28, 2023 (7.26 million).

Avatar: The Last Airbender is heading into its second season with its third showrunner at the helm.
Showrunner Albert Kim, who replaced creators Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko, is also exiting the Netflix live-action series. Co-executive producer Christine Boylan and exec producer Jabbar Raisani — both of whom were hired by Kim — will take over as the drama’s third showrunners for the previously announced second and third seasons.
Sources say Kim’s intention was to lay the foundation for season one of Avatar: The Last Airbender after stepping in for the beloved franchise’s creators. Given the long turnaround time in crafting the series — Netflix ordered it in 2018, the creators left in late 2020 and the show didn’t debut until February 2024 — sources say Kim was ready to move on to new opportunities.

The creators of Disney+’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians series are speaking out about the late Lance Reddick.
In March 2023, Lance died at the age of 60. His cause of death was later revealed to be heart disease.
The actor had already filmed his parts as Zeus in Percy Jackson, however, the character will have to be recast in future seasons.
During a panel at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour, co-creator and executive producer Jon Steinberg and executive producer Dan Shotz spoke about their time working with Lance and how they feel about replacing him.
Keep reading to find out more…
“In terms of Lance, I don’t think anybody’s there yet. I think we have a minute, I think, there’s also such a little bit of denial maybe that that’s something that we’re going to have to deal with,” Jon said, per People.

Disney+ isn’t wasting any time getting Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2 underway.
While the renewal announcement came just a few days ago, executive producer Jon Steinberg says “there’s a couple of scripts” already in the works.
“They’re in really good shape. I think starting to boot up this machine again is an undertaking. There’s a lot of trains leaving the station all at the same time. But I think we’re feeling really good about creative and about how to plan for how to tell the stories,” he added during the Disney+ series’ panel at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour.
As with Season 1, Steinberg and executive producer Dan Shotz assured that they are leaning heavily on the book to tell the story. They will also rely on author Rick Riordan and his wife, executive producer Becky Riordan, to adapt Sea of Monsters.

The Percy Jackson and the Olympians team isn’t quite ready to look for a new Zeus.
In the Season 1 finale of the Disney+ series, the late Lance Reddick played the Greek god in an extensive scene with series lead Walker Scobell, as Percy faces Zeus atop Mount Olympus. It was one of his final on-screen roles.
Zeus has a presence throughout all five of Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians novels.
“I don’t think anybody’s there yet,” executive producer Jon Steinberg told reporters of recasting the role ahead of Season 2, which has already been given the green light. “There’s also just a little bit of denial, I think. That’s something that we’re gonna have to deal with. But we’re incredibly grateful for this character that he helped build and the presence that he created. I do not envy whoever has to step into his shoes.

“Percy Jackson and the Olympians” has been renewed for its second season at Disney+.
As announced on Disney’s latest quarterly earnings call by CEO Bob Iger, Season 1 has been streamed for over 110 million hours across both Disney+ and Hulu. Divided by the season’s runtime, that translates to roughly 20.6 million total views, suggesting that the season’s audience grew throughout its monthlong run, as Variety exclusively reported that Episode 1 hit 13.3 million views in its first six days of availability.
The series was also a hit with critics, earning a 92% on Rotten Tomatoes with Variety‘s Aramide Tinubu praising it as “a gorgeous, intriguing narrative about self-discovery, courage and friendship.”
Adapted from Rick Riordan’s book series of the same name, “Percy Jackson’s” success was crucial for Disney, whose execs gave the series a Star Wars-sized budget and were betting on its potential to kick off a major franchise.

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for the Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 1 finale.] Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 1 came to an epic conclusion with the Episode 8 finale, “The Prophecy Comes True.” In it, Percy (Walker Scobell) made it to Olympus, the lightning thief’s true identity was revealed, and despite what the prophecy foretold, he did save what mattered most in the end. The big question on our minds is, after the success of the series — the premiere was watched more than the Loki Season 2 premiere and Secret Invasion series premiere on Disney+ and viewership has only increased since then, according to the Nielsen streaming charts — what does the future hold for this fantasy series? TV Insider spoke with executive producers Jon Steinberg and Dan Shotz about their vision for Season 1 and how it sets up the series as a whole. Since it was green-lit, the plan for Percy Jackson was to have five seasons, one for ...

Spoiler Alert: This article contains spoilers for the season finale of “Percy Jackson and the Olympians,” now streaming on Disney+.
The first season of the long-awaited “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” series on Disney+ has come to a close, and it ended the same way Rick Riordan’s first book did: Percy (Walker Scobell), Annabeth (Leah Sava Jeffries) and Grover (Aryan Simhadri) part ways before the school year, knowing that they’ll reunite in the not-so-distant future with a bit more world-saving to do. But the journey to get there was often unpredictable, even for fans of the novel.
Most notably, Percy fails his quest. He and his friends miss the summer solstice deadline to find and return Zeus’ (the late Lance Reddick) stolen master lightning bolt, kicking off a war between Zeus and Poseidon (Toby Stephens) — and marking the series’ biggest departure from the book. Still, the kids plunge...

Black Sails premiered 10 years ago today on Starz. The pirate drama built a strong fan base over the course of its four seasons, one that’s still singing its praises today. In December, it was said that Black Sails would stream on Netflix starting January 1, 2024. As of the time of publication, it’s still not available on the streamer, causing confusion among fans. But star Toby Stephens is excited by the prospect nonetheless. Black Sails is a prequel set 20 years before the events of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novel Treasure Island. It stars Stephens as Captain Flint, known throughout the West Indies for being the most brilliant, most feared of all the Golden Age pirates. It also stars Jessica Parker Kennedy as the sharp and seductive Max. The actors continue the nautical theme as Poseidon and Medusa in Disney+’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians, created by Black Sails...

The new owners of Cheddar News, once touted as a kind of next-generation financial news network ala CNBC, have furloughed staff members because of “unforeseen” circumstances, the New York Times reported.
Cheddar, founded in early 2016, was acquired by cable operator Altice USA in 2019 for $200 million. Last Thursday (Dec. 28), Altice USA said it sold Cheddar to Archetype, a media company owned by private-equity firm Regent, for undisclosed terms.
On Jan. 2, Cheddar employees received an email informing them that they were to suspend work immediately, per the Times. “We would like to have given you more notice of this action, but the decision was necessitated by unforeseen internal and external factors that required rapid adjustments in our business strategy,” the message said.
Reps for Archetype and Regent did not respond to requests for comment. A spokesperson for Altice USA referred inquiries to Cheddar’s new owners. Emails sent Tuesday to multiple Cheddar...

Altice USA has found a buyer for Cheddar News, which aims to woo millennial audiences with finance news.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but the U.S. cable provider said the youth-skewing business news service in competition with CNBC and Bloomberg TV — except aimed at a younger viewership — has been acquired by Archetype, a media company whose brands include Sunset and Military Times.
In 2019, Altice USA bought Cheddar for $200 million in cash after being an early investor in the digital-first company that launched in 2016, along with other seed investors like Amazon, Lorne Michaels’ Broadway Video and Comcast Ventures. Do second-chance adaptations have a better shot at doing justice to the source material? The film versions of Rick Riordan's "Percy Jackson & the Olympians" book series received mixed reactions, and for good reason — their narratives failed to capture the nuances of Riordan's beloved novels and deviated heavily from the established canon. However, the small-screen adaptation of the book series, also titled "Percy Jackson & the Olympians," recently debuted its first two episodes on Disney+ to positive reviews. As Riordan himself is actively involved with the project, this adaptation is more faithful to its source material than its movie counterparts and reflects the ethos of Riordan's fantasy world in authentic ways.

Watching Walker Scobell, Leah Sava Jeffries, and Aryan Simhadri on set of Percy Jackson and the Olympians really was like watching Rick Riordan‘s characters come to life for executive producers and showrunners Jon Steinberg and Dan Shotz. Percy Jackson premiered on Tuesday, December 19 with two episodes on Disney+ and Hulu, and fans of the books are already in love with the actors who play Percy, Annabeth, and Grover, lovingly called “the trio” by fans and creators alike. The overwhelmingly positive fan and critic reaction to the trio since the series premiere is a sign that the creators of this series did their job right. Steinberg and Shotz tell TV Insider that casting the right actors wasn’t enough. They had to then make sure that the set was an environment where they could have fun and grow as young stars. This article contains spoilers for episodes 1 & 2 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians.
Sally Jackson has always been an important character in the Percy Jackson books. As the mother of a demigod, she’s had to give up a lot in order to keep Percy safe. And yet it’s very clear that she wouldn’t have it any other way. She loves Percy with her whole heart, and has raised him to be compassionate, caring, and brave.
But while the books do a great job of showing us just how important Sally is to Percy’s journey, the Disney+ series Percy Jackson and the Olympians takes their bond as mother and son even further. Even though Percy may get some cool powers and divine connections from his dad Poseidon (played by Toby Stephens in the series), the show makes it abundantly clear that Percy is who he is because of Sally.

They say never to meet your childhood heroes. Even the fictional ones don’t always hold up — problematic creators, disappointing endings, stories that don’t stand the test of time — and the inevitable adaptations of those juggernaut stories risk falling flat and failing to capture the magic of the original.
But fans of Rick Riordan’s “Percy Jackson” novels — both new and old, as there is sure to be an uptick — can rejoice in the knowledge that “Percy Jackson and the Olympians,” now streaming on Disney+, is more than worthy of its source material and the massive mythology behind it. Riordan himself co-created and executive produces the series along with Jon Steinberg, the pair of them extensively involved in production and writing. For adults who discovered Percy back in 2005 or new generations joining the quest with time to spare (a seventh novel is slated for 2024 publication), this hero is one worth meeting.

Disney appears to be putting quite a few eggs in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians basket.
The highly anticipated small screen adaptation debuts on Disney+ with two episodes on Wednesday. The first episode will also be available on Hulu through January, which is when the eight-episode first season will wrap up — yet another sign that Disney is hoping to get as many eyes on the series as possible.
Season 1 follows the events from the first of five books by Rick Riordan with the intention that the series will comprise five seasons, one for each of the novels. There’s no official word yet on whether Season 2 will see the light of day, and executives will certainly be keeping a close eye on how the series performs through the holidays. However, executive producer Jon Steinberg confirmed to Deadline there’s already been “discussions” about moving forward.

Following the less-than-stellar films from the 2010s, Rick Riordon’s beloved Percy Jackson book franchise will see new life on Disney+. The live-action Percy Jackson and the Olympians series will debut the first two of its eight-episode freshman season this Wednesday, Dec. 20.
The forthcoming installment, which follows the events of The Lightning Thief — the first book of the series — will feature several key changes, including the handling of the titular hero’s wretched stepfather Gabe, played in 2010’s Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief by Joe Pantoliano. The Might Ducks: Game Changers alum Timm Sharp will portray him in the Disney+ series.

A storm is brewing, and this one could usher in the end of times.
Disney+ has released a new trailer for Percy Jackson and the Olympians, and there's a good chance it will be the streaming service's best series this year.
With the Marvel Cinematic Universe imploding on both the big screen and on streaming, and the tepid response to The Mandalorian Season 3, Disney+ is betting on Percy Jackson and the Olympians.
In the past, Disney+ hasn't put its marketing muscle behind projects outside the MCU and Star Wars universe.
If the series manages to break through, it will probably urge the streaming service to take more significant risks.
Adapting Rick Riordan's bestselling book series for the small screen already looks to be paying off.
While the two big-screen adaptations were criticized, everything we see for Percy Jackson and the Olympians looks like a natural next step for the franchise.

As much as coming-of-age stories like "Harry Potter" tended to suck up all the oxygen in the room during our younger years, Millennials of a certain age can't help but look back fondly on the "Percy Jackson" series. Author Rick Riordan's novels took a fantastical spin on Greek mythology and cleverly blended it with all the typical teenage angst found in YA books everywhere. This approach proved so popular, in fact, that 20th Century Studios ushered in two big-budget film adaptations in the early 2010s, following the adventures of the young demigod Percy Jackson with grand ambitions of all six of Riordan's original books. That didn't exactly pan out as expected and plans for the franchise all but fizzled out with "Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters" in 2013 ... not least of all because Riordan essentially disowned the films.
The upcoming Disney+ series, however, has been working overtime to right those...

It’s no secret that Rick Riordan, who wrote the Percy Jackson book series and executive-produces the upcoming Disney+ live-action series, took major issue with the 2010 film Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief and its sequel Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters.
In his notes to movie producers in 2009, he called the Lightning Thief script “terrible” as a whole and maligned the age-inappropriate swearing as a “lazy attempt to make the script seem hip to teens.” Responding to a fan in 2020 who said he hated the films more than they did, Riordan shared that it was “my life’s...

The next big thing in Hollywood was created by a middle school teacher from Texas. To his fans, he’s Uncle Rick.
In the crowd of a Los Angeles theater, where Uncle Rick has stopped on his most recent book tour, two teenage sisters gush that they drove for nearly two hours to make it here tonight — longer, when you account for parking — but it was worth it. Like Percy Jackson, the character that made Uncle Rick famous, the older sister has Adhd, while the younger sister never liked reading. And Percy also landed in Los Angeles on his very first quest. So by the logic set out in Uncle Rick’s books, these girls were born to be heroes.
“Here’s what I think is gonna happen,” the 15-year-old whispers. “He’s gonna pull me out of the audience and say, ‘I want you in my show.’” Her sister...

Now might be the perfect time to re-read Rick Riordan’s “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” books before the adaptation arrives on Disney+ at the end of the year. For this show, only the main foundation series (and maybe just the first book) are required reading before Camp Halfblood comes to life on the small screen.
The first two episodes of “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” arrive December 20 on the streamer, followed one new episode per week. Christmas will be to “Percy Jackson” fans as Thanksgiving will be to “Hunger Games” fans, with “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” film adaptation arriving in theaters November 17. We’re here for the YA literary revival!
But back to Greek gods, demigods and monsters — here’s everything we know about the upcoming “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” Disney+ series:

After nearly 15 years, “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” author Rick Riordan is out with a new book centered on the original core trio of Percy, Annabeth and Grover, “Percy Jackson and the Olympians: Chalice of the Gods.” But, will this new set of adventures make it into the upcoming Disney+ series? Well, for Riordan, it’s too soon to say — but he’s not opposed to it.
“That is just too far down the horizon to know the answer to. I don’t know,” he told TheWrap at his Chicago book tour stop on Sunday. “I mean, right now we’re just focusing on season one. And if it does well, who knows? You know, the kids are totally excited. Based on the best-selling book series by author Rick Riordan, “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” follows a 12-year-old modern demigod, Percy Jackson, who learns that he has godly powers because his father is Poseidon, Greek god of the sea. The first two episodes of the eight-episode first season premieres Dec. 20 on Disney+.
“My name is Percy Jackson,” Scobell’s voiceover introduces his character at the beginning of the clip. “Am I a troubled kid? Yeah, you could say that.”
As a cover of Vance Joy’s “Riptide” sets the scene (iconic because Riptide is the name of Percy’s sword), Scobell goes on to describe what troubles his character. For Percy, letters swim around on the page, but he later learns that he has dyslexia because the...

In 2010, 20th Century Fox brought to life the first film in the Percy Jackson series, Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief starring Logan Lerman. Fox would bring over the director of the early Harry Potter films, Chris Columbus, to helm the start of this new franchise. The Lightning Thief would go on to become a hit as it grossed $226.4 million worldwide with a production budget of $95 million. The sequel, Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, also became a modest hit and a third film, The Titan’s Curse, was set to be the next installment, but it never manifested.
