Unrepped writer Richard Galazka’s romantic comedy Matinee Idol and Malachi Smyth’s Gateway 6 topped the annual Brit List of best unproduced screenplays. Both projects received nine votes. The list is compiled by UK producers, agents, distributors and sales companies, who aren’t allowed to vote for their own projects. Other qualifying criteria include receiving a minimum of three votes and not having featured on previous Brit Lists.
Previous films to appear on the Brit List include The King’s Speech, Welcome To The Punch, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and most recently The Riot Club.
Matinee Idol is being produced by Rooks Nest Entertainment. Sentinel Entertainment is behind Gateway 6, a futuristic sci-fi project. 42, one of the UK’s most dynamic production and management companies, had two projects on the shortlist: Jay Basu’s The Pier and Outside The Wire, from screenwriting duo Rowan Athale and Rob Yescombe

Among the most talked about film items on crowd-sourcer Kickstarter this year, Belle and Sebastian frontman Stuart Murdoch’s feature directorial is the type of grassroots English speaking foreign import indie flick the fest likes to make room for. God Help the Girl has been long in the works (Murdoch started writing the songs for the project in 2003) and he was lucky enough to land Emily Browning (Sleeping Beauty) for the lead with Hannah Murray and Olly Alexander (The Dish & the Spoon star we interviewed dropped a couple of musical notes on us) as supporting cast for the Glasgow shot pic which began production in the month of July.
Gist: Set in Glasgow, Scotland, this is Eve (Browning) who is in the hospital dealing with some emotional problems and starts writing songs as a way of getting better. Songwriting becomes her way forward, leading her to the City where she...

Thoroughly disappointing and forgettable though the film may have been, I still found myself wholly impressed by Elle Fanning‘s work in Super 8. (And it was the first time I had seen her perform, too; not a bad introduction, when you think about it.) Excepting an unlikely scenario in which Twixt actually sees some kind of release, Variety has news on what may very well be the next film I check her out in.
As they report, Fanning and Olly Alexander (Enter the Void) are being sought to headline God Help the Girl, a musical that’s being helmed by Belle and Sebastian leader Stuart Murdoch. The genesis behind this project’s a little unusual; a few years back, Murdoch formed a second group (also named God Help the Girl), that went on to record a concept album of the same name (he must be fond of it) in...
